Background / History

Hongjun was drawn from a wisp of pure energy from chaos by Great God Pangu before Pangu’s death. Pangu entrusted him with guarding the unfinished Primordial World, regulating heaven and earth’s laws, and guiding living beings toward order until the Three Pure Ones and Lin Shen appeared. 47

During the Dragon-Phoenix Calamity, Hongjun sensed Lin Shen’s emergence as a variable outside his calculations. He advised Luohu not to interfere with the force that could end the calamity, recognizing it as part of the Heavenly Dao’s greater trend. 19

After Lin Shen absorbed the Calamity Fiend Qi and the Three Pure Ones attained Primordial Golden Immortal status, Hongjun moved against Luohu. He defeated Luohu, dismantled the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, dispersed most of Luohu’s demonic cultivation, and spared his life so that he might seek a new path through reincarnation. 21 24

Hongjun initially visited Kunlun Mountain to determine whether Lin Shen would aid or obstruct his plans. Unable to deduce Lin Shen’s essence or origin, he came to regard him as Pangu’s true contingency and an embodiment of the Great Dao. 25 31 35

Appearance

Hongjun usually appears as an ancient Daoist in a plain gray robe. His unassuming form blends so completely with his surroundings that he can be overlooked despite standing in plain sight. 31

Personality

Hongjun is calm, restrained, and deeply committed to order in the Primordial World. Even when confronting Luohu’s killing formation, he remains composed, rejects the Demonic Path’s philosophy of slaughter, and purifies the resentment sustaining the formation rather than merely overpowering it. 23

His mercy has clear limits. He spared Luohu from annihilation, but deliberately crippled Luohu’s demonic cultivation to prevent further calamity and give him a chance at reincarnation. 24

Around Lin Shen, Hongjun is markedly more affectionate and playful. He eagerly accepts being called “Grandpa,” competes with the Three Pure Ones for Lin Shen’s favor, patiently indulges the child’s whims, and openly prioritizes Lin Shen’s comfort when arranging his sermons. 47 51 87 107

He is also shrewd when an opportunity arises. After Lin Shen inadvertently produces a Jade Plate of Creation fragment, Hongjun trades a candy-producing cloud for it and immediately integrates the fragment into his own Jade Plate. 88

Hongjun intervenes after the Dragon-Phoenix Calamity shifts in favor of the Orthodox Dao. He confronts Luohu on Demon Mountain, enters the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, purifies its resentment, and ultimately shatters it. 21 23 24

Kunlun Mountain Alliance

Curious about Lin Shen’s impossible origin, Hongjun visits Kunlun Mountain and offers Primordial Violet Qi. Though the Three Pure Ones initially suspect him of attempting to bind Lin Shen to the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun’s revelation of Pangu’s entrustment turns the two sides into allies. 31 32 47 48

Attainment of Sainthood

After receiving Origin Qi from Lin Shen, Hongjun realizes a path to retain agency while merging with the Heavenly Dao. He becomes the Primordial World’s first Sage and opens Zixiao Palace to preach the Great Dao. 34 46
