Background / History
Before his death, Minato served as Konohagakure’s Fourth Hokage and was Jiraiya’s disciple. His political outlook differed from Hiruzen Sarutobi’s: he recognized the Uchiha Clan, accepted Obito Uchiha as his student, and had even considered Obito as a possible future Hokage 32. He was married to Kushina Uzumaki and was Naruto Uzumaki’s father.
Minato died during the Nine-Tails’ rampage after using the Reaper Death Seal; his soul, along with the Nine-Tails, was sealed within the Shinigami 309 313. Twelve years later, Uchiha Kaze broke the Reaper Death Seal and had Orochimaru use Impure World Reincarnation at the ruins of the Land of Whirlpools to restore him 309 310.
Initially confused and wary of the forbidden ritual, Minato questioned why Kaze had resurrected him. He accepted cooperation after learning of Akatsuki’s Tailed Beast collection plan and the possibility that Kaze’s research could eventually reunite him with Kushina and Naruto 310 311 313. To conceal his identity, he became the masked Elite Jonin “Zero,” nominally associated with Root 313.
Appearance
During his Impure World Reincarnation state, Minato retained a young, handsome appearance but bore black cracks across his skin and darkened sclera. Sage Mode added orange pigmentation around his eyes 456. He concealed these identifying features while operating as Zero.
- Wore a mask, new clothing, and gloves to hide his reanimated condition 313.
- The mask was destroyed during his battle with Sasori, exposing his cracked face 456.
- Could rapidly regenerate damaged limbs and facial wounds while reanimated 456.
Personality
Minato is calm, observant, and analytical under pressure. He evaluates terrain, enemy resources, and the relative strengths of allies before acting; this approach allowed him to divide Team 7’s pursuit of Deidara and Sasori into the most practical assignments 455.
As a teacher, he is protective without being overindulgent. He initially wanted Team 7 to begin with D-rank missions despite their ability, then used real combat to teach vigilance, coordination, and independent judgment 347 353. He praises effective performance while directly correcting mistakes, such as Naruto’s failure to notice the Demon Brothers’ suspicious puddles 353.
Although ordinarily approachable, Minato is capable of ruthless battlefield action when a mission demands it. During negotiations with the Wind Daimyo, he eliminated armed resistance in seconds, marked the Daimyo with a Flying Thunder God formula, and gave him three days to surrender 579 580. His loyalty to Kaze deepened after Kaze restored both Minato and Kushina to life 581.
Abilities & Skills
Flying Thunder God Technique
Minato’s signature Space-Time Ninjutsu allows him to teleport instantly to marked locations. His speed is repeatedly mistaken for, or compared to, the legendary Yellow Flash’s 323 449.
- Places formulas on special kunai, opponents, allies, and surfaces he touches 358 360 457.
- His marks remain usable even after the marked kunai are damaged or after long periods of time 360 457.
- Uses the Second Step to teleport behind opponents and strike with Rasengan 325 449.
- Marked Zabuza and Haku to prevent their escape and intervene before Sasuke could strike Haku 358 361.
- Teleported Jiraiya and Kakashi to Madara’s battlefield when Tengai Shinsei threatened the area 542.
Rasengan
Minato created and uses the Rasengan with precise chakra control, adjusting its force to incapacitate rather than kill when sparring with his students 325.
- Broke through Sasuke’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode and defeated him with a Second Step–Rasengan combination 325.
- Overwhelmed Zabuza and Kisame through close-range Rasengan strikes 358 449.
- Used a Sage Art: Great Ball Rasengan to crush Sasori’s puppet body and create a massive crater 457.
- Targeted Sasori’s regeneration core with a final Rasengan after marking the Third Kazekage puppet 457.
Sage Mode
Minato trained at Mount Myōboku and possesses a more complete mastery of Sage Mode than Jiraiya 476. He can enter the form while reanimated.
- Enhanced his physical attacks and Rasengan against Sasori 455 457.
- Used Sage Mode to efficiently destroy Madara’s poisonous Flower Tree World Descent Technique while his reanimated body remained immune to its gas 545.
- His reanimated body’s lower durability remained a limitation; Sasori’s puppet severed his arm even after Minato entered Sage Mode 455.
Sensory and Tactical Ability
Minato is an accomplished sensory ninja and combat strategist.
- Detected Itachi’s chakra and recognized the abnormal presence of duplicate chakra signatures created by Rinnegan cloning 448.
- Identified the positions of the Wind Daimyo’s guards before entering the room, allowing him to neutralize them immediately 579.
- Exploited Sasori’s focus on Minato’s kunai by marking unconscious Sand ninja and the Third Kazekage puppet as alternate teleportation anchors 457.
- Analyzed the military, financial, and environmental weaknesses of Sunagakure while assessing Konoha’s campaign of unification 471.
Reanimated Physiology
While under Impure World Reincarnation, Minato could regenerate from severe wounds and was unaffected by poison, making him especially suited to confront Sasori 442 456.
- His body restored lost tissue and limbs with reanimation debris 456.
- He could not initially exert the full strength he possessed while alive 323.
- Kaze later replaced this state with true resurrection through the Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique 564 579.

- Kushina Uzumaki — wife. Their chance to reunite was central to Minato’s decision to cooperate with Kaze; both were later truly revived 313 564 581.
- Naruto Uzumaki — son and member of Minato’s Team 7. Minato is relieved by Naruto’s growth and guides him as his Jonin instructor 310 314 331.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Team 7 student. Minato recognizes Sasuke’s unusual speed and power, but disciplines him during their sparring and missions 323 325 353.
- Karin — Team 7 student. Minato recognizes her Uzumaki heritage, medical talent, and Eight-Tails status when accepting responsibility for the team 315.
- Kakashi Hatake — former student. Minato is relieved that Kakashi has left Anbu’s darkness and serves as Kaze’s assistant 314.
- Jiraiya — mentor. Minato retains deep respect for Jiraiya and shares a connection to Mount Myōboku’s Sage Mode training 309 474 476.
- Obito Uchiha — former student. Minato recognizes and confronts Obito after confirming his identity during the conflict with Madara 543 544.
- Orochimaru — collaborator in Minato’s initial resurrection. Orochimaru admires Minato’s strength and character, while Minato respects Orochimaru’s ability 309.
