Background

Yang Jian was born at Guanjiang Mouth to Yaoji, an immortal maiden of the Heavenly Court, and Yang Tianyou, a mortal scholar. He grew up alongside his elder brother Yang Jiao and younger sister Yang Chan until the Heavenly Court seized Yaoji. Left alone and powerless, he resolved to cultivate, rescue his mother, and oppose the force that had destroyed his family 590 604.

Jade Cauldron True Person originally descended under Primordial Heavenly Lord's orders to accept Yang Jian as a disciple. Niu Ben intervened, claimed Yang Jian as his own disciple, and took him to the Ox Clan's Innate Blessed Land. Jade Cauldron gave Yang Jian a Ginseng Fruit as a meeting gift, recognizing his need to gain power quickly enough to save Yaoji 604 605.

Niu Ben built Yang Jian's foundation before teaching advanced methods. Yang Jian ran with immense weights, tempered his body, studied Dao scriptures, meditated, and cultivated a method integrating physical refinement, Primordial Spirit cultivation, and the potential of his Heavenly Eye. His fixation on saving his mother remained, but Niu Ben taught him to make that obsession a controlled source of resolve rather than a demonic hindrance 606 607.

Appearance

Yang Jian is a young, striking cultivator marked by a vertical Heavenly Eye between his brows. He is frequently depicted in martial attire, carrying a polearm or axe.

  • Silver armor and a flowing cloak during his departure from the Ox Clan 644.
  • A vertical golden mark between his brows that opens into his Heavenly Eye 607 693.
  • White robes and a Three-Pointed Double-Edged weapon during his challenge at the South Heavenly Gate 701.
  • Black mystic-water armor as Judicial Deity, carrying the War God's Axe 740.

Personality

Yang Jian is defined by filial devotion, endurance, and an intense refusal to accept helplessness. His pursuit of power begins with the goal of rescuing Yaoji, but develops into a broader conviction that strength and authority are necessary to protect family and resist injustice 604 644 737.

He is disciplined rather than reckless. Although he openly challenges the Heavenly Court, he recognizes when he lacks the strength to confront it directly and chooses cultivation, preparation, and alliances over a futile charge 607 644. He is also respectful toward elders and martial relatives, addressing Bixiao, Zhao Gongming, Jade Cauldron, and the Three Xiaos according to their seniority even after surpassing many opponents in battle 672 679 681.

Yang Jian can be ruthless toward hostile enemies, especially agents of the Heavenly Court, demon forces, and the Western Teachings. Conversely, he protects civilians, rewards loyalty, and treats followers such as Yuan Hong with trust and responsibility 648 656 670.

Abilities & Skills

Nine Revolutions Mysterious Technique

Yang Jian's principal body-tempering method grants him extraordinary physical strength, endurance, and combat power beyond cultivators of the same realm.

  • His physical body can contend directly with powerful flood dragons and Heavenly Court generals 647 654.
  • The technique gives him immense vitality, stamina, and rapid mana recovery 647 694.
  • He uses it as the basis for his weapon combat and Heaven and Earth Manifestation 648 654.
  • Niu Ben's teaching emphasizes a balanced foundation of body, Primordial Spirit, mana, and Dao Heart rather than a single lineage 607.

Heavenly Eye

Yang Jian possesses an innate Heavenly Eye located at the center of his brow.

  • It began opening during his Ox Clan training, allowing him to perceive spiritual-energy currents, life auras, and the pathways of another cultivator's mana 607.
  • It can identify weaknesses in formations; Yang Jian used it to deduce and destroy the weak node of a Great Formation of the Stars of the Heavens 675 676.
  • Its destructive divine light can annihilate formidable enemies, including a Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal Nine-Headed Serpent Demon 693.
  • Early in his cultivation, uncontrolled activation threatened to harm him; Niu Ben warned that the Heavenly Eye could overwhelm its wielder if rushed 607.
  • Powerful uses consume substantial mana, though his recovery speed offsets much of that cost 694.

Heaven and Earth Manifestation

Yang Jian can enlarge himself into a colossal battle form.

  • He transformed into a ten-thousand-zhang giant while fighting the Three-Headed Flood Dragon after losing his weapon 648.
  • The transformation dramatically amplifies his physical might and allows him to overpower opponents using lesser versions of the same divine ability 654.
  • His manifested form is supported by the Nine Revolutions Mysterious Technique and his immense qi and blood 648 654.

Axe Techniques and War God's Axe

After meeting the sealed Great Witch Xing Tian, Yang Jian received three axe techniques and borrowed the War God's Axe.

  • Xing Tian's Origin Essence blood elevated Yang Jian's body and cultivation so he could bear the axe's baleful intent 678.
  • The axe techniques enabled him to kill the mid-stage Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal Nether Sea Mystic Roc with a single strike 680.
  • The War God's Axe is intended to break formations, restrictions, and Peach Mountain's seal 673 678.
  • Yang Jian promised to aid Xing Tian's future revival in exchange for borrowing the weapon, binding himself to immense karma 678.
  • The axe is extremely heavy and carries violent battle intent; it demands exceptional physical strength and resolve to wield 678 711.

Combat and Leadership

Yang Jian is a direct, highly mobile combatant who pairs overwhelming body strength with tactical judgment.

  • He shattered the Heavenly Court's Heavenly Net Formation and defeated the Divine Might Heavenly General in single combat 653 654.
  • He created a protective avatar within the Erlang Temple to guard Guanjiang Mouth while he sought a breakthrough 650 651.
  • He organized the Seven Monsters of Mount Mei, subdued Golden Toad, and ordered Mount Mei's forces to become a disciplined stronghold 656 668 671.
  • He later gathered Mount Mei's demon kings and one hundred thousand demons for the assault on Peach Mountain 715 720.
