Background / History

Yao Yao is the daughter of Ji Sheng, the Night Watcher Sovereign, and the niece of Venerable Wu Dao. She survived the catastrophe that shattered the Night Watchers, believing for years that her father had died. General Feng had once been a promising Night Watcher whom Ji Sheng empowered, but he later betrayed the faction, massacred dissenters and Night Watchers, and helped replace humanity with ghost blood. Yao Yao holds him personally responsible for betraying both humanity and her father. 590

In the aftermath of the Primordial Era, she developed an enduring hatred for You Luo, whom she blames for the Night Watchers’ swift defeat. She vows to kill You Luo herself. 583 At some earlier point, she also guided four unnamed figures who later claimed that her instruction was foundational to their growth; they secretly protected Jiang Dao from the Human-Faced Ghost Mantis after he entered the Divine Spirit realm. 541

Yao Yao joins Chu Rukuang and Jiang Dao in investigating the Divine Court Ancestral Land. At its altar, she discovers that the apparent Night Watcher Sovereign is only an illusion and later identifies the afflicted Emperor Asura Physique sealed in a bronze coffin as her uncle, Wu Dao. Her attempt to reach him with the silver necklace he gave her confirms that he still recognizes her, though he can no longer control himself. 588

After learning of the Fire Lotus, she regains her focus despite despair over her ruined family and resolves to continue forward. 589 She helps plan the infiltration of the Heavenly Dao Holy Gate by having Jiang Dao impersonate General Feng while she conceals herself on his body. 590 594

Inside the Heavenly Dao Holy Gate, Yao Yao reunites with her elder brother, Tuo Yun, only to learn that he has become an undying being. Torn between Night Watcher doctrine and familial loyalty, she agrees to help him obtain the Nine Dragon Demon Heart Grass; Tuo Yun later betrays her and strikes her from behind. 596 597

She and Jiang Dao subsequently obtain and seal the Fire Lotus, escape pursuit by the Violet Lightning God-Emperor, and fight through the Upper Realm together. 601 604 After temporarily separating to seek reinforcements, Yao Yao is trapped for more than ten days in You Luo’s Blood Moon world. Despite her composure in battle, Yao Yao is deeply affected by her family’s losses.
