Background / History

Nami first appears looting the cabin of a pirate ship after two pirate crews destroy one another. She is collecting gold and treasure to reach one hundred million Beli, the amount she believes will allow her to buy Cocoyasi Village back from Arlong. Her intense fixation on money is tied to this goal rather than simple greed alone 1.

Reno discovers her theft, overpowers her, and takes the treasure. Nami immediately agrees to become navigator of the Reno Pirates in the hope of recovering it, while privately intending to escape once she has the money back 2. At this point, eight years under Arlong’s control have left her convinced that the Fish-man is invincible; she begs Reno not to travel to Cocoyasi and fears that any resistance will lead to death 3 12.

Reno gives Nami the Weather-Weather Fruit and directs her to focus on wind, thunder, and clouds. Empowered by her new abilities and driven by hatred for Arlong, she trains relentlessly with Kaya’s healing support until she can fight at Arlong Park 12 13. Nami destroys Arlong Park with sustained lightning bombardment, kills Arlong, and ends the Fish-men’s rule over Cocoyasi Village 14 15.

After the village’s liberation, Nami reunites with Nojiko, recruits her into the Reno Pirates, and visits Belle-mère’s grave with Reno. There, she expresses love for Reno and promises to care for Nojiko 15. In a later account, Nami again begins as a thief looting Alvida’s ship. Arlong’s oppression initially leaves her fearful and convinced that resistance is futile.
