Background / History

Sebas has served as a Grim Reaper for decades. Grim Reapers are selected talented souls who share the duties of the one true Grim Reaper, Thanatos; Sebas initially identifies himself as an apprentice rather than an official reaper. He explains that the position exists because a single reaper can no longer manage the growing number of human deaths. 13 14

Outside the Imperial Capital, Sebas captures the Nightmare possessing Marquis Os after Shaya injures it. Grateful that Shaya made the capture easier, he explains the Underworld's hierarchy, the reapers' responsibilities, and the treatment of demons that intrude upon human affairs. 13

Sebas and Shaya establish a cautious friendship after discussing the Book of the Dead. Sebas becomes alarmed when the divine artifact cannot locate any record of Shaya, leading him to suspect that Shaya is an existence comparable to a true god. 14 15

After returning the captured Nightmare to the Underworld, Sebas interrogates it for information and resolves not to involve himself in the apparent connection between Shaya and the awakening Great Grim Reaper. 15

Sebas is later promoted and receives a bonus for capturing the Nightmare. He visits Shaya's moving castle with wine brewed by the God of Wine, then continues his regular work harvesting souls in the Imperial Capital. 23

When Hart Valentine's fate is altered from an imminent death to death by myocardial infarction at age seventy-two, Sebas recognizes that the Book of the Dead has been changed. He accompanies his superior Baru to report the anomaly to the Underworld. 39

Sebas is a young-looking man with black hair and black eyes. His features are described as Mediterranean rather than East Asian, with a high, long nose that curves slightly downward. 13

Personality

Sebas is polite, reserved, and pragmatic. He treats Alicia respectfully despite initially believing her to be an ordinary resident of Shaya's home, and he approaches Shaya with extreme caution once he realizes the Book of the Dead cannot identify him. 14 22

He views being a Grim Reaper as a job rather than a sacred calling, openly admitting that he wants to keep his position and prefers mutually beneficial alliances over unnecessary conflict. 14

Despite his work, Sebas is compassionate toward the bereaved. At the hospital, he comforts a mourning woman before offering his funeral home's services. He also mourns Hart as a good man in a world he believes does not welcome good people. 28 37

Sebas can be dryly humorous and commercially minded. He dismisses the deceased Director Rick's attempt to bargain with money for his life, then remarks that the money would be better off going to him. 27
