History

Xia Qiu begins as an isolated fish in the East Blue during Marineford Calendar 1510. Driven by hunger and survival, he claims the waters near a small island, uses a shipwreck as shelter, and gradually realizes that he has entered the world of One Piece. His human soul gives him the intelligence to observe humans, assess threats, and deliberately direct his own evolution. 4 11

His early growth is shaped by repeated predation and underwater battles. He survives injuries from aggressive fish and Marine officers, discovers that feeding can repair his body, and learns that his fish form limits his combat options against agile enemies. His encounters with Arlong’s crew lead him to develop hooked tentacles, defeat Arlong, and eventually tame the Sea Beast Moo rather than consume him. 6 39 54 56

After evolving lungs, Xia Qiu expands beyond the East Blue and enters the Grand Line. His Conqueror’s Haki awakening changes his outlook: he no longer wants to quietly grow in isolation, but seeks to become a figure who influences history. 62 82 84

Xia Qiu’s first sustained human connection is with Nico Robin. Their communication begins through writing, and Robin teaches him history, politics, literature, Devil Fruits, and the world’s major powers. Appearance

Xia Qiu’s body changes drastically throughout his evolution, progressing from a meter-long fish into a massive, six-legged Giant Beast. By the time he develops dinosaur-like legs, he is approximately fifty-eight meters long and no longer resembles either an ordinary fish or crocodile. 4 109 140

Xia Qiu is intensely survival-oriented and pragmatic. He studies every injury, defeat, and biological change for ways to improve himself; after suffering damage to his eye, for example, he immediately identifies it as a weakness and plans to evolve protective eyelids. 39 87

He is highly intelligent, strategic, and distrustful. He plans ambushes around an enemy’s stamina and terrain, uses Baroque Works to acquire power, and deliberately keeps Vivi and Zala in mutual check rather than trusting either of them. 66 109 141 143

Despite his ruthlessness, Xia Qiu craves companionship. His long isolation makes Robin’s willingness to communicate deeply important to him, and Moo’s near-death provokes guilt, rage, and the first release of his Conqueror’s Haki. 79 100 His affection does not prevent manipulation: he initially agrees to protect Robin while concealing his plan to use her connection to Baroque Works. 109
