Background / History
Friendship with Namikaze Mirai
Orochimaru and Namikaze Mirai developed a close friendship during the Third Great Ninja War through their shared enthusiasm for science. Orochimaru initially considered taking Mirai as his disciple, partly paralleling Jiraiya’s mentorship of Minato, but abandoned the idea after witnessing Mirai’s wartime achievements. Despite being one of the Sannin, he felt overshadowed by the younger ninja 94.
After Minato’s death and Mirai’s disappearance, Orochimaru became disheartened and devoted himself to immortality research. The exposure of a human experiment forced him to leave Konoha, where Sarutobi Hiruzen designated him an S-rank rogue ninja 94.
He subsequently joined Akatsuki and fought its leader, Pain. His crushing defeat left him deeply wary of the Rinnegan’s power 95 96.
Return to Konoha
Two and a half years after their separation, Mirai detected Orochimaru watching Konoha from outside the village. Now the Fifth Hokage, Mirai invited him back and promised protection. Orochimaru was moved by the offer but remained concerned about his wanted status 94.
Mirai showed him Konoha’s educational reforms and the Umbrella Research Center built on the former Root site. To remove the obstacle of Orochimaru’s past, Mirai proposed publicly blaming Danzo for framing him. This was a deliberate rehabilitation campaign—not proof that Orochimaru’s human experiments had never occurred 94 95.
The campaign succeeded. Villagers welcomed Orochimaru as a wronged hero, and he adopted a polite, approachable manner at Mirai’s direction. He decided to stay, reunited with Tsunade, and took charge of Umbrella’s research. Akatsuki responded by declaring him a traitor and ordering its members to kill him on sight 97 98.
Scientific and Political Leadership
Within half a month of his return, Orochimaru’s research center produced an improved wound-healing medicine. He later investigated captured Pain bodies, learned Mirai’s explanation of Biological Magnetic Fields, and became involved in Konoha’s technological weapons program 98 111 119 134.
His responsibilities expanded beyond the laboratory. As Mirai’s secretary, he held authority second only to the Hokage and helped oversee the Republic of Fire’s urban reforms. He also repurposed his existing arrangements in the Land of Rice Fields to establish the Hidden Sound Village and organize the overthrow of its daimyo 142 144.
Sasori’s recruitment brought his former Akatsuki partner into Konoha’s research program. Their opposing views on biological and mechanical advancement remained intact, but Mirai made them colleagues in Gundam development 160.
Fourth Great Ninja War
Orochimaru commanded Konoha’s technologically equipped forces against the Ten-Tails, coordinating an encirclement and artillery barrage. The beast’s preparation of a Tailed Beast Bomb exposed the limits of those tactics and prompted an urgent defensive response 218.
During the confrontation with Six Paths Madara, Orochimaru shielded a Konoha ninja and lost his right arm. He then restrained Madara’s leg with poisonous snakes. Although Madara immediately cut them apart and knocked Orochimaru away, the brief delay allowed Mirai to intervene 226.
Otsutsuki Research
As Mirai fought in the Pure Land, Orochimaru used televised statements to prevent worldwide panic. Privately, he worried about Mirai’s survival while beginning research on the captive Kaguya 235 236.
Mirai’s return supplied further material: the sealed souls of the Sage of Six Paths and Otsutsuki Hamura. Orochimaru’s studies revealed that Otsutsuki souls possess substantial power and suggested a close connection between their souls and varied Dojutsu 236 237.
The research program subsequently acquired Isshiki reincarnated into a boar, Hidan and the captured Jashin, and the defeated Momoshiki. Orochimaru pursued these subjects both to uncover immortality and to develop methods of fighting the Otsutsuki 242 244 253.
Body Replacement and the Urashiki Pursuit
Orochimaru’s body-replacement project began with Mitsuki, a clone designed around Magnetic Field and Sage Mode attributes. Although originally intended to be male, the clone developed into a female body. After incorporating Otsutsuki power, Orochimaru transferred into the new body so he could fight alongside Mirai rather than remain solely a researcher 244 245.
Their test battle demonstrated his new Rinnegan and Sage Mode abilities, but also confirmed that he remained far below Mirai. The unfamiliar Otsutsuki aura alarmed Kaguya and drew Minato and other Konoha ninja to the scene, where Mirai had to explain Orochimaru’s identity 245 246.
Information about Urashiki’s time-related Rinnegan renewed Orochimaru’s hopes of approaching immortality. He helped coordinate the response through the Heavenly Eye Network and explained Konoha’s counter-Otsutsuki program to the visiting adult Sasuke 254 255 256.
When Mirai pursued Urashiki into a time tunnel and remained absent for three days, Orochimaru prepared to accompany Sasuke in searching for him. Mirai returned before they departed, bringing the time-travel tool Plow to the research center 260.
Appearance
- Original body: Bloodless, pallid face; pale, slender fingers; pale-gold vertical pupils; and a distinctive hoarse voice 94.
- Clothing: Wears a hooded black robe while concealing his identity outside Konoha, and a white laboratory coat during research 94 119.
- Later demeanor: Gradually loses his cold, sinister bearing and develops a gentler appearance after returning to Konoha 182.
- Replacement body: Resembles a feminized version of his former appearance, with roughly seventy to eighty percent facial similarity and long black hair. Adult Sasuke describes him as looking like a young girl 245 255.
- Combat transformations: His eyes display purple Rinnegan ripples; Sage Mode produces white forehead horns and a coiling snake of green Chakra 245.
Personality
Orochimaru is a proud, intensely curious scientist whose enduring ambition is immortality. New biological mechanisms, unusual bodies, and powerful Dojutsu can absorb his attention completely. His early research leaves magnetic fields largely unexplored, but learning their connection to cellular activity immediately inspires numerous experimental ideas 94 119 254.
Returning to Konoha changes his public behavior and strengthens his attachment to others. His initial friendliness is partly coached by Mirai, but later scenes show sincere enjoyment of the Sannin’s reunion and willingness to leave the laboratory for Jiraiya’s hosting debut. He openly rejects the idea that others should judge him solely by his past 97 179 182.
His warmer manner does not eliminate his cruelty toward research subjects. He enthusiastically studies captive Otsutsuki bodies and souls, treats Momoshiki like a newly acquired toy, and seeks ways to weaponize Hidan’s damage-transfer technique. For Orochimaru, scientific advancement and the defense of the Ninja World coexist with ruthless experimentation 237 244 253.
His respect for Mirai also tempers his pride. After observing the Hokage’s achievements, he becomes content to support him from the shadows rather than compete for leadership. Mirai’s prolonged absences nevertheless leave him visibly anxious 142 236 260.
