Background / History
Education under Uchiha Toko
Fugaku arranges for Sasuke to learn Lightning Style from Uchiha Toko. Eager to improve and please his father, Sasuke accepts, but his first lessons focus on memorizing Confucian classics rather than learning ninjutsu. Toko intends this education to shape his worldview as well as his fighting ability 36 37.
His practical training begins with controlled Lightning Ball and later expands into Thunder-Stepping Body Flicker. Toko initially withholds the advanced portions because Sasuke’s chakra reserves cannot support his teacher’s more demanding techniques 38 73 74.
Disagreement with Itachi
When Itachi returns from a mission, he discovers that Sasuke has adopted Toko’s defense of the Military Police Force. Sasuke considers forceful action against villagers spreading accusations about Kakashi to be lawful enforcement; Itachi argues that violence deepens the divide between the clan and village 73 75.
After the confrontation that ends in Itachi’s death, Sasuke seeks Toko’s explanation of his brother’s actions. Toko describes the clan’s suppression and frames Itachi’s failure as choosing the opposing side rather than simply committing a moral wrong. The lesson unsettles Sasuke’s understanding of right and wrong, and his two-tomoe Sharingan activates during their conversation 101 105.
Academy Rivalry and Team 7
Sasuke and Naruto form the Seven Stars Alliance at the Academy, where their activities include skipping classes and playing pranks. They also help stop students from mocking Karin’s red hair 129 143.
Thunder-Stepping initially allows Sasuke to outmaneuver Naruto and his Shadow Clones. Naruto eventually learns the footwork needed to counter that advantage and defeats him in a sparring match, although dangerous techniques such as Sasuke’s simplified Chidori remain prohibited 136 145.
After graduation, Toko places Sasuke, Naruto, and Neji together under his personal leadership. The team passes the Hokage’s test to bypass D-rank missions 187 188 193.
Early Missions and the Joint Chunin Exams
During the Land of Snow mission, Sasuke uses Chidori Stream and Purple Lightning against armored ambushers. He also recognizes that an A-rank assignment involving a film crew must conceal circumstances serious enough to attract jonin-level opposition 194 195.
Before the Joint Chunin Exams, Sasuke visits Itachi’s memorial and vows to forge his own path. Kaede warns him that Naruto’s growing cooperation with Kurama undermines the advantage his three-tomoe Sharingan normally provides against jinchūriki 207.
In the exams, Sasuke defeats Omoi’s team with Lightning Ball and secures a chakra-metal short blade rather than pursuing the retreating opponents. He negotiates an alliance with Kurotsuchi, ostensibly dividing advancement places among Konoha, Iwagakure, Kirigakure, and Amegakure 211 212.
Neither Sasuke nor Kurotsuchi intends to honor the agreement fully. Working with Shikamaru, Sasuke gathers Konoha’s teams and prepares an ambush. When Kurotsuchi attacks him, she catches only a Shadow Clone; the real Sasuke appears with his allies and helps lead the counterattack 215 219.
Valley of the End
When Naruto leaves Konoha to pursue his own path, Sasuke follows and attempts to bring him back. Their fight at the Valley of the End pushes Sasuke into awakening his Mangekyō Sharingan, whose lightning destroys the structure of Naruto’s Rasengan 238 239.
Despite using skeletal Susanoo and Mangekyō genjutsu, Sasuke cannot overcome Naruto and Kurama. Kurama breaks the genjutsu and expels Sasuke from Naruto’s sealing space. Sasuke’s repeated use of his new powers leaves him exhausted, with damaged chakra pathways requiring Tsunade’s treatment 240 242.
He wakes surrounded by friends and apologizes for failing to retrieve Naruto. Toko explains that a newly awakened Mangekyō is insufficient against Naruto’s near-complete Nine-Tails cooperation, then assigns Sasuke another mission partly to help him recover emotionally 244.
Shion’s Escort and the Hyuga Rescue
On Shion’s escort mission, Sasuke insists on completing the assignment to protect the mission record he believes necessary for becoming Hokage. Against Mōryō’s enhanced attackers, he coordinates with Neji and uses black lightning to destroy their regenerating bodies, but the effort rapidly drains his chakra and blurs his sight 254 255.
After Toneri abducts Hinata and Hanabi, Sasuke recognizes that his current strength is inadequate. He takes out Itachi’s preserved Sharingan, which Toko entrusted to him after his Mangekyō awakening, and decides to use them to help Neji rescue his cousins 276.
