Nature and Bond

Zanpakuto are part of a Soul Reaper's soul rather than ordinary weapons. Their forms, personalities, and powers differ from wielder to wielder, reflecting the Soul Reaper's truest self. A Zanpakuto and its wielder are normally mutually dependent: the Zanpakuto is born from its wielder's soul, while a Soul Reaper cannot fully function without one. 4 590

A Zanpakuto normally reverts to an Asauchi after its wielder dies. Repeated Shikai releases can leave residual soul energy in that Asauchi, and a Zanpakuto that has reached Shikai develops an independent consciousness aligned with its wielder's personality. 123

Release Mechanics

• A Zanpakuto's release strengthens its wielder's Reiatsu in addition to granting its unique ability. 4 108
• Shikai abilities vary radically, including direct combat transformations, environmental control, hypnosis, healing, and status reversal. 130 344 445
• Reiatsu remains decisive in Zanpakuto combat. A sufficiently large gap can allow a stronger opponent to resist, suppress, or invalidate an otherwise dangerous ability. 108 130
• Bankai can be stolen and used by Quincy Sternritter, making its release dangerous against them. 1107
• Paired Zanpakuto are rare. Differently shaped paired blades may indicate that their wielder possesses two distinct personalities. 369

Materialization

Independent Embodiment

Under special circumstances, Zanpakuto can materialize into humanoid entities capable of wielding their own powers. Their Reiatsu is equivalent to that of their wielders, and they possess intimate knowledge of their masters' abilities, habits, and weaknesses. 590 597 604

• Zanpakuto capable of materializing are generally at least Shikai-level. 593
• A materialized Zanpakuto defeated in battle can revert to weapon form; in one case, the reverted blade was broken in half. 593
• Materialized Zanpakuto may retain independent motives rather than simply obeying the force that summoned them. 597
• A Soul Reaper separated from their materialized Zanpakuto is heavily disadvantaged, as they lose access to its full released power while facing an opponent that knows them completely. 602

Perfect Unity

A Soul Reaper and Zanpakuto may fight together when their minds and spirits achieve perfect unity. This is rare, but it can greatly amplify the Zanpakuto's power. Byakuya Kuchiki and Senbonzakura's unity doubled the number, speed, and strength of Senbonzakura's petals. 605

Zanpakuto Materialization Incident

Muramasa triggered a widespread Zanpakuto rebellion by implanting suggestions into Zanpakuto instincts and magnifying their dissatisfaction with their wielders. The resulting materializations attacked Soul Reapers throughout Seireitei. 596 597

Muramasa could awaken and influence Zanpakuto, but could not directly control their actions. Some materialized solely from resentment toward their wielders, while others acted according to personal desires unrelated to Muramasa's wider rebellion. 597

After the incident, several Zanpakuto whose masters had died became unstable. Overwhelmed by remorse and obsession after realizing they had killed their own wielders, they degenerated into monsters called Blade Beasts. 615

Notable Zanpakuto
