Power Progression

Background and History

Tanjiro’s family was killed by demons while he was away selling charcoal. His younger sister Nezuko survived but became a demon. Hoping to help her, he trained under Urokodaki and sought entry into the Demon Slayer Corps. Through the cross-world chat group, he asked Hikari how to cut through his training boulder; she later warned him about the unusually dangerous demon awaiting candidates at Final Selection 3 4 13.

After joining the Corps, Tanjiro encountered Tamayo and Yushiro in Asakusa. He killed Yahaba during an attack on their residence but suffered severe injuries. He accepted Hikari’s request to enter his world and asked her to protect Nezuko; half a Senzu Bean from Hikari rapidly healed his wounds 38 46.

Tanjiro later traveled with Nezuko, Hikari, Bulma, Zenitsu and Inosuke on demon-hunting missions. He demonstrated all ten forms of Water Breathing for Hikari, though he acknowledged that his swordsmanship still fell short of Urokodaki’s 49 51. Hikari subsequently used Impure World Reincarnation to reunite him temporarily with his deceased family 63.

Hikari took Tanjiro to Korin Tower for training. After returning from the Dragon Ball World, he helped the Corps prepare to revive its dead and called on Hikari when attacks by the Twelve Kizuki threatened that effort. He later stated the resurrection wish to Shenron 166 232 242.

Appearance

Nearly two months into his training with Korin, Tanjiro had grown taller, and his reddish-brown hair had grown longer 215.

• Forehead mark — A dark red scar on the left side of his forehead developed into a distinct, flame-shaped Demon Slayer Mark 215.

Personality

Tanjiro is polite with the chat-group members and respectful toward teachers such as Korin. He is protective of Nezuko, asking Hikari to save her even while badly injured himself. He also hesitates to trouble others for help, although he does reach out when the Demon Slayer Corps faces a threat it cannot confidently handle 4 46 166 232.

He is willing to face stronger opponents: he fought Muzan while still a low-ranked Corps member and later entered a tournament match against Hikari despite knowing the gap between them 224. His gentle manner also helps him get along with others; during training on Namek, he quickly befriended several Namekians 370.

Abilities and Skills

Breathing Techniques

Tanjiro trains in Water Breathing and demonstrates its ten sword forms, from Water Surface Slash through Constant Flux. He later uses Hinokami Kagura against Daki and demonstrates Sun Breathing during his martial arts tournament match with Hikari 51 61 225.

• Early in his Corps career, he was still improving and did not yet understand Constant Concentration 51.
• Hikari’s intervention meant he did not encounter Rui in the battle that, in the original course of events Hikari recalled, would have prompted his ancestral memories to awaken 59.

Demon Slayer Mark and Ki

Tanjiro awakens his Demon Slayer Mark during Korin’s training and learns ki to address the mark’s drain on his life energy 215.

• With the mark’s activation stabilized, his strength, speed and stamina improve substantially 225.
• After observing his tournament match, Hikari estimates that he could defeat Demon Moons below Upper Moon Three, while judging Muzan and Kokushibo beyond his demonstrated level 225.

Iron Head

Tanjiro’s forehead is exceptionally hard. In a friendly headbutt contest, Yamato receives a small cut while Tanjiro remains unharmed 215.

Equipment and Items

• Nichirin Blade — Forged for him by Haganezuka after he passes Final Selection; the Corps uses such blades to kill demons by decapitation 38.
• Senzu Bean — Hikari gives him one during the Asakusa attack; eating half rapidly heals his injuries 46.

Relationships

• Kamado Nezuko — His younger sister. Her transformation into a demon motivates him to join the Corps, and he repeatedly seeks to protect her 4 27 46.
• Uchiha Hikari — His chat-group friend and mentor. She warns him about Final Selection, intervenes when his group is attacked, reunites him with his family and arranges his training with Korin 13 46 63 166.
• Urokodaki — His swordsmanship and Breathing Technique teacher, who sets the boulder-cutting test 4.
• Korin — His teacher in the Dragon Ball World, where Tanjiro trains and develops his ki 166 215.
• Bulma — A chat-group friend who travels with him in the Demon Slayer World and helps develop equipment for the fight against demons 48 49 234.
• Agatsuma Zenitsu and Hashibira Inosuke — Fellow demon slayers who travel and carry out missions alongside him 49 51.
• Kamado Kie and the Kamado family — His deceased family, temporarily brought back through Hikari’s Impure World Reincarnation 63.