The eyes fully fuse into the Eternal Mangekyō during the lunar battle. Sasuke uses Takemikazuchi to destroy chakra chains binding the Nine-Tails, then fights alongside Naruto against Toneri’s Reincarnation Golem. Their combined strength cannot stop its relentless attacks until Neji disrupts its power source through his Tenseigan 280 281.
Black Zetsu and the Six Paths Battle
Black Zetsu approaches Sasuke in the Uchiha shrine while claiming to embody Indra’s will. Sasuke rejects the claim internally and suspects an attempt to turn him against Toko. He feigns interest to investigate the intruder’s identity and purpose 283.
Sasuke later fights beside Naruto, Neji, and the former Hokage against Madara. Their combined attacks prove insufficient, and Madara’s pseudo Ten-Tails form leaves the three young fighters near death 317 318 320.
Hagoromo draws Naruto and Sasuke’s souls into a separate space and identifies them as reincarnations of Asura’s and Indra’s chakra. Sasuke rejects the idea that this determines his identity, attributing his convictions to Toko and his own experiences. He also challenges Hagoromo’s succession system as politically unstable 321.
Returning with Six Paths Yin power and a six-tomoe Rinnegan, Sasuke helps Naruto stabilize Might Guy and rejoins Neji. Rather than immediately accepting Black Zetsu’s proposed alliance, he exploits the hostility between Kaguya and Isshiki to keep both sides wary. Toko subsequently returns to lead his disciples against them 323 324 325.
Seventh Hokage
Sasuke eventually becomes the Seventh Hokage, marries Karin, and has a daughter, Sarada. His workload strains family life: forgetting his wedding anniversary prompts Sarada to resolve to become strong enough to defeat him 329.
When Naruto accepts Sarada as a disciple, Sasuke responds with surprise and concern about his friend’s teaching methods. The two also discuss the continuing threat posed by the Ōtsutsuki Clan 331.
Personality
Sasuke begins as a diligent pupil who wants his father’s approval and eagerly pursues new techniques. His pride in being an Uchiha makes the possibility of the clan’s decline unacceptable to him 36 37 105 144.
Toko’s education makes him assertive, pragmatic, and attentive to political interests. He defends punishment as a deterrent, considers alliances tools for advancing Konoha’s position, and has no intention of surrendering exam opportunities merely to keep an agreement with another village 75 215.
His competitiveness can become stubbornness. Losing an Academy spar to Naruto nearly leads him to further injury, while his failure to retrieve Naruto leaves him openly frustrated. Nevertheless, his loyalty extends beyond rivalry: he risks his strength and eyesight to support Neji and rescue the Hyuga sisters 145 244 276.
Sasuke is skeptical of imposed identities and suspicious authority. He refuses to accept Black Zetsu’s ancestral claims at face value and rejects Hagoromo’s suggestion that Indra’s reincarnation defines him. His ambition is explicitly his own: to become Hokage through the path shaped by his teacher and experiences 283 321.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Style and Nintaijutsu
Lightning Style is Sasuke’s principal combat specialty, developed under Toko’s instruction.
- Lightning Ball — His first learned Lightning Style technique. By the Chunin Exams, he produces four dense purple spheres with flowing plasma, drawing Ōnoki’s praise for his control over a basic C-rank technique 38 211.
- Thunder-Stepping Body Flicker — Combines movement training with Lightning Style; serves as the introductory technique for Toko’s Lightning Release Chakra Mode 74.
- Chidori — Initially learns a simplified version, then uses Chidori-enhanced swordsmanship to cut through Iwagakure’s stone formations 145 219.
- Chidori Stream — Releases electricity around his body, disrupting Snow ninja attacks and melting their armor 195.
- Lightning Flash Waterfall — Sends a rolling wave of electric plasma toward enemies; opposing Fire and Wind techniques can counter the attack 255.
- Limits — His early instruction is restricted by chakra reserves and control. Academy sparring prohibits his more destructive ninjutsu 73 74 145.
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Sasuke combines the Sharingan’s visual tracking with genjutsu instruction from Shisui.
- Tracks Omoi’s lightning-fast movement and coordinates precise, wire-guided shuriken attacks 211.
- Forces opponents to avoid his gaze, restricting how freely they can fight 211.
- Uses Mangekyō genjutsu to briefly immobilize Naruto and enter his sealing space 239.
- Limits — Three-tomoe genjutsu provides little restraint against a jinchūriki cooperating with their tailed beast. Kurama can disrupt Sasuke’s control over Naruto 207 240.
Takemikazuchi
One of Sasuke’s Mangekyō abilities summons lightning capable of annihilating chakra 244.
- Destroys the chakra structure of Naruto’s Rasengan 239.
- Annihilates the bodies of Mōryō’s regenerating attackers 255.
