Background / History

The Heavenly Dao is ordinarily formless, yet it takes notice of Lu Changqing early in the story. It protects him at the Heavenly Court and shields Kunpeng when Primordial Heavenly Venerate attempts to bar the latter from Kunlun Mountain 3.

When Lu Changqing publicly calls upon it, the Heavenly Dao responds through the Eye of Heavenly Punishment. Rather than punish him, it manifests part of the Heavenly Dao Divine Wheel and forms a golden bridge to negotiate with him; it later opens the Heavenly Dao Void for him, a place the Saints regard as inaccessible to others 13 15 16.

Inside the Heavenly Dao Void, it accepts one hundred trillion Merit from Lu Changqing for distribution and presents him with the Heavenly Dao Divine Staff. It subsequently witnesses cultivators' creation of new worlds and grants Merit to Zhen Yuanzi, Ming He, Di Jun, Houtu, and others 17.

The Heavenly Dao's relationship with Lu Changqing is not wholly submissive. It imprisons him with chains of order after one of the Primordial World's transformations, manifests the Eye of Heavenly Punishment in anger when he evades a vast Merit bestowal, and opposes Houtu's establishment of the Earthly Dao 23 52 79 80.

As the Primordial World advances, the Heavenly Dao grows powerful enough to confront the Great Dao. With the Human Dao and Earthly Dao, it shatters the Great Dao's restraints and launches a counterattack into Chaos; when the conflict becomes untenable, it humbly seeks Lu Changqing's intervention 142 143. Lu Changqing later compels an initial fusion between the Heavenly Dao and Great Dao, turning their former opposition into a connection between the two realms 145.

Appearance

The Heavenly Dao has no fixed physical body. Its presence is conveyed through manifestations of heavenly order and overwhelming pressure.

Personality

The Heavenly Dao is protective of the Primordial World's order and reacts sharply to threats against its authority. It responds with punishment when Houtu establishes the Earthly Dao and relentlessly pursues Tongtian and Yuanshi with heavenly lightning for actions that anger it 79 162.

Its conduct toward Lu Changqing is exceptionally tolerant and often reluctant. It allows him into the Heavenly Dao Void, accepts responsibility for distributing his Merit, and obeys his command to cease punishing Tongtian and Yuanshi despite its evident anger 16 17 162.

Though initially hostile toward the Earthly Dao and opposed to the Great Dao, it proves adaptive. It cooperates with the Earthly Dao and Human Dao against the Great Dao, later accepting an initial fusion with its former enemy 80 143 145.
