Historical Significance

Konoha was founded after Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha made their oath beside the Naka River. Uchiha Toko later invoked the river as proof that the Uchiha share Konoha's homeland, water, and livelihood with the rest of the village 6 111.

The Konoha Hero Memorial depicts the founders' pledge beside the river among its reliefs of major village events 137.

A proposed relocation of the Land of Fire's capital to Konoha relied in part on a geomancer's claim that the river's course resembled a soaring dragon, making it an auspicious capital site 121.

Sites and Institutions

• Naka River Shrine — An Uchiha clan shrine by the river that preserves the clan's stone tablet. Uchiha Toko meets Black Zetsu there on multiple occasions 107 288 291.
• Naka River detention facility — A special prison built by the river for high-ranking detainees; Jiraiya, the former advisors, and other political prisoners are held there at different points 63 71 103.
• Naka River Grand Hotel — Used as an interrogation site during the detention of Jiraiya, Nara Shikaku, Yamanaka Inoichi, and Akimichi Choza 103.
• Naka River Theology Seminar / Theological Research Institute — A religious institution whose graduates include clergy from the Land of Fire; it later employs Shion's Konoha escort team 121 245.

Story Role

Military Police Force punishments

The river becomes the setting for Kakashi Hatake's coercive demonstration against grain merchants who defy Konoha's price controls. Bound merchants are thrown into the water, forced to endure ninjutsu detonated around them, then treated by Military Police Force medics before agreeing to lower prices 131.

The incident is publicly framed as the First Naka River Underwater Swimming Competition 131.

Symbol of intimidation

• Religious figures fear the Military Police Force's so-called “Naka River Bone-Setting Therapy” during the investigation into anti-Toko physiognomy rumors 109.
