Background / History

Dao Ancestor of Xuanmen

Hongjun was the Dao Ancestor of Xuanmen and had long merged with the Heavenly Dao. He ordinarily remained secluded in Purple Heaven Palace, appearing in the Primordial World only when major tribulations or disorder threatened its established order. During an earlier Witch–Demon conflict, he imposed a million-year ceasefire and decreed that the Demon Clan govern the heavens while the Witch Clan governed the earth; the Ancestral Witches believed this ruling favored the demons. 13

When Lu Changqing emerged as an unpredictable variable, Hongjun attempted to uncover his origins with a fragment of the Jade Plate of Creation. The Great Dao retaliated against the deduction, injuring Hongjun’s soul and convincing him that Lu Changqing could not be treated as an ordinary Quasi-Saint. 10

Conflict with Lu Changqing

Hongjun nevertheless openly dismissed Lu Changqing’s strength and fortune, only to be struck by Heavenly Punishment for his disrespect. The incident established a recurring humiliation: the Heavenly Dao repeatedly favored Lu Changqing over its own spokesperson. 13 25

His resentment deepened when the Heavenly Dao permitted Lu Changqing to enter the Heavenly Dao Void—a privilege Hongjun had never received despite his long integration with the Dao. He became jealous of Lu Changqing’s growing influence, particularly as Wuji Heaven’s rising fortune drained the luck of Purple Heaven Palace. 16 21

Although initially too proud to participate in Lu Changqing’s Merit-based projects, Hongjun eventually sent Hao Tian and Yao Chi to exchange treasures for Merit. He later joined world-opening work and other projects after realizing that Merit could hasten cultivation. 35 36 55 73

Schemes, Defeat, and Deposition

Hongjun opposed Lu Changqing’s efforts to strengthen the Primordial World because a more complete world would reduce tribulations and thwart his plans to weaken the Heavenly Dao. He selected Buzhou Mountain as a potential point of collapse, then secretly manipulated the River of Destiny to intensify the conflict between the Witch and Demon Clans. 62 64 77

Lu Changqing exposed Hongjun as the hidden instigator behind the renewed Witch–Demon conflict. Hongjun was killed in a single exchange by Lu Changqing’s four Chaos Supreme Treasures, revived through the Heavenly Dao, and then subjected to further defeat. 121

Lu Changqing subsequently declared himself Ruler of the Primordial World and stripped Hongjun of his position as Heavenly Dao envoy. Bereft of Heavenly Dao authority, Hongjun’s cultivation fell, his original path was severed, and his Three Thousand Reincarnations Annihilation technique was erased by Lu Changqing’s Origin Tribulation. He surrendered, offered compensation to the Witch and Demon Clans, and accepted a Saint Demise Pill. 122 123

Reconciliation and New Path

After a period of seclusion, Hongjun publicly admitted that his past obsessions had nearly caused disaster. He apologized to Lu Changqing, Di Jiang, and Di Jun, presenting innate spiritual treasures to the Witch and Demon Clans as compensation. They accepted his apology but warned that any renewed scheming would not be forgiven. 133 134

Having lost the path of controlling the Heavenly Dao through integration, Hongjun chose to cultivate alongside it instead: the Heavenly Dao’s growth would now support his own advancement rather than serve as something to weaken and dominate. 133

Appearance

Hongjun is depicted in a Purple Heaven Daoist robe and carries the dignified bearing expected of the Dao Ancestor. His composed appearance often collapses under the humiliation of Heavenly Punishment or defeat by Lu Changqing. 13 25

He repeatedly seeks Merit after witnessing its effects, yet struggles to abandon the schemes and ambitions tied to his former path of controlling the Heavenly Dao. His manipulation of the Witch–Demon conflict demonstrates both his long-term planning and his willingness to endanger the wider world for personal advancement. 62 77 121

Following his defeat and deposition, Hongjun becomes more restrained. He acknowledges Lu Changqing’s contributions, apologizes for his past actions, and adopts a path of coexistence with the Heavenly Dao—though Pangu remains wary that his old ambitions may return. 108 133 164
