Background / History

Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, known as White Fang, and the Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze’s only surviving disciple. Following Minato’s death, he spends six years in the Anbu while remaining immersed in grief. His withdrawal leaves both Naruto and Minato’s former followers without the support he could have provided 9 14 26 33.

The Hatake family’s inherited swordsmanship forms part of his martial background. White Fang, the family’s renowned chakra short sword, shattered during the battle at Kannabi Bridge and remains enshrined in the clan shrine. Hiruzen later proposes reforging it and reviving Kakashi’s sword training as a route toward Kage-level strength, but Kakashi declines the accompanying offer to become Fifth Hokage 69.

Toko deliberately cultivates Kakashi as an ally because of his connection to Minato’s old guard. He also recognizes that helping restore Sakumo’s reputation could unite Kakashi’s family legacy, Minato’s supporters, and the Uchiha faction 14.

Appearance

Kakashi is recognizable by his white hair and later displays two crimson Mangekyō Sharingan with Fūma Shuriken-shaped patterns 9 175 176.

  • Masks: Wears an Anbu mask during his first appearance; Minato remembers him as a boy who habitually hid behind a mask 9 314.
  • Face: Described as somewhat androgynous when unmasked. Naruto sees his face during an attempted prank 46 59.
  • Forehead protector: Raises it to expose his Sharingan while observing Toko’s chakra-control demonstration 89.
  • Sealed eyes: Later voluntarily releases a seal over his eyes to reveal both Mangekyō Sharingan to the First and Second Hokage 266.

Personality

Initially reserved and burdened by grief, Kakashi struggles to confront revelations about his father. At the ruined Root base, he suppresses his desire to question Toko despite being visibly shaken by the documents shown to him 9.

Toko’s guidance pushes him toward responsibility rather than isolation. Kakashi leaves the Anbu, acknowledges the people he neglected, and thanks his former colleagues at a farewell banquet attended by sixty ninja. His care for Naruto develops into a warm domestic relationship, with shopping trips, shared meals, and patience toward the boy’s growing independence 26 33 43 46 87.

He becomes increasingly politically perceptive. He defends Toko with a knowingly misleading account of their mission and recognizes that accepting Hiruzen’s Hokage offer without sufficient strength could make him a puppet. He also bluntly warns Jiraiya that entering the village’s factional struggle without the ability to manage it will worsen matters 33 69 88.

His loyalty to Toko eventually includes coercion, extortion, and threats against families. He shows no remorse while extracting money and political support from nobles, and later treats Kirigakure’s conflict with cold pragmatism, emphasizing Konoha’s compensation and past wartime losses 109 110 175. As Sixth Hokage, he assumes a more administrative role focused on reconstruction, public safety, and peaceful development 327 328.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Kakashi earns recognition as the Copy Ninja through his use of a transplanted Sharingan, later expanding his capabilities with a second Mangekyō Sharingan 9 105 175.

  • Copies ninjutsu, although Toko criticizes his dependence on techniques whose chakra costs exceed his reserves 89.
  • Uses the Sharingan’s dynamic vision to assist with aiming Railgun projectiles 89.
  • Employs genjutsu to put Naruto to sleep when he attempts to overhear a private conversation 69.
  • His lack of Uchiha blood leaves even one Sharingan a persistent drain on his chakra. Sustaining two Mangekyō Sharingan requires a fighting style built around conserving energy 176.
  • Heavy Mangekyō use damages his body and causes bloody tears 177.

Kamui

Kamui provides spatial transportation, offensive distortion, and intangibility 175 176 318.

  • Travels through warped space and relocates another ninja directly beside himself 175.
  • Uses spatial distortion to lethally separate a Kirigakure ninja’s body 175.
  • Turns intangible to let Zabuza’s sword pass through him 176.
  • Sends the Kubikiribōchō into the void and redirects a Tailed Beast Bomb toward the Mizukage Building 176.
  • Attempts to tear apart Madara and the head of his Perfect Susanoo. Madara counters by using Rinnegan eye power to stabilize the distorted space 318.

Lightning Style: Chidori and Lightning Blade

Lightning Style is Kakashi’s principal offensive specialty. His self-created Lightning Blade is an S-rank technique with a formidable record against jonin-level opponents 59 89.

