Geography and Economy

• Desert terrain — Sunagakure's shinobi fight most effectively in the Land of Wind's sand; rocky terrain in the Land of Rivers weakens their sand-based tactics 483.
• Minerals — The resource-poor Land of Wind was a major mineral exporter. Rasa's gold prospecting helped fund Sunagakure and sustain his position as Kazekage 186 238 426.
• Financial strain — Sunagakure could not meet the Uchiha Clan's three-billion-ryō ransom demand for Gaara. Later wars left it short of money, supplies, and manpower 186 616 771.

Leadership

• Chiyo and Ebizo — Senior figures in the faction opposing Rasa. Ebizo demanded his resignation and later signed Konoha's territorial cession treaty 156 238 616 620.

History

Gaara's capture and the mineral dispute

Rasa sent Gaara to investigate Konoha while Pakura provided cover. Gaara later accompanied a Sunagakure force through the Land of Rivers in Shukaku's form, with Pakura's team keeping him transformed for the operation 89 145. After Gaara was captured, Chiyo traveled to the Uchiha Clan Compound, but Sunagakure could not pay the demanded ransom. Gaara remained in Konoha 170 183 186.

Rasa's failure to recover Gaara and Shukaku strengthened opposition to his rule. He retained office partly by bringing gold-mining profits to the village 238. A gold-rich vein then drew Sunagakure and Iwagakure into an undeclared conflict. Akatsuki intervention forced their commanders to negotiate 238 257.

War with Konoha and territorial cession

Sunagakure and Iwagakure later coordinated against Konoha. Chiyo exchanged communication information with Ōnoki, while Sunagakure assembled a force of about four thousand under Pakura 451 452. Senyo's Susanoo inflicted heavy losses; a later account puts Sunagakure's deaths in that war at six or seven thousand, with Chiyo also killed 484 626.

After the war, Konoha invited Sunagakure to discuss compensation. Rasa refused to send a representative 588 594 607. Minato responded with attacks that entered Sunagakure itself. With the village divided over surrender, Ebizo demanded that Rasa step down, and Pakura accepted the Kazekage position 616 617. Ebizo signed a treaty ceding territory to Konoha; he subsequently took responsibility for the defeat and died, leaving arrangements for Pakura 620 626.

Over the following five years, Konoha turned part of the ceded desert into an oasis around Sea Buckthorn City. Its living conditions attracted Land of Wind residents and even some Sunagakure scouts 643 771.

Final campaign and surrender

After Rasa defected and attacked Konoha, Pakura faced the prospect of Konoha's retaliation with depleted finances, manpower, and territory 771 785. Konoha and Iwagakure advanced into the Land of Wind, creating oases as they went. Sunagakure used desert conditions, sandstorms, and guarded cities to slow them while seeking help from Kumogakure 823 828 867.

Konoha captured Suna City, and Sunagakure concentrated its defense at Arasuna City, the last major city before the village 898 900 932. Retto and Shamon were brought back to defend Sunagakure, but Minato sealed them after their battle with Senyo and Konoha's forces 940 956 959.

Senyo then ordered Sunagakure's surrender and the temporary confinement of its people before they could receive Land of Fire citizenship. The takeover met less resistance than expected after more than half a year of fighting and Konoha's creation of new oases 964. Sunagakure surrendered completely, and the Land of Wind was incorporated into the Land of Fire 965.

Military and Defenses

• Sand manipulation — Sunagakure shinobi use desert sand for barriers and other battlefield techniques. Shamon's Sand Mat can also carry passengers through the air 779 943.
• Wind and Scorch Release — Its forces employ coordinated Wind Release attacks; Pakura is a prominent Scorch Release user 145 657 779.
• Poison warfare — Updated Sunagakure poisons caused Konoha casualties during the later campaign, requiring new antidotes 880.
• Security units — The village maintains a Sensory Unit, Anbu, and a Sealing Team 610 617 785.
• Fortifications — During Konoha's final campaign, Sunagakure deployed guards at populous cities, used a formation to strengthen sandstorms, and fortified Arasuna City after evacuating many residents 867 900.

Relationships

• Konoha — Captured Gaara, defeated Sunagakure in successive campaigns, received ceded territory, and ultimately took over the village 186 620 964.
• Iwagakure — Fought Sunagakure over a gold-rich vein, later coordinated an attack on Konoha, and eventually joined Konoha's advance into the Land of Wind 238 451 823.
• Kumogakure — Sunagakure sought its aid during Konoha's final invasion, but Kumogakure hesitated to intervene 823 828.
• Akatsuki Organization — Mediated Sunagakure's mineral dispute with Iwagakure after capturing Iwagakure's jinchūriki, Han 257.
