Background / History

Konoha and the Valley of the End

Madara founded Konoha alongside Hashirama Senju and served as the Uchiha clan head. Their conflicting ideals eventually drove him to leave the village. Almost none of his clansmen supported his departure, but he did not attack them and defected alone 447 448 497.

He refused to recognize Hashirama’s peace treaty with the Stone ninja and severely injured the young Ōnoki, leaving an impression that endured for decades. Hashirama later defeated him at the Valley of the End 434 455.

Tobirama sealed and studied what he believed to be Madara’s corpse. Madara nevertheless survived in secret; when Orochimaru investigated the empty tomb, the reanimated Tobirama suspected that Izanagi had enabled him to fake his death 345 408.

Selecting Obito

Madara chose Obito as his successor despite White Zetsu’s suggestion that Ichie, with her early Sharingan awakening and younger sister, offered a better prospect for developing the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. White Zetsu impersonated Obito’s grandmother as part of a scheme involving the loss of both his grandmother and his lover 15.

After Obito’s presumed death at Kannabi Bridge, Madara sheltered him in an underground hideout while he recovered with patches of white tissue grafted onto his body. Obito initially felt grateful to the old man who identified himself as Madara Uchiha 91.

Madara died during the Third Great Ninja War period, leaving Obito to act under his name. Obito later questioned why Madara had created Black Zetsu immediately before dying 255 433 445.

Return at the Five Kage Summit

Orochimaru and Black Zetsu arranged Madara’s return through Impure World Reincarnation. On learning about the Ōtsutsuki and the transformed state of the ninja world, Madara discovered that his knowledge was badly outdated 432 433.

At the Five Kage Summit, Ōnoki recognized the genuine Madara. Madara overwhelmed the assembled fighters with Wood Release and Wood Clones, each protected by a fourth-stage Susanoo. Their familiarity with his techniques irritated him almost as much as the discovery that two people were using his name 434 435.

He overpowered Ichie and Izumi before confronting the Eye Organization’s leader. Hitomi’s Tenseigan attacks shattered much of his Perfect Susanoo, and Madara subsequently appeared before Naruto with only one eye remaining 436 438 443.

Conflict with the Akatsuki and Ōtsutsuki

Madara confronted Obito and Nagato, exposing his earlier manipulations and the origin of Nagato’s Rinnegan. Nagato and other Akatsuki members fought him together; Might Duy’s Seventh Gate attack breached his Susanoo and earned his recognition 444 445.

In the Land of Wind, Gen’ichi’s multiplying Cancer Clones defeated Madara’s Wood Clones. Madara had to personally eliminate the surviving cells with Rinnegan techniques. He then pursued Karin to investigate Isshiki, confronting the Ōtsutsuki when Isshiki took control of her body 468 469.

Madara’s confidence in Perfect Susanoo proved insufficient against Isshiki. News of his defeat spread through the ninja world, while their encounter also exposed him to further information about the Sage of Six Paths, Kaguya, and the Moon 471 472.

War Preparations and Resurrection

Madara returned to Konoha and fought Ichie, whose Sage Susanoo and sealing strategy neutralized two of his Limbo clones. Unable to resolve the fight in his favor, he withdrew and demanded the Two-Tails’ chakra from Gen’ichi. He subsequently explained the Ten-Tails to the Akatsuki as they prepared its revival 497 498 499.

Orochimaru sent his soul back to the Pure Land while preparations continued. Black Zetsu secretly regarded Madara as the most suitable vessel for Kaguya because he intended to become the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki and did not distrust it 500.

During the war, Madara used Obito to resurrect himself in a powerful new body. He ordered Tobi to preserve Obito’s last breath, promising to place him in Infinite Tsukuyomi as recognition of his sacrifice 508 510.

Madara remained active as the battlefield escalated. He attempted to interfere with Sasuke’s absorption of the Small Ten-Tails through Limbo, and later faced Gen’ichi and Planet Godzilla with an increasing sense that he had overlooked something crucial 525 528.

Appearance

  • Elderly living body: Appears as an old man while sheltering Obito underground 91.
  • Reanimated body: Covered in cracks; damaged portions break into fragments and reconstruct themselves 438 443.
  • Long hair: Streams behind him when he surveys Konoha from the air 497.
  • Rinnegan: His reanimated appearance includes the distinctive eyes, although he has only one remaining when confronting Naruto after fighting Hitomi 438 443.

Personality

Madara is commanding, proud, and openly contemptuous of opponents he considers inferior. He dismisses ordinary Mangekyō Sharingan as worthless to him and expects obedience even from his collaborators. Discovering how familiar modern shinobi are with his techniques unsettles his assumption that his power should astonish everyone 434 436 465.

His arrogance does not prevent tactical adaptation. He takes Hitomi seriously after their initial exchanges and painstakingly checks that none of Gen’ichi’s regenerative clone cells remain alive. He also acknowledges exceptional opponents, praising Might Duy’s taijutsu and admitting that Ichie has surpassed his past self 440 445 469 498.