- Breaks the chakra chains restraining the Nine-Tails during the fight against Toneri 280.
Kembutsu no Mikoto
His complementary Mangekyō ability controls the form of the chakra-annihilating lightning 244.
- Shapes black lightning into blades for close-range combat 255.
- Replenishes those blades as contact with enemies consumes them 255.
- Limits — Sustained use rapidly drains chakra and causes blurred vision before his Eternal Mangekyō advancement 255.
Susanoo
Sasuke manifests skeletal Susanoo after awakening his Mangekyō Sharingan.
- Blocks strikes from Naruto’s chakra claws during their Valley of the End battle 239.
- Limits — Even repeated use of the basic skeletal form causes severe pain and strains his newly awakened eyes 240.
Six Paths Power and Amenotejikara
Hagoromo grants Sasuke Six Paths Yin power, a left-palm moon mark associated with Six Paths: Planetary Devastation, and a six-tomoe Rinnegan in his right eye 323 324.
- Helps Naruto stabilize the critically injured Might Guy 324.
- Uses Amenotejikara to shift attacks at crucial moments, making Kaguya’s and Isshiki’s killing moves miss or cancel one another 325.
Swordsmanship, Tactics, and Leadership
Sasuke’s fighting style combines blade work, visual precision, deception, and coordination.
- Uses wire-controlled shuriken to block every available approach to a contested weapon 211.
- Negotiates resources and advancement places rather than treating the Chunin Exams solely as individual combat 212.
- Uses a Shadow Clone to expose Kurotsuchi’s ambush without endangering his real body 219.
- Takes command of a combined Uchiha–Hyuga assault unit during battle 224.
- Coordinates attacks with Neji’s reconnaissance and delegates detailed battlefield planning to Shikamaru 215 255.
- Manipulates a three-sided confrontation to preserve freedom of action instead of immediately committing to either enemy faction 324.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Purple Lightning — Sasuke’s principal sword, forged from exceptionally high-quality chakra metal by the Land of Water’s greatest swordsmith. Unlike the exam-provided blade, it withstands his full chakra output 188 223.
- Chakra-metal short blade — Secured after driving off Omoi’s team during the Joint Chunin Exams. Its lower quality forces him to limit the chakra he channels through it 212 223.
- Shuriken and steel wire — Used together for precise trajectory control and restricting enemy movement 211.
- Vision-sharing device — Tenten’s equipment combines Sasuke’s Sharingan tracking with Neji’s Byakugan sight and shares those advantages with their companions 224 254.
- Itachi’s preserved Sharingan — Given to Sasuke by Toko after his Mangekyō awakening; later used to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō 276 280.
- Messenger Snake — Delivers his rendezvous instructions to Seven Stars Alliance members during the exams 215.
Relationships
- Uchiha Toko — Teacher and team leader. Trains Sasuke in Lightning Style, political judgment, and leadership; Sasuke credits him with shaping his identity and ambitions 36 105 187 321.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Father. Arranges Sasuke’s instruction under Toko, while Sasuke initially seeks to please him through his studies 36.
- Uchiha Mikoto — Mother. Maintains Itachi’s former room after his death; Sasuke returns there when deciding to use his brother’s eyes 73 276.
- Uchiha Itachi — Older brother. Their affection survives a serious ideological disagreement, and Itachi’s preserved eyes later become the basis of Sasuke’s Eternal Mangekyō 74 75 276 280.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Academy rival, teammate, and treasured comrade. Their relationship includes pranks, arguments, a failed attempt to bring Naruto home, and cooperation against overwhelming enemies 129 187 240 281 325.
- Neji Hyuga — Teammate and trusted partner. Provides reconnaissance and combat support; Sasuke strengthens his eyes specifically to help rescue Neji’s cousins 212 255 276.
- Uchiha Shisui — Genjutsu instructor, whom Sasuke addresses as “Shisui-nii” 207.
- Karin — Academy friend and later wife. Sasuke helps defend her from bullying; they eventually become Sarada’s parents 143 329.
- Sarada Uchiha — Daughter. Resents his absence and forgotten anniversary, then apprentices under Naruto with the goal of becoming strong enough to defeat him 329 331.
- Shikamaru Nara — Strategic collaborator. Organizes Konoha’s exam battle plan while Sasuke gathers allies and directs broader decisions 215 219.
- Kurotsuchi — Temporary exam ally and tactical rival. Both negotiate cooperation while preparing to betray the agreement 212 215 219.
- Kaede — Informant who warns him about Naruto’s improved cooperation with Kurama and the limitations of three-tomoe genjutsu 207.
