Background / History
Early life
Lex is Lionel Luthor's eldest son and Jino Luthor's older brother. As a child, he is frightened during the family's helicopter trip to Kansas and competes with Jino, but he also protects his younger brother from a meteor-impact shockwave by shielding him with his own body 1 2.
Although he avoids meteor-induced baldness, Lex loses all of his hair over years of schooling due to his exceptional intelligence. He later returns with Jino to the Luthor family's castle-like Smallville manor 4.
Smallville operations and research
As an heir to the Luthor family, Lex uses the family's influence to dismiss police questioning at Luthor Manor. He is also protective of Jino, considering extreme measures—including hiring assassins—when Jerome resurfaces as a threat 9.
Jerome attacks Lex by electrifying the tires of his sports car and sending it into a lake. Clark Kent rescues him from the submerged vehicle; afterward, Lex conceals the supernatural nature of the attack from police while noticing evidence that Clark possesses abnormal strength 10 11.
Lex oversees Luthor Factory and develops its underground laboratory into a center for dangerous biological and energy research. He oversees the development of a Clark-like humanoid specimen later known as Bizarro, researches Kryptonite, and helps test whether Jino is vulnerable to it 56 58.
His research extends to Amber Gold, a self-healing substance that rapidly repairs his eyelid injury, and to the Quantum Mask's interdimensional energy. During a tracking experiment, he derives coordinates leading to Jino's location from captured energy signatures 105 164 174.
Multiversal displacement
A blue-light explosion at Luthor Factory opens a spatial rift and displaces Lex into another universe. Jino later determines that the Lex who returns to the laboratory is an alternate-universe counterpart, while the original Lex has been exchanged into that counterpart's world 211.
The alternate Lex later serves as a guide for the Justice League's mission into his world, using knowledge of the material capable of crossing dimensional barriers 214.
Justice League era
Lex becomes one of the Justice League's principal analysts. When Omni-Man's Crime Syndicate invades, he provides the team with crucial intelligence on the enemy's control of resources, hostage situation in Smallville, and the disappearance of Jino and Batman 228.
Following the Batman Who Laughs' attack on Luthor Manor and Lionel's capture, Lex equips his newly completed powered armor and commits to rescuing his father despite their hostile relationship 300 301.
He later directs the construction of the Watchtower, a space station positioned between Earth and the Moon to detect and monitor distant threats 390.
Appearance
Lex is a bald young man with a smooth, rounded head. His hair loss is attributed to the strain of prolonged schooling and exceptional intelligence rather than meteor exposure 4.
- Often seen working in Luthor Factory's underground laboratories 164 174.
- Uses powered armor with a crystal mounted in its chest during combat situations 300.
- His upgraded armor changes from green to silver after Jino enhances it 301.
Personality
Lex begins as timid and fearful, particularly when confronted with immediate danger, but is also competitive with Jino and willing to physically protect him when it matters 1 2. As he matures, he becomes notably more controlled, practical, and secretive; after Clark saves him, Lex chooses to conceal the existence of metahumans rather than expose them publicly 11.
He is intensely driven by scientific curiosity. The rapid healing properties of Amber Gold immediately excite his desire to experiment, while unfamiliar quantum energy and advanced technology consistently draw his attention 105 164 395. He is confident in his own intellect and initially doubts that Dr. Erskine could surpass him scientifically 174.
Lex is increasingly dismissive of Lionel's authority, considering his father too narrow-minded to understand the scale of modern threats and research. Nevertheless, he chooses to help rescue Lionel after the Batman Who Laughs abducts him 300 301.
Abilities & Skills
Scientific Genius
Lex is an accomplished scientist with expertise in biotechnology, exotic energy, and advanced engineering.
- Oversees experiments that produce and contain Bizarro, a Clark-like humanoid specimen 56 211.
- Identifies Amber Gold's regenerative properties immediately after using it 105.
- Attempts to extract and study the energy contained within the Quantum Mask 164.
- Conducts repeated energy-tracking experiments, obtaining coordinate data from the captured energy signatures 174.
- Recognizes and seeks to study advanced extraterrestrial armor technology 395.
- His research requires specialized laboratories and can become vulnerable when superpowered intruders breach the facility 164 165.
Strategic Analysis
Lex provides the Justice League with actionable intelligence during crises.
- Assesses the Crime Syndicate's occupation of Smallville, its hostage strategy, and its resource blockade 228.
- Helps lead the Watchtower project as a proactive system for detecting threats before they reach Earth 390.
Enhanced Physiology
Lex successfully receives the Super Soldier Serum.
- Gains improved physical abilities following the experiment 222.
- The extent and specific limits of his enhanced physical capabilities have not been detailed.
Powered Armor Operation
Lex designs and pilots crystal-powered combat armor.
- The green armor's palm cannon emits a particle beam strong enough to destroy incoming rubble 300.
- The silver-enhanced configuration possesses significantly greater power than the original armor 301.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Amber Gold — A colorless, odorless regenerative substance that heals Lex's eyelid injury shortly after consumption 105.
- Red Kryptonite — Kept and studied at Luthor Chemical Plant 150.
- Quantum Mask — An opaque artifact containing energy capable of supporting interdimensional travel; Lex attempts to extract and analyze its energy 164.