He presents coercion and sacrifice as contributions to world peace. After using Obito for his resurrection, he calls the act worthy of respect and promises him “Permanent Peace” through Infinite Tsukuyomi rather than accepting responsibility for the betrayal 508 510.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara’s evolved Sharingan underpins his Susanoo and provides exceptionally powerful ocular techniques 345 472.

  • Izanagi: Retains two possible uses during the confrontation following Ichie’s battle 499.
  • Delayed revival: His Eternal Mangekyō can activate Izanagi days after death, making straightforward killing an unreliable way to stop him 499.
  • Countering illusions: Breaks the Izanagi and Izanami techniques used against him by the Uchiha sisters 436.

Susanoo

Madara manifests a blue Susanoo and can use its Complete Form, also called Perfect Susanoo 434 438 469.

  • Clone deployment: Equips Wood Clones with fourth-stage Susanoo and controls dozens simultaneously 434 469.
  • Destructive force: Complete Form attacks can cleave mountains 437.
  • Repair: Rapidly restores a damaged Susanoo during battle 445.
  • Limits: Hitomi’s Tenseigan attacks severely damage it; Might Duy’s Seventh Gate taijutsu breaches its defenses 438 444.

Wood Release

Madara combines Hashirama’s Wood Release with his own ocular power 434 468.

  • Forest creation: Produces large-scale trees and pollen; opponents use Wind Release to disperse the pollen 434.
  • Wood Clones: Creates multiple powerful duplicates capable of fighting Kage-level opponents through Susanoo 468.
  • Battlefield pressure: His clone army can overwhelm groups rather than relying on a single giant construct 435 469.
  • Limit: Gen’ichi’s regenerative Cancer Clones defeat his Wood Clones 468 469.

Rinnegan and Limbo: Border Jail

Madara’s Rinnegan evolved from his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and retains access to Susanoo 437 522.

  • Tengai Shinsei: Summons a meteorite against the summit’s defenders 436.
  • Human Path: Severs the spiritual connections sustaining Gen’ichi’s clone cells 469.
  • Preta Path: Drains the clones’ chakra during their elimination 469.
  • Restraint: Immobilizes Might Duy with a Rinnegan pressure technique 445.
  • Limbo: Creates clones that Ichie cannot directly sense or strike through ordinary means 498.
  • Limbo counters: Six Paths power can harm the clones; Ichie’s coordinated illusion and Totsuka Blade strategy seals two of them 498.
  • Later resistance: Sasuke physically repels a Limbo clone and pins it with Black Rods 525.

Yin–Yang Release

  • Creates Black Rods and exchanges them against Isshiki’s constructs with comparable control of Yin–Yang Release 469.
  • Yin–Yang Release rods are among the means capable of affecting Limbo clones 498.

Regeneration and Sensory Abilities

  • Reanimated regeneration: Reconstructs damaged body parts during Impure World Reincarnation 438 469.
  • Golem body: His resurrected body withstands Naruto and Minato’s coordinated attacks 508.
  • Wide-area sensing: With the new body, can sense approaching fighters across roughly half the planet, although his sensory ability remains inferior to Naruto’s 508.

Forbidden-Technique Knowledge

  • Understands that killing the Impure World Reincarnation caster does not automatically remove the summoned shinobi 435.
  • Claims to know how to escape the technique’s restrictions 446.
  • Plans to use the Moon as the medium for a worldwide Infinite Tsukuyomi after becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki 469.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Uchiha Fan — Formerly associated with Madara and believed by Minato to have been sealed with his body; later wielded by Obito as evidence of their connection 253.
  • Susanoo katanas and magatama — Weapons produced through his Susanoo 222.
  • Outer Path Demonic Statue — Central to his Ten-Tails preparations; summoned after his bodily resurrection 510.

  • Izuna — His eyes supplied the transplant associated with Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 472.
  • Obito Uchiha — Chosen successor who inherited his identity; eventually used as the sacrifice for his resurrection 15 253 508.
  • White Zetsu — Subordinate used for infiltration and manipulation; Madara dismisses it as a poor replica of Hashirama 15.
  • Black Zetsu — Trusted collaborator secretly intending to turn him into Kaguya’s vessel 500.
  • Orochimaru — Reanimation caster and uneasy partner whose control Madara repeatedly undermines 435 465.
  • Nagato — Recipient of Madara’s Rinnegan and a target of his past manipulation; fights him after learning the truth 444.
  • Gen’ichi Shiranui / Hitomi — Rival whose Tenseigan attacks and regenerative clones force Madara to reassess his superiority 438 440 469.
  • Ichie Uchiha — Opponent he initially dismisses, then acknowledges as stronger than his former self; her sealing strategy frustrates his Limbo advantage 436 498.
  • Might Duy — Taijutsu specialist whose ability to breach Susanoo earns Madara’s explicit praise 444 445.
  • Ōnoki — Carries decades of resentment over the humiliation Madara inflicted on him in his youth 434.
  • Isshiki Ōtsutsuki — An opponent Madara seeks out to test the ancestral bloodline’s power; their battle ends in Madara’s defeat 465 469 472.
