Background / History

Duy was widely dismissed as Konoha's “Eternal Genin.” Unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu and possessing only taijutsu, he was considered unfit even for expendable combat duties. He took occasional logistical work during the war, while he and Guy endured public mockery and struggled to afford the food required for their punishing training regimen. 4

Gen'ichi Shiranui supported Duy and Guy for over two years, using his own savings to post low-paying jobs such as woodcutting, housework, and rooftop cleaning specifically for them. Duy came to regard Gen'ichi with deep respect, while Guy vowed to protect Gen'ichi in return. 4 5

Duy repeatedly placed himself between Gen'ichi and danger. When Gen'ichi prepared to use Nuclear Release: White Heat against Fūjin and Raijin, Duy seized his hands despite the heat burning his palm and insisted that it was his turn to “burn” his youth. 10

During the Third Great Ninja War, Duy revealed the Eight Gates' true power. After using the Seventh Gate against the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, he later opened the Gate of Death to save Genma, Ebisu, and Hayate. Gen'ichi secretly used Re-creation and Regeneration to preserve Duy rather than allowing his death to become final.
