Background / History

Hongjun was drawn from a wisp of pure energy from chaos by Great God Pangu before Pangu’s death. Pangu entrusted him with guarding the unfinished Primordial World, regulating heaven and earth’s laws, and guiding living beings toward order until the Three Pure Ones and Lin Shen appeared. 47

During the Dragon-Phoenix Calamity, Hongjun sensed Lin Shen’s emergence as a variable outside his calculations. He advised Luohu not to interfere with the force that could end the calamity, recognizing it as part of the Heavenly Dao’s greater trend. 19

After Lin Shen absorbed the Calamity Fiend Qi and the Three Pure Ones attained Primordial Golden Immortal status, Hongjun moved against Luohu. He defeated Luohu, dismantled the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, dispersed most of Luohu’s demonic cultivation, and spared his life so that he might seek a new path through reincarnation. 21 24

Hongjun initially visited Kunlun Mountain to determine whether Lin Shen would aid or obstruct his plans. Unable to deduce Lin Shen’s essence or origin, he came to regard him as Pangu’s true contingency and an embodiment of the Great Dao. 25 31 35

Appearance

Hongjun usually appears as an ancient Daoist in a plain gray robe. His unassuming form blends so completely with his surroundings that he can be overlooked despite standing in plain sight. 31

  • Ancient, unadorned face. 22 31
  • Deep, starry eyes; after becoming a Sage, his presence carries the vastness of the universe. 22 46
  • White hair and beard when visiting Lin Shen at Kunlun Mountain. 87
  • Often carries himself with the effortless stillness of someone merged with heaven and earth. 31 106

Personality

Hongjun is calm, restrained, and deeply committed to order in the Primordial World. Even when confronting Luohu’s killing formation, he remains composed, rejects the Demonic Path’s philosophy of slaughter, and purifies the resentment sustaining the formation rather than merely overpowering it. 23

His mercy has clear limits. He spared Luohu from annihilation, but deliberately crippled Luohu’s demonic cultivation to prevent further calamity and give him a chance at reincarnation. 24

Around Lin Shen, Hongjun is markedly more affectionate and playful. He eagerly accepts being called “Grandpa,” competes with the Three Pure Ones for Lin Shen’s favor, patiently indulges the child’s whims, and openly prioritizes Lin Shen’s comfort when arranging his sermons. 47 51 87 107

He is also shrewd when an opportunity arises. After Lin Shen inadvertently produces a Jade Plate of Creation fragment, Hongjun trades a candy-producing cloud for it and immediately integrates the fragment into his own Jade Plate. 88

Abilities & Skills

Heavenly Dao Authority

Hongjun’s power is rooted in his connection to the Heavenly Dao. Following his Sainthood, his words and actions naturally resonate with the laws of the Primordial World. 46 47

  • Can invoke and manifest Heavenly Dao laws in combat. 22 23
  • Uses law chains from the Jade Plate of Creation to form shields and suppress hostile forces. 23 24
  • His word “Still” freezes time, space, energy, laws, and the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation itself. 24
  • Can revive a dead Iron Birch Tree with a single command: “Life.” 52
  • Possesses sufficient insight to identify Yang Mei, Yin Yang, and Qiankun as Chaos Demon Gods in disguise. 106

Three Corpses Method

Hongjun has separated and reunited the Good, Evil, and Self Corpses.

  • Reunites the three corpses with his true body to return his Dao Fruit to its origin. 24
  • This integration pushes him infinitely close to the Sage realm before his formal Sainthood. 24
  • He later teaches Slaying Three Corpses as one of three methods for advancing beyond Grand Unity. 111

Purification and Salvation

Hongjun counters destructive and resentful power through purification rather than destruction.

  • Purifies the resentful spirits bound into Luohu’s Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, weakening its foundation. 23
  • Releases spirits that accept liberation and sends those unwilling to repent toward reincarnation. 23
  • Uses the Jade Staff of Creation’s green light to suppress killing intent and dismantle Luohu’s formation. 23 24

Dao Preaching

As Dao Ancestor, Hongjun guides the cultivation development of the Primordial World through public sermons.

  • Opens Zixiao Palace for a Great Dao lecture after attaining Sainthood. 46
  • Announces the Quasi-Saint path and its three routes: Slaying Three Corpses, Sainthood through merit, and Proving Dao by Force. 111
  • Reveals that Primordial Violet Qi offers power at the cost of freedom through Heavenly Dao shackles. 112
  • Holds his second sermon at Kunlun Mountain, favoring Lin Shen’s comfort over Zixiao Palace convention. 107 110

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Jade Plate of Creation — A chaotic supreme treasure recording the Three Thousand Great Daos. Hongjun uses it to defend against and suppress the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation; he later incorporates an additional fragment containing the Dao of End and Destruction. 23 24 88
  • Jade Staff of Creation — Hongjun’s companion spiritual treasure, a verdant bamboo staff with 3,650 nodes containing the laws of worlds. He uses it against Luohu before gifting it to Lin Shen. 22 47
  • Treasure Distribution Rock — A stone platform formed from an incomplete Jade Plate of Creation, bearing the laws of the Three Thousand Great Daos; gifted to Lin Shen alongside the Jade Staff. 47

  • Primordial Violet Qi — Bestowed to Lin Shen as a first-meeting gift and later distributed to six Sage candidates. 31 111

Relationships

  • Great God Pangu — Entruster and revered predecessor. Pangu created Hongjun from a wisp of chaos energy and tasked him with guarding the Primordial World. 47
  • Lin Shen — Treated as Hongjun’s grandson. Hongjun credits Lin Shen’s Origin Qi with helping him attain Sainthood while preserving more of his self after merging with the Dao. 47 87
  • The Three Pure Ones — Initially wary of Hongjun’s motives, they reconcile after learning of Pangu’s entrustment and come to regard him as an elder ally and fellow guardian. 31 47 48
  • Nuwa — Fellow Daoist and member of the Kunlun Mountain child-rearing group; joins Hongjun and the Three Pure Ones in discussing Lin Shen’s growth. 48 51
  • Luohu — Longstanding Dao-Demon rival. Hongjun defeats him, destroys the Immortal Slaying Sword Formation, and spares him after crippling his cultivation. 19 22 24
  • Yang Mei, Yin Yang, and Qiankun — Ancient Chaos Demon Gods whose hidden identities and motives Hongjun recognizes immediately. 106
  • Six Sage candidates — Hongjun grants Primordial Violet Qi to Yin Yang, Qiankun, Minghe, Kunpeng, Jieyin, and Zhunti, then explains the freedom and shackles attached to their choices. 111 112 115
