Background / History

The Sanqing originate from the division of Pangu’s Primordial Spirit. A peculiar soul absorbed by Pangu merges with Taiqing’s portion, giving the eldest brother memories of another life. Pangu entrusts him with protecting his younger brothers and preserving the Great Desolation. Taiqing emerges before Yuqing and Shangqing, who remain within their protective formation on Kunlun Mountain 1 3.

Before leaving Kunlun, Taiqing receives the Chaos Bell and Pangu Banner from his unborn brothers for protection. The Heavenly Dao subsequently sends Hongjun to steal the Sanqing’s companion treasures. Yuqing and Shangqing disguise themselves as unintelligent wisps of clear qi, while their Merit of World Creation frustrates Hongjun’s intrusion. His attempt ends in severe injury, and the resulting Great Dao Thunder also wounds the Heavenly Dao 3 4 5.

Taiqing returns with Pangu Marrow and shares both his travels and his knowledge of their enemies. Yuqing and Shangqing refine the marrow and emerge, declaring that the brothers will advance and retreat together. Taiqing extends that commitment to the Twelve Ancestral Witches, whose shared Pangu ancestry he treats as the basis for a united family rather than a rivalry over legitimacy 25 26 27.

Their first visit to Pangu Hall encounters suspicion, particularly because Houtu is still being nurtured inside. The Sanqing reveal their Heaven-Opening Marks and swear Great Dao Vows against misconduct, gaining entry. Taiqing also deliberately seeks a leading role among Pangu’s descendants, believing coordinated leadership necessary to overturn the fate arranged by Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao 31 32.

Appearance

  • Before emergence: Yuqing and Shangqing exist as wisps of clear qi and can conceal their spiritual intelligence within that form 4.
  • Yuqing Yuanshi: A dignified Daoist with a face compared to an ancient moon reflected in a cold pool. A white tuft between his brows swirls like a Taiji diagram, while wind and thunder surge at his brow tips 27.
  • Shangqing Lingbao: A youthful, green-robed Daoist with willow-leaf brows and star-reflecting eyes. His left pupil contains Sun Essence and his right Moon Radiance 27.
  • Combined Taichu: The brothers’ faces can appear upon Taichu, revealing the identities within their fused form 432.
  • Characteristic manifestations: Taiqing’s black-and-yellow radiance, Yuqing’s Heaven-Opening Axe Intent, and Shangqing’s Immortal Slaying Sword Intent intertwine above Kunlun Mountain 898 915.

Personality

Brotherhood is the Sanqing’s governing principle. Yuqing and Shangqing willingly lend Taiqing their supreme treasures before they can accompany him, celebrate his breakthroughs, and support his decisions without jealousy. Taiqing repeatedly warns that internal disputes would serve their enemies’ interests, while all three explicitly reject any future division of their bond 3 25 27 114.

Their loyalty does not exclude ambition or calculation. Taiqing uses foreknowledge, concealed identities, and carefully cultivated alliances to undermine the Heavenly Dao’s plans. He openly recognizes that protecting the family requires securing authority among the Ancestral Witches, not merely declaring common ancestry. The brothers conceal their strength until revealing it offers a tactical advantage 32 88 527 859.

Yuqing is initially described as steady-tempered, but readily becomes angry over threats to his brothers. He lacks the prejudice toward other races that Taiqing remembers from the original course of events. Shangqing is more openly exuberant and playful, laughing over their enemies’ setbacks and teasing Yuqing when the Immortal Slaying Array Diagram unexpectedly answers his wish 25 26 117 289.

Their generosity is concrete: they distribute captured treasures to the Ancestral Witches, provide equipment for allied lineages, and later teach divine abilities and cultivation methods without reservation. Their disciples likewise maintain close ties across the three branches rather than reproducing the sectarian hostility anticipated by the Heavenly Dao 117 336 639 688.

Abilities & Skills

One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones

An innate divine ability developed through the exchange of portions of the brothers’ origins 1 28.

