Background / History

Anju was originally Li Anju, a recent college graduate from another world who made videos and multimedia content under the handle “Anju.” After being struck on the head while taking out the trash, he awakened during the Nine-Tails sealing incident as the consciousness inhabiting Kurama's Yin clone. Unable to return to human form, he appeared as a small grayish-orange fox and claimed the identity of the Yin Nine-Tails. 2 1

Using knowledge of the future, Anju persuaded Kurama and Minato to alter the original sealing arrangement: Naruto received Kurama, while Kushina received Anju and part of Minato's Chakra. The change saved Kushina's life, but left Anju sealed inside her Sealing Space alongside Minato's Chakra Body. 1 2

Minato later sealed Anju's consciousness during a dispute, causing the vacant Yin Nine-Tails Chakra Body to generate a new consciousness. Anju became trapped competing with it until Kurama located him and consumed the newly formed consciousness, restoring Anju to Kushina's Sealing Space. 20 23

As Kushina's sealed Tailed Beast, Anju advised her on political decisions, missions, alliances, and Ninjutsu research. Their relationship repeatedly deteriorated when Kushina treated his Chakra as a weapon or sealed him against his will, though they continued to rely on each other during conflicts with Akatsuki, Iwagakure, and other threats. 126 134 197

After escaping Kushina's seal and gaining a stable human form, Anju became publicly involved in Konoha's affairs. He served as an Advisor and Director at the Joint Research Institute, shared the Person in the Painting Ninjutsu for long-distance transportation research, and advocated unifying the ninja world's technology against the Ōtsutsuki threat. 323 325 338

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's attempt to absorb both halves of the Nine-Tails separated Anju from his Tailed Beast identity. Although the reconstructed Nine-Tails inherited his memories, Anju remained an independent, bodiless spirit. With assistance from Kurama and Kurama Sage, he developed the Spirit cultivation system and resumed acting in the physical world through Painted Skin. 386 391 396

He resents being treated as a mere source of Chakra. Kushina's repeated seals and demands for his power damaged his trust in her, leading him to refuse cooperation even when her safety was at stake.