  • Threatens the Lightning Blade to compel the Jonin Squad to withdraw without a battle 59.
  • Uses Chidori’s explosive movement to attack the masked Obito and create distance during their confrontation 100.
  • Exchanges Chidori for Toko’s Railgun instruction, allowing Toko to use it in Sasuke’s training 89 176.
  • Supplies Lightning Style experimental material for the Aburame Clan’s Lightning-Eating Insect research 217.

Railgun and Electromagnetic Combat

Railgun converts Lightning Style-generated electrical currents into a magnetic field that accelerates metal projectiles. Kakashi masters it after studying Toko’s instructions 89 176.

  • Fires refined-steel balls with enough force to crack the Kubikiribōchō and penetrate Zabuza’s torso 176.
  • Creates the magnetic field before becoming intangible; the prepared field continues accelerating and firing the steel balls afterward 176.
  • Uses this separation between preparation and impact to attack while maintaining Kamui intangibility 176.
  • Relies on precise chakra control and Sharingan-assisted targeting rather than large chakra expenditure 89.
  • Builds a wrist-mounted storage mechanism holding twenty steel balls 176.

Tailed Beast Control

Kakashi uses Mangekyō eye power to exploit Obito’s existing control over Yagura and the Three-Tails 177.

  • Enters the Three-Tails’ internal space and recognizes the matching Mangekyō imprint on Yagura 177.
  • Reasserts control when Yagura briefly regains consciousness 177.
  • Forces Yagura to burn his life force to empower the Three-Tails, sending it into a reckless battle against the Six-Tails 177.
  • Suffers substantial bodily damage while sustaining this control 177.

Rasengan, Sealing, and Instruction

Kakashi knows the Rasengan but rarely uses it in combat because it does not suit his preferred fighting style 162.

  • Demonstrates the Rasengan while helping Toko teach Naruto 162.
  • Teaches Naruto the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique after receiving its scroll from Hiruzen 70 136.
  • Considers his sealing skill respectable by Ninja World standards and can recognize the complexity of Toko’s layered seal on the Six-Tails 179.
  • Studies archery and Kyudo under Toko 21 26.

Tactical and Administrative Skills

Kakashi develops from a cautious mission strategist into a factional leader and senior administrator 30 59 155.

  • Warns his team not to assume Orochimaru is dead after an apparently decisive attack 30.
  • Deduces that the masked Obito must become physical to attack, then adjusts his feints and movement accordingly 100.
  • Coordinates coercive operations against officials through the Naka River Special Squad 109 110.
  • Represents Toko while showing a foreign delegate Konoha’s factories and Military Police Force 155.
  • As Sixth Hokage, handles matters ranging from Ōtsutsuki investigations to agricultural projections 328.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Railgun training scroll — Given by Toko in exchange for Chidori 89.
  • Swift Lightning blade — Received from Toko alongside Railgun instruction 89.
  • Steel-ball bracer — A self-designed mechanism storing twenty refined-steel balls, each no more than two centimeters in diameter 176.
  • Kubikiribōchō — Taken from the defeated Zabuza using Kamui 176.

  • White Fang — The shattered Hatake chakra short sword, kept in the clan shrine rather than used as an active weapon 69.

Relationships

  • Naruto Uzumaki — Adopted ward and his teacher’s son. Caring for Naruto becomes the reason Kakashi leaves the Anbu and resists treating the boy solely as a Jinchuriki 26 33 59.
  • Uchiha Toko — Mentor, political ally, and eventual predecessor as Hokage. Toko teaches him archery and Railgun, gives him Obito’s eye, and prepares him to become Sixth Hokage 21 89 105 314.
  • Minato Namikaze — Former teacher. Kakashi inherits the loyalty of Minato’s old guard and later reunites with him following his resurrection through Impure World Reincarnation 14 59 314.

