Background

Ryougi Shiki is the daughter and future head of Kan'mu City's influential Ryougi Family, a clan with holdings in both legitimate and illicit circles. The family was formerly among Japan's demon-exterminating lineages and remains connected to the supernatural world. Shiki herself is connected to the Root. 1 6 160

She was born with extensive “common sense” imposed upon her, causing her to view humanity's baser nature with detachment and making ordinary closeness difficult. She shares her body with another personality, Ryougi Oryou, while a further “Shiki” personality is associated with her urge to kill. Although she feels a strong desire to experience killing, she consciously refuses to murder. 3 6 13

During the Kan'mu serial-murder case, Shiki repeatedly found corpses and feared that one of her other personalities was responsible. Higashino Kanade's investigation established that she was being framed and targeted instead. 3 4

Personality

Shiki is outwardly cold, blunt, and difficult to approach, yet fundamentally warm-hearted and compassionate. She dislikes shallow social interaction, usually keeps to herself at school, and reacts harshly to cruelty—particularly Shirou Shiratsuyu's murders and his attempt to define her as his partner. 5 6

Her desire to kill is a persistent internal conflict rather than an intent to harm innocents. She rejects Kanade's suggestion of killing death-row prisoners, and she initially refuses to kill Shirou until she understands why he targeted her. 7 76
