Background / History
Earlier Political Activities
During Minato’s tenure as Hokage, Namikaze Mirai repeatedly used his influence to suppress Danzo. Danzo welcomed Mirai’s disappearance, believing that Minato would lose an important source of support 3.
Danzo and Root had previously manipulated public opinion to drive Hatake Sakumo to his death. During the Nine-Tails Attack, Danzo also prevented the Uchiha from providing reinforcements—an action he later defended as necessary to contain the clan 17 20.
Failed Assassination and Loss of Office
After Mirai returned, Danzo interpreted his visit to the Uchiha compound as evidence of a possible conspiracy, despite admitting that he did not know what they were planning. He arranged Mirai’s assassination against Hiruzen’s objections and intended to have Root researchers dissect the body to investigate his unusual Magnet Release 13 16.
Mirai annihilated the ten-man assassination squad: five Jonin and five Special Jonin skilled in sealing techniques. Danzo then accused him of murdering fellow villagers, while privately regretting that he had arrived without Hiruzen’s protection 16 17.
Hiruzen stripped Danzo of his Shadow Advisor position. Mirai destroyed Danzo’s left eye in retaliation for obstructing Uchiha reinforcements during the Nine-Tails Attack 17.
The eye could not be treated and required removal. With his right Sharingan covered by bandages, Danzo was temporarily unable to see; Root subsequently found a compatible civilian donor for a replacement eye 18.
Rumor Campaign and Political Pressure
Danzo next tried to undermine Mirai through a paid rumor campaign involving Naruto. The Uchiha Police Force detained participants, who confessed how Root had recruited them, paid them, and supplied their lines. The campaign escalated into demands to expel Naruto, alarming Danzo because he regarded the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki as an indispensable military asset 20 21 22.
During the dispute over the slain Kumogakure envoys, Danzo worked with Hiruzen to place responsibility on Mirai. Hyuga Hiashi disrupted their effort by explaining that the envoys had kidnapped Hinata and that Mirai had killed them to rescue her 35 36.
A further assassination attempt relied on Aburame Ryoma’s Nano-Poisonous Insects. Ryoma’s death instead allowed Mirai’s Magnetic Fluid Clone to enter Root’s base concealed inside his corpse 40.
Secret Research Exposed
Mirai’s infiltrating clone discovered numerous stored Sharingan, Uchiha tissues, and exceptionally vigorous flesh identified as Hashirama’s tissue. Mirai and Uchiha Setsuna then spread rumors linking Danzo’s research to the Nine-Tails Attack, making him a public scapegoat while attempting to draw out its actual mastermind 41 43.
Danzo had also continued Wood Release experiments after Hiruzen ordered them stopped for consuming resources without results. The discovery of Yamato after Root’s destruction revealed that this secret research had produced a Wood Release user 58.
Naruto’s Abduction and Death
Danzo offered to overlook the Uchiha dispute if Shisui brought Naruto to him. After Shisui refused, Danzo sent Kan and Wen, Root’s best infiltrators, through a weakness discovered during years of surveillance of the Uchiha compound 50 51.
His plan was to use Naruto as leverage against Mirai and bring the Jinchuriki under his control. Silver Fluid protecting Naruto repeatedly killed his captors, but Danzo continued toward Root’s base while ordering other operatives to delay Mirai 52 53 54.
Mirai destroyed the base and rescued Naruto. Enraged at the loss of his life’s work, Danzo attempted to kill Naruto and was beheaded. He revived through Izanagi and summoned Baku, but neither measure stopped Mirai 56.
Danzo repeatedly revived, fled, and was killed again. On his final revival, he begged Hiruzen to save him. Once the Sharingan implanted in his arm were exposed, Hiruzen stepped aside, and Mirai killed him permanently 57.
Posthumous Fate
Root’s destruction caused fatalities exceeding seventy percent and left rebuilding nearly impossible. The Shimura Clan recovered only scraps of Danzo’s flesh and hair, burying them with his clothing. The Uchiha celebrated his death for three days and nights 58 59.
The former Root facilities were later repurposed for Mirai’s research enterprise. When Orochimaru returned to Konoha, villagers were told that Danzo had wrongly accused him; the resulting backlash further damaged the already weakened Shimura Clan 90 96.
In the Pure Land, Danzo joined spirits attacking Mirai and fired a Vacuum Great Sphere at him. Later, Orochimaru’s account of Mirai’s rise—including unifying the Ninja World and defeating Kaguya—left Danzo stunned 234 237.
Danzo was subsequently summoned through Impure World Reincarnation and placed inside a Gundam’s energy chamber. His chakra was repeatedly extracted and converted into energy, causing intense pain and humiliation. Mirai retained him as a template for further experiments despite dissatisfaction with the initial output 238.
Appearance
- Aged, scarred face: Described as sinister and intimidating, particularly when angry 3 21.
- Bandaged right eye: Conceals a transplanted three-tomoe Sharingan 17.
- Bandaged right arm: Hides additional implanted Sharingan used for Izanagi 50 57.
- Cane: Carries and leans on a walking cane, sometimes striking it against the ground in anger 21 50 53.
- Heavy facial bandaging after injury: Following the destruction of his left eye, bandages covered his face from the bridge of his nose upward 18.
Personality
Danzo treats the Uchiha as inherently dangerous. His suspicion of Mirai’s visit to their compound arises from instinctive hostility rather than evidence, and he invokes the Second Hokage’s teachings to justify that prejudice 13.
He habitually presents attacks on his opponents as acts of village protection. After sending assassins against Mirai, he condemns Mirai for killing them; during the Kumogakure dispute, he again attempts to portray Mirai as disloyal to Konoha 17 36.
His confidence repeatedly collapses into anger when plans fail. He considers Hiruzen weak for hesitating, berates subordinates as useless when they cannot overcome Naruto’s protection, and continues the abduction despite mounting casualties 40 50 53 54.
Although Root is his cherished life’s work, its destruction drives him to attack the very Jinchuriki he intended to control. When facing permanent death, political defiance gives way to desperate appeals for Hiruzen’s protection 56 57.

Danzo creates four Shadow Clones and sends them fleeing in different directions alongside his real body 57.
- Intended to confuse pursuers and enable escape 57.
- Ineffective against Mirai, who immediately identifies and shoots the real body 57.