  • Might Guy — Lifelong best friend and trusted combat partner. Guy supports him during the Jonin Squad confrontation and accompanies him to Kirigakure 59 175.
  • Shiranui Genma and Namiashi Raidō — Former comrades under Minato. They rally behind Kakashi after he adopts Naruto and entrust him with leadership during the village confrontation 59 65.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former superior. Approves his departure from the Anbu and guardianship of Naruto, but unsuccessfully tries to draw him away from Toko by offering the Fifth Hokage position 33 69 70.
  • Jiraiya — Fellow protector of Naruto, though Kakashi criticizes his political judgment. Kakashi nevertheless approves sending Naruto to Mount Myoboku when the masked man’s reappearance threatens his safety 88 93.
  • Uchiha Inaho — Subordinate in coercive operations against nobles; performs the Hell Viewing Technique at Kakashi’s order 109 110.
  • Obito Uchiha and Rin — Personal losses that shape his conduct in Kirigakure. After obtaining Obito’s eye, Kakashi speaks of using their combined power to obtain justice for Rin 105 176 177.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Root Investigation and Recovery from Grief

Kakashi first arrives with the Anbu after Toko clears the Root base. Toko shows him a partially burned document naming Sakumo and the other participants in his father’s pivotal mission, with “silenced” marked beside their names. The document’s presentation is manipulated: Toko himself places and partially burns the papers before the Anbu arrives 9.

During the Orochimaru mission, Kakashi seeks Toko’s guidance and resolves to leave the Anbu. After returning, he defends the team against the advisors’ accusations and secures Hiruzen’s permission to care for Naruto 26 30 33.

Naruto’s Guardian and Minato’s Political Heir

Kakashi’s adoption of Naruto gives Minato’s former subordinates a reason to rally around him. With Guy’s support, he stops the Jonin Squad from advancing against the Military Police Force, then introduces Naruto to his father’s old followers at a Uchiha banquet 59 65.

He rejects Hiruzen’s proposal to become Fifth Hokage and instead joins the Military Police Force to detain and interrogate criminals with special identities. Before leaving on a Kirigakure-related assignment, he entrusts Naruto to Mikoto Uchiha; later, he agrees to Jiraiya’s plan to move Naruto to Mount Myoboku for protection 69 70 89 93.

Toko’s Rise and Coercive Enforcement

Kakashi fights during the confrontation involving Itachi, the Ino-Shika-Cho, and the masked Obito. He identifies part of Obito’s intangibility mechanism but is nearly killed when sudden pain in his Sharingan disrupts his movement. Toko intervenes and removes him from the immediate danger 99 100.

As leader of the Naka River Special Squad, Kakashi abducts nobles and officials opposing Toko’s appointment, holds their families, and uses genjutsu-backed coercion to obtain political support and four billion ryō. After Toko becomes Fifth Hokage, Kakashi takes command of the Military Police Force 109 110 111.

His subsequent duties include apprehending the organizers of unrest, implementing the Three Purities Education program, and arresting grain merchants who coordinate closures to resist price reductions 115 128 131.

Kirigakure Intervention

Kakashi and Guy lead Konoha’s reinforcements to support the Fourth Mizukage. Kakashi defeats Zabuza with his new Railgun–Kamui combination, deliberately avoiding a fatal shot because Toko has instructed him to preserve the rebellion’s senior figures where possible 175 176.

He then controls the Three-Tails through Yagura and attacks the Six-Tails. When Akatsuki arrives demanding the Tailed Beasts, Kakashi refuses to surrender them; Toko intervenes to save him from the resulting assault 177.

Final Crisis and Hokage Succession

While serving Toko’s government, Kakashi participates in purges of old nobles resisting the Federal Land of Fire and rejoins the resurrected Minato at a gathering of Hokage. Toko openly identifies him as the future Sixth Hokage 314.

During the battle against Madara, Kakashi attempts Kamui attacks alongside the allied forces. Madara counters his spatial distortion, and Kakashi later expends his remaining strength in the final assault against the pseudo Ten-Tails Jinchuriki 318 320.

Kakashi ultimately becomes Sixth Hokage and oversees Konoha’s reconstruction. During the federation’s second year, he joins Shikamaru and Ōnoki in supervising Deidara’s mountain-clearing project for regional exchange, prioritizing geological and public safety. Sasuke eventually succeeds him as Seventh Hokage 327 328.
