Background / History

Shan Ting was a renowned Immortal Beast of the Demon Realm, known for discerning truth from falsehood and glimpsing the future. When he foresaw Lu Changsheng's arrival at the Demon God Hall, his deduction revealed a connection to the Heavenly Dao; fearing the consequences of opposition, Shan Ting decided that attaching himself to Lu Changsheng's fortune was the safest course. He subsequently identified Lu Changsheng as the Demon Lord. 288

After Lu Changsheng became Demon Lord, Shan Ting eagerly offered his services. He explained Demon Realm affairs, prepared a list of potential dissidents for elimination, and volunteered to protect Lu Changsheng during the expedition to the Nascent Soul Realm. Lu Changsheng rejected the proposed purge, but Shan Ting remained at his side. 302 303

In the Nascent Soul Realm, Shan Ting witnessed Lu Changsheng's overwhelming growth, including his 7,200-zhang Nascent Soul and the destruction of the Phenomenon Divine Palace. Completely convinced, he renamed himself Lu Shan Ting in declaration of loyalty. 304 312

Lu Changsheng later rewarded Shan Ting with thirty jin of Supreme Nascent Soul Liquid and guarded him while he tempered his Nascent Soul. Shan Ting reciprocated by identifying treasures, teaching Lu Changsheng basic divination, and resolving to write an autobiography celebrating his “big brother.” 315 316 338

Appearance

Shan Ting normally resembles a small elephant rather than a full-sized Ancient Divine Elephant, with an expressive trunk and elephant hooves. He can enlarge his body into a several-zhang-tall Divine Beast form suitable for carrying Lu Changsheng. 301 305 449

  • Initially appears as an immature, ordinary-looking little elephant without an Ancient Divine Elephant's imposing aura. 305
  • Uses his trunk for divination, often spinning it for prolonged periods. 316
  • After absorbing Buddha Light, his flesh becomes jade-like and holy, and he gains the dignified majesty of a Divine Beast. 443
  • At Immortal King Great Perfection, his enlarged body shines with layered divine light. 449

Personality

Shan Ting is intensely devoted to Lu Changsheng, whom he addresses as “Big Brother Changsheng” or “Changsheng Demon Lord.” His loyalty is rooted partly in his recognition of Lu Changsheng's extraordinary fortune, but it develops into genuine attachment: he follows him across realms, seeks treasures for him, and calls for his help in danger. 288 312 423 426

He is also exceedingly flattering. Shan Ting frequently attributes every impressive event to Lu Changsheng's greatness, praises his appearance without restraint, and readily declares himself Lu Changsheng's mount, sworn brother, or subordinate. 302 316 338 453

Despite his grand claims, Shan Ting is cautious and risk-averse. He repeatedly divines safe paths before advancing through dangerous territory and refuses to act as a scout unless he sees a benefit or receives assurance of safety. 343 407

Shan Ting copes with embarrassment by rewriting events in his personal records. After being humiliated or beaten, he records elaborate imaginary victories in which he effortlessly suppresses his opponents and mercifully spares them. 306 407