  • Each brother produces three incarnations, giving the Sanqing nine incarnations collectively 28.
  • The initial incarnations match their creator’s cultivation and strength: Taiqing’s are Early-stage Hunyuan Golden Immortals, while Yuqing’s and Shangqing’s are Peak Zenith Heaven Golden Immortals 28.
  • Incarnations remain connected to their creators in mind and intent 447.
  • They can become barely perceptible azure qi and merge into Chaos Qi; three escape Hongjun and “Luohu’s” notice during the brothers’ diversion 447.
  • The ability is kept secret for much of the story. Shichen discovers that all three possess it when their incarnations enter Chaos 661.

Fusion into Taichu

The Sanqing combine into Taichu, concentrating their cultivation, Heaven-Opening Intent, and treasures into a single combatant 438 527 859.

  • Fusion enables them to confront opponents stronger than Taiqing individually 527.
  • Taichu coordinates several supreme treasures at once, combining suppression, time-space restraint, sword attacks, and vitality manipulation 527.
  • His physical body withstands close combat against Haotian’s Top-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure sword 557.
  • Taishi Daoist is also identified as an incarnation formed from the Sanqing’s fusion 678.

Joint Pangu Formation

With the Twelve Ancestral Witches, the brothers use a practiced returning-to-origin formation to summon the Pangu True Body 578 582.

  • The siblings have rehearsed the formation repeatedly in Pangu Hall and can assemble it instantly 578.
  • Their summoned Pangu True Body overwhelms the Heavenly Dao and exceeds the combined strength attributed to the Hunyuan Celestial Venerable Alliance 582 609.
  • The combined structure is not unrestricted: during the ascension trial, Great Dao Laws prevent the full fifteen-member fusion 855.
  • They adapt by separately summoning a phantom Pangu True Body and Taichu Daoist, which fight in coordination 855 859.

Pangu Inheritance and Merit of World Creation

Their ancestry grants Heaven-Opening Marks, powerful Primordial Spirits, profound destiny, and Merit of World Creation 3 32 413.

  • Heaven-Opening Marks prove their descent from Pangu 32.
  • Activated Heaven-Opening Intent begins splitting Chaos into a new world and amplifies their three World-Opening Supreme Treasures 527.
  • Their protective merit invokes Great Dao Thunder against Hongjun’s interference 4.
  • The Heavenly Dao abandons Heavenly Punishment when it realizes the brothers intend to exploit that merit’s protection against it 565.

Formations and World Stabilization

The Sanqing use formations for combat, concealment, spiritual-energy conversion, and the structural reinforcement of the Great Desolation 277 434 724.

  • Shangqing comprehends and teaches the Myriad Demons Great Formation to Xuanqing 274.
  • Innate Five Virtues Returning to Origin Formation: Planned around the five Innate Five Directions Banners to control the five directional worlds 434.
  • Great Desolation Four Extremes Great Array: Stabilizes continents, oceans, and space; strengthens the world barrier and improves the spiritual-energy cycle 492 724.
  • Array disks allow large formations to be deployed through distributed components concealed in the void 561.
  • Together with the Ancestral Witches, they use heavenly-secret deduction to investigate calamity qi, though the Mountain and Sea Realm’s origin and protective barrier obstruct their search 750.

Artifact Refining

Yuqing’s refining skill supplies both Daoism and allied factions with powerful equipment 336.

  • Refines Top-grade Houtian Spiritual Treasures from materials left over from constructing the Underworld 336.
  • Some creations possess power comparable to Top-grade Innate Spiritual Treasures 336.
  • Strengthens the Chaos Star Bead with Great Dao Merit, bringing it closer to Innate Supreme Treasure status 550.
  • The brothers identify that spiritual treasures can advance by fulfilling functions within their authority, drawing on the Evasion Shuttle and Five Directions Banners as evidence 529.

Strategy and Temporal Resistance

Taiqing’s foreknowledge allows the family to act before Hongjun’s intended arrangements take effect 26 88.

