Background / History

Rukia was abandoned as an infant by her older sister, Hisana, who could not care for her under the conditions of Rukongai. She survived in Inuzuri, District 78 of South Rukongai, where poor security and harsh living conditions made survival difficult even for adults. 113 114

After befriending Abarai Renji and other orphans, Rukia became their leader through her intelligence and quick wit. The group survived through petty theft, with much of what they took distributed to uncared-for children and elderly residents. 113

Yoru Machi and Kotetsu Kiyone encountered Rukia's group while recruiting spiritually talented residents for the Shino Academy. Rukia initially believed the Shinigami had come to punish them and tried to hold Kiyone off so her friends could escape, but Yoru instead offered the group a path into the Academy and Gotei 13. 113 114

Yoru later told Rukia that Hisana was her sister and brought her to the Kuchiki estate for their first meeting. Though initially wary, Rukia chose to hear Hisana's explanation and gradually accepted their reunion. 115 116

Kuchiki Byakuya publicly adopted her as his sister, granting her the Kuchiki surname. Rukia nevertheless declined to remain at the estate, determined to become an accomplished Shinigami through her own ability. 117

After graduating early, Rukia chose the Thirteenth Division rather than the Sixth Division to avoid accusations that her noble status had secured her position. Shiba Kaien took personal responsibility for mentoring her. 139 140

Personality

She is independent and proud, refusing to rely on Hisana's status or stay at the Kuchiki residence. Her decision to enter the Thirteenth Division was driven by a desire to prove that she had earned her place without noble favoritism. 117 139
