Background / History

Origins and fractured soul

Yoru Machi was born a Saiyan and sent as an infant to Planet Naria. Liliana, a Narian whose precognition showed him destroying the planet, chose to raise him instead of killing him. She hid with him in the mountains for over a decade to protect him from Narians who feared his Saiyan heritage. As he grew stronger, he refused revenge and ended Naria’s internal conflict through kindness, becoming a hero to its people. 387

A later revelation explains the basis of his cross-world existence: a collision with the Kōtsu in the Dangai split his Spirit Body across countless worlds. The separated selves can share memories and abilities, but the fracture initially left his soul incomplete and prevented him from achieving Bankai. 91 1096

Soul Society service

Yoru Machi joined the Thirteenth Division “by accident,” despite originally wanting to enter the Fourth Division because of his aptitude for healing Kidō. Even as a Fifth Seat, his healing ability alone was considered sufficient for a seated officer post in the Fourth Division. 95

He repeatedly avoided advancement and responsibility. Ukitake Jūshirō offered to recommend him as a vice-captain in another division, but Yoru Machi declined; he also sought the unpopular assignment of being stationed in the Human World because it suited his own plans. 10 97
