Characteristics

Soul Beasts are non-human creatures that cultivate over time. Their innate power, lifespan, bloodline, and eventual potential vary greatly by species; powerful bloodlines can determine the upper limit of a Soul Beast's growth. Given sufficient energy, they generally face few bottlenecks before reaching that bloodline limit. 406 462

• Their habitats range from terrestrial Soul Beast Forests to the sea, with the ocean supporting an especially vast and diverse Soul Beast population. 11 388
• Soul Beasts may possess elemental, physical, or rare attributes. Documented rare examples include the space-attributed Treasure Pouch Kangaroo and the six-attributed Dark Demon Evil God Tiger. 186 443

Cultivation and Heavenly Tribulations

Upon attaining 100,000 years of cultivation, a Soul Beast faces a critical choice. It may take human form, reset its cultivation, and cultivate anew as a human, or it may retain its Soul Beast form and continue cultivating. 273 395

A Soul Beast that takes human form must enter human society and remains vulnerable to detection while young. Powerful Titled Douluo can identify its true nature before it reaches level sixty; after reaching that threshold, it becomes a true human and can no longer be detected as a Soul Beast. 395

A Soul Beast that remains in its original form has roughly one thousand years before facing a Heavenly Tribulation. Surviving extends its life, but each subsequent tribulation becomes more dangerous as its cultivation increases. 395

The Heavenly Tribulations are described as a mechanism imposed through the Soul Beast bloodline by the God Realm rather than a natural law. Their purpose is to prevent Soul Beasts from producing God-rank experts; even a Soul Beast that somehow ascends is said to face execution in the God Realm. 278 389 396

Human Forms

High-level Soul Beasts can appear in human form under different circumstances.

• Rebuilding as a human — A 100,000-Year Soul Beast can become a human child and restart cultivation to evade Heavenly Tribulations. 395
• Ferocious Beast transformation — A Soul Beast that survives a Heavenly Tribulation while retaining its cultivation becomes a Ferocious Beast and can freely switch between beast and human forms. This does not make it human or free it from future tribulations. 273 278
• Granted human forms — Yun Chuan grants the Far North Beast Kings human forms without reducing their lifespans, increasing their cultivation speed. 407

Soul Rings and Soul Bones

Slaying a Soul Beast can produce a Soul Ring, which Soul Masters traditionally absorb to overcome cultivation bottlenecks and obtain Soul Skills. The resulting skill depends on both the Soul Master's Martial Soul and the attributes of the hunted Soul Beast. 178 296

• Higher-aged Soul Rings generally grant more powerful abilities; 100,000-Year Soul Rings are exceptionally rare and difficult to obtain. 98 252
• Absorption carries severe risks: an unsuitable attribute may yield an ineffective skill, while a ring beyond the user's endurance can cripple or kill them. 296

Soul Beast society is primarily shaped by survival, personal strength, bloodline, and access to cultivation resources. The strongest commonly command the deference of weaker beasts. 406

Story Role

Soul Beasts are central to the traditional Soul Master system because humans hunt them for Soul Rings and Soul Bones. This relationship makes high-level Soul Beasts both coveted resources and existential threats to Soul Masters. 178 252

Yun Chuan's actions repeatedly alter this balance. He hunts Soul Beasts for rare abilities, investigates methods of increasing Soul Ring age, and later proposes an alliance with Gu Yuena against the God Realm. 98 186 286

In the Far North, Yun Chuan subdues several Beast Kings, uses the White Jade Gourd's energy to help the Titan Snow Demon King reach 300,000 years, and grants the gathered Beast Kings human forms. 406 407
