Background / History
Marineford served as the iconic Marine Headquarters and a bastion of justice that famously had never fallen in eight hundred years 158. During the height of the conflict against Roa and the Pirate Alliance, the fortress was left primarily defended by Fleet Admiral Kong while the main Marine force was deployed to the New World 159.
When the World Government and Marines attempted to cover up their battlefield losses by fabricating a grand victory, an enraged Roa and his alliance retaliated by launching a direct, unannounced assault on Marineford 157 158. Fleet Admiral Kong was killed during the battle by Roa's Miniature Solar Flare 159. Following the defeat, the Golden Lion utilized his floating powers to lift Marineford from the sea and slam it into the Gate of Justice, completely reducing the island fortress and its surrounding structures to rubble 160 230.
After its destruction, the former G-1 base was later repurposed and designated as the new Marine Headquarters, often referred to as New Marineford 166 215.
