Background / History
Astartes are humanity's gene-modified warriors, commonly regarded as the Emperor's Angels. Despite their augmentation and separation from ordinary society, they remain human at their foundation. Their strength is derived from Gene-seed, which carries a Primarch's genetic bloodline and integrates with a recipient's nerves and muscles during implantation surgery. 95 629
The transformation from recruit to battle-ready Astartes is lengthy and hazardous. Even under favorable conditions, producing a warrior fit for frontline service takes five to ten years, with failure possible at multiple stages of augmentation. 473
Astartes were active during the Great Crusade, when Moon Wolves enforced control aboard an armed cargo ship and violently suppressed a Beastman uprising. 56 In later eras, Chapters such as the Black Templars continued operating from fleet-based crusading forces, using conquered worlds primarily as recruitment sites for new blood. 165
Under Primarch Rorschach, multiple Chapters were reorganized into the Twenty-Second Legion, later known as the Scourge Legion. Its constituent Great Companies retained their internal customs and command structures while receiving Legion-wide resources and recruitment support. 697 698 992
Appearance
Astartes are towering, heavily built warriors whose bodies are adapted for integration with powered armor. Their visual identity is usually defined by their Chapter's armor colors, heraldry, and specialized wargear. 473 698
- Gene-seed surgery alters the recipient's body, nerves, and musculature. 95
- Power Armor connects to plasteel interfaces and the Black Carapace through electronic muscle bundles and neural systems. 115
- Mag-boots, sealed helmets, power packs, and heavy shoulder guards are common elements of their battlefield equipment. 115 417
- Terminator-armored Astartes are substantially bulkier and equipped for close-quarters assault. 122
Organization and Recruitment
Astartes are generally organized into Chapters, companies, squads, and specialist formations. Rorschach's Legion structure recast individual Chapters as Independent Great Companies while allowing them to preserve their traditions. 697
- Great Whites — recruit human berserkers as Gene-seed candidates and field unusually large recruits with an active berserker ability. 754 803
- Raven Guard — favor superheroes or mortals with exceptional determination; their Gene-seed was also used in the Giant Raven Guard program. 754 864
- Space Wolves — require recruits to undergo their creation process on Fenris because of the Chapter's unique Wolf's Coil. 754
- Black Templars — seek intensely devout believers in Ecclesiarchy-controlled territories, though limited Gene-seed reserves restrict their expansion. 754
- Sanguinary Chapter — was divided into two companies and retrained in Terminator armor and formation warfare under Rorschach. 475
Abilities & Skills
Gene-seed Augmentation
Gene-seed is the biological foundation of an Astartes. It carries a Primarch's bloodline and grows into the recipient's internal systems after implantation. 95
- Enables the physical transformation required to become an Astartes. 95
- Can carry genetic defects or mutations that threaten combat effectiveness and genetic stability. 323
- Requires Apothecaries, specialized surgical knowledge, and uncontaminated genetic material for reliable recruitment. 473 698
Power Armor Integration
Astartes armor is directly linked to the wearer through the Black Carapace, plasteel interfaces, neural connections, and electronic muscle bundles. 115
- Allows the wearer to drive heavy armor as an extension of their body. 115
- Supports heavy weapons, melee weapons, communications, environmental protection, and battlefield mobility. 115 417
- Can be repaired, modified, and adapted for different roles by Tech-Priests and Techmarines. 400 473
Squad Warfare
Astartes are trained to fight in disciplined combat formations, combining ranged firepower, close-combat weapons, and coordinated movement. 805
- Great White recruits use Frost Grenades, Plasma weapons, Storm Bolters, Chainswords, and Vibranium Shields in coordinated engagements. 805
- Veteran Astartes can withstand enemy attacks that would devastate ordinary forces, though energy-based attacks remain dangerous to their armor. 582
- Knowledge Crowns can rapidly impart battlefield directives and combat knowledge to recruits and prospective auxiliaries. 96 768
Close-Quarters Assault
Astartes frequently fight at close range with chain and power weapons, using their armor's mass and enhanced physiology to overwhelm enemies. 120 670
- Great Whites employ chain weapons in rapid encirclement attacks against Chaos Astartes. 670
- Power weapons can penetrate armor and inflict decisive damage on heavily armored opponents. 395 404
- Terminator Armor is optimized for close combat and turns melee weapons into especially effective tools of assault. 122