  • Xuanqing’s concealed connection to Taiqing lets him infiltrate Di Jun and Tai Yi’s future Heavenly Court 69 88.
  • The Sanqing and Ancestral Witches promote the Immortal-Demon Calamity as a substitute for the Witch-Demon Calamity, keeping the Witch Race out of the intended conflict 334.
  • Their actions preserve reincarnated Chaos Demon Gods who would otherwise fall to Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao’s schemes 563.
  • The Sanqing are unaffected by the Time Long River, a fact Luohu does not know when planning against their incarnations 660.
  • Even Shichen, despite observing countless timelines, cannot see through the full depths of Pangu’s descendants 648.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Taiji Diagram — Taiqing’s companion World-Opening Supreme Treasure; suppresses Yin Yang, the Five Elements, and earth, wind, water, and fire 1 26 527.
  • Pangu Banner — One of the Sanqing’s original companion treasures; releases immense Chaos Sword Qi 3 26 527.
  • Chaos Bell — Original companion treasure of the Sanqing, rather than a treasure destined for Donghuang Taiyi; freezes an opponent’s time and space 26 527.
  • Heaven and Earth Profound Yellow Exquisite Pagoda — Appears with Taiqing at his emergence and remains part of their formidable treasure collection 1 508.
  • Immortal Slaying Sword Formation — The brothers obtain all Four Swords of Zhu Xian during the Dao-Demon conflict. Its missing array diagram subsequently flies to Shangqing, completing his acquisition 114 115 117.
  • God-Slaying Spear — Captured from the conflict’s spoils and retained by Taiqing for its ability to restrain a Heavenly Dao Saint’s Primordial Spirit 108 115 117.
  • Heart of Life — Strengthens Taichu while draining opponents’ vitality; used against Hongjun, Haotian, and Yaochi 527 550.
  • Primordial Gourd / Hongmeng Gourd — Used to seize or contain hostile treasures, including the Seal Immortal Absolute Seal and Thunder God Pool 527 565.
  • Innate Five Directions Banners — Formation cores gathered for the Five Elements project; subsequently receive Great Dao Merit and advance in grade 434 507 529.
  • Primordial Sky Measuring Ruler — Receives merit from the Five Elements Great World and advances in grade 529.
  • Chaos Star Bead — Merit-enhanced treasure used against Haotian; its conversion into an Innate Supreme Treasure would require an enormous further investment 550.
  • Pangu Marrow — Taiqing distributes it to strengthen his brothers’ origins and intends the remaining portions for the Twelve Ancestral Witches 26 28.
  • Jade Tokens and teleportation arrays — Maintain communication and travel between Kunlun Mountain and Pangu Hall 150 159.

Relationships

  • Pangu — Father and source of their Primordial Spirits. His inheritance and instructions provide the foundation for their commitment to protect the world and unite his descendants 1 25 27.
  • Twelve Ancestral Witches — Siblings through Pangu’s essence-blood lineage. Initial mistrust becomes a close familial and military alliance, including joint world-building and Pangu True Body fusion 32 150 578 724.
  • Xuanqing — Taiqing’s concealed avatar, used to infiltrate the Demon Race’s Heavenly Court and cultivate outside alliances. Their hidden connection is central to the brothers’ long-term strategy 69 88 508.
  • Hongjun — Long-standing enemy who attempts to steal their treasures, force them onto the Three Corpses path, and control their future. The brothers repeatedly expose and counter his arrangements 4 527 562 565.
  • Heavenly Dao — Principal opponent; seeks their merit, treasures, and submission, and repeatedly tries to divide them from the Ancestral Witches 3 437 438 595.
  • Ancestor Reincarnation, Yang Mei, and World Daoist — Powerful allies whose ties to Xuanqing connect them to the Sanqing. They acknowledge tangible benefits from the brothers’ schemes 562 563.
  • Old Ancestor Wuxing — Initially pursues Taiqing, later benefits from the Five Elements Great World. He comes to recognize how deeply the Sanqing’s alliances and causality constrain opposition to them 25 529 568.
  • Nuwa and Fuxi — Close associates; the Sanqing protect Nuwa’s enlightenment and gather with them around the creation of humanity 567 576.
  • Di Jun and Tai Yi — Targets of Xuanqing’s covert influence. Xuanqing gains their trust, assists formation research, and helps arrange Di Jun’s later ascension through the Demon Sect 211 274 393.

Disciples and Lineages

  • Taiqing’s lineage — Includes Six-Eared Macaque, Kong Xuan, Golden Winged Great Peng Bird, Taixu, Xuandu, and Donghua. Donghua becomes Taiqing’s first direct disciple to attain Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal 268 295 688 720 807.
