Background / History
Departure and first crew
Ace set sail from Windmill Village at seventeen, pursuing the dream he once shared with Luffy and Sabo: conquering the Grand Line and becoming renowned across the world 105 108.
While searching for water in the East Blue, he encountered Nami and Hachi aboard the Orange Windmill. He invited them to sail with him, then defeated Hachi in a wagered duel without forcing either of them to join afterward. Ace also identified Hachi’s weak lower-body mobility and limited multitasking as the main flaws in his six-sword style, earning Hachi’s respect 106 108.
Spade Pirates and Whitebeard Pirates
A later account identifies Ace as the Spade Pirates’ captain. During that period, he gained notoriety by defeating pirate crews and Marine warships, defeating Vice Admiral Dalmatia, and fighting Shichibukai Jinbe for five days and nights. He refused a Shichibukai invitation, unsuccessfully challenged Whitebeard, and ultimately became the Whitebeard Pirates’ Second Division Captain 111.
Nami and Hachi joined his crew during the Spade Pirates era; both later followed him into the Whitebeard Pirates 111.
Debt to Baroque Works
While pursuing Blackbeard on Jaya, Ace confronted Teach over his betrayal of Whitebeard and the kidnapping of Nami. Though Ace injured Teach repeatedly, the Dark-Dark Fruit’s suction and ability-nullification allowed Teach to defeat him 167 171.
Xia Qiu intervened before Ace and Nami could be killed. Learning that Blackbeard intended to use him to draw Whitebeard into a World Government-backed trap, Ace agreed to serve Xia Qiu for four years. He imposed conditions that he would not kill indiscriminately or harm innocents, and that Whitebeard would be told who saved them 173.
Appearance
Ace is a freckled young man who commonly travels bare-chested and wears a distinctive orange cowboy hat. While serving Whitebeard, he bears the Whitebeard Pirates’ emblem on his back 105 165.
- Freckled face 105
- Orange cowboy hat 165
- Often bare-chested, even in Drum Kingdom’s cold climate 165
- Whitebeard Pirates’ emblem on his back 165
Personality
Ace is driven by ambition and personal recognition, openly declaring his intent to conquer the Grand Line and gain worldwide fame 108. He is confident in his own strength, but not careless: he evaluates opponents’ abilities, recognizes when he cannot win outright, and adapts his tactics accordingly 166 180.
His loyalty is central to his decisions. He hunts Blackbeard for betraying Whitebeard, risks himself to protect Nami and Baroque Works personnel, and accepts temporary subordination to Xia Qiu rather than endanger his father and companions 167 173 180. He also shows compassion toward those freed from Moria’s control and personally takes Heckle to find medical treatment 187 188.
Abilities & Skills
Flame-Flame Fruit
Ace is a Logia-type Devil Fruit user who generates, controls, and transforms into fire. His flames provide offense, flight, mobility, environmental control, and evasive elementalization 180 213.
- Fire Fist — Creates a massive flaming fist for direct attacks 180 213.
- Cross Fire — Fires a pillar of flame at a target 171 180.
- Fire Pillar — Produces a towering pillar of flame capable of shattering ice formations 180.
- Mirror Flame — Uses flame transformation to counter an incoming opponent 180.
- Great Flame Ring, Flame Emperor — Condenses an enormous fireball before releasing it as a large-scale attack 171 180.
- Flame Rain — Creates a crimson vortex in the sky and rains flames over a wide area 241.
- Battle Axe — Forms his leg into a gigantic flaming axe for a descending strike 213 224.
- Limits — Blackbeard can pull Ace in and nullify his elementalization through contact; Ace also restrains high-output attacks when allies are nearby 171 187. Seawater absorbs much of his flames’ heat, limiting his ability to counter Aokiji’s freezing power at sea 237.
Observation Haki
Ace deliberately chose Observation Haki because it complements his Logia body and Soru, allowing him to sense attacks early enough to evade or elementalize before being struck 195.
- Predicts opponents’ movements during his spar with Sabo 224.
- Uses Observation Haki and Geppo to prevent Kizaru from quickly overpowering him 213.
- Demonstrates future sight against Queen, anticipating her attack choices and exploiting them with flame decoys 247.
- Has not been shown mastering Armament Haki; he stated he had focused on developing his Devil Fruit instead 175.
Mobility and Hand-to-Hand Combat
Ace combines exceptional physical ability with Six Powers techniques and fire-based movement.
- Defeats Hachi’s six-sword style with bare hands, repeatedly interrupting his attacks before they can be completed 108.
- Uses Soru to disappear and reposition at high speed 195 224.
- Uses Geppo and flame transformation to fight in the air and over open water 213.
- Can propel a small boat using flames and escape at high speed 180 225.
Combat Analysis
Ace quickly identifies weaknesses in opponents and adjusts his approach during battle.
- Diagnoses Hachi’s weak legs, slow movement, and limited ability to control multiple simultaneous sword attacks 108.
- Understands the tactical danger of Blackbeard’s ability nullification while recognizing that Teach still takes damage from fire attacks 171.
- Uses dispersed flames as decoys to conceal his position from Queen 247.
Equipment
- Orange cowboy hat — Ace’s signature headwear 165.
- Small flame-powered boat — A compact vessel whose engine Ace can propel with his flames; used for escape and infiltration 180 225.
Relationships
- Nami — Former crewmate and close companion. Ace recruits her for her navigation skills, rescues her from Blackbeard’s captivity, and sends her with Hachi to warn Whitebeard and Jinbe 108 167 173 175.
- Hachi — Former subordinate and crewmate. Ace defeats and mentors him in the East Blue; Hachi later protects Nami and aids efforts to save Ace 108 167 202.
- Whitebeard — Ace’s former captain and father figure. Ace pursues Blackbeard for betraying him and remains concerned about protecting him from Teach’s scheme 167 173.
- Xia Qiu — Benefactor and temporary superior. Xia Qiu saves Ace from Blackbeard, after which Ace serves as Baroque Works’ Mr.1 for four years 173 175.
- Sabo — Childhood friend and sparring rival. They recall having fought hundreds of times in the past and test their growth in a later duel 223 224.
- Heckle — Baroque Works teammate. Ace helps him escape Aokiji, takes him to Hogback for treatment, and fights alongside him in later campaigns 181 187 247.
- Perona — Assigned as Ace’s partner after joining Baroque Works; Ace finds her ghost abilities troublesome and resolves to learn Haki quickly 188.
- Marco — Fellow Whitebeard commander who arrives to support Ace against Kizaru and reunites with him afterward 213.
- Marshall D. Teach / Blackbeard — Enemy and former Whitebeard Pirate whose betrayal, murder of crewmates, and abduction of Ace’s companions prompt Ace’s pursuit 167 171.
