Background / History

The Heavenly Dao is one of the three equal-status Daos of the Great Desolation, alongside the Earthly Dao and Human Dao, each governing different authorities. It seeks exclusive control over the world and suppresses the cultivation of Laws to prevent the emergence of Hunyuan Celestial Venerables, whose control over their own worlds would diminish its authority. 129 160

Unlike the Earthly and Human Daos as initially described by Taiqing, the Heavenly Dao developed self-awareness. Its earlier awakening gave it a substantial advantage in authority, making cooperation between the other two Daos necessary to resist its dominance. 129

Before the Sanqing's birth, it instructed Hongjun through the largest fragment of the Jade of Creation to seize their Companion Treasures. Hongjun's use of Heavenly Dao Power against the Merit of World Creation protecting Yuqing and Shangqing provoked a severe backlash, after which the Heavenly Dao ceased responding to him. 4

During the early history of the Great Desolation, the Heavenly Dao designed the intended decline of the Dragon, Phoenix, and Qilin Clans. Their survival and acquisition of Heaven-and-Earth authority altered its plans, cost it a portion of its authority, and contributed to the Great Dao Thunder that forced it into slumber. 16 38

Before its full awakening, it annexed the Demonic Path after Luohu's defeat and used it to encroach upon the Earthly Dao's authority. It also relied on Hongjun, its Dao Integrator, and repeatedly sought to prevent the awakening and strengthening of the Earthly and Human Daos. 236 246

The Heavenly Dao's will entered the Jade of Creation within its origin space. When it awakened after a long slumber, it manifested a transparent Dao Body composed entirely of laws and rules, then discovered that seventeen Hunyuan Celestial Venerables, the established Underworld, and Pangu's descendants had greatly altered the Great Desolation during its absence. 274 278

Following its defeat in the four-realm war, the Heavenly Dao's Origin Space sealed itself and entombed its will. The stabilization of the Human Dao and Earthly Dao subsequently relieved pressure on its law structure and enabled its Supreme-realm capacity to recover. It is willing to endanger living beings and destabilize the Great Desolation to remove opponents, including using Mysterious Demon Realms, forcing Saints into obedience, and planning to shatter the world when direct control becomes impossible. 354 522 531

Despite its arrogance, it becomes cautious or conciliatory when facing the Great Dao, Merit of World Creation, or the Pangu True Body. It yielded to Houtu's demand to alter the Heavenly Race into the Heavenly Human Race rather than risk Great Dao intervention. 443 610

The Heavenly Dao orders Hongjun to seize the Sanqing's Companion Treasures before their birth. Hongjun plans to send the Chaos Bell to the Sun Star, place the Taiji Diagram at Daoist Yin Yang's opportunity site, and retain the Pangu Banner. Heavenly Dao Power allows him to bypass the protective Innate Great Formation, but the Merit of World Creation protecting Yuqing and Shangqing defeats his attempt. Hongjun escapes severely injured, and his subsequent attempt to contact the Heavenly Dao receives no response. 4

Awakening and conflict with the Earthly Dao

The Heavenly Dao awakens to find its authority diminished by the Underworld, the rise of Hunyuan Celestial Venerables, and the actions of the Three Pure Ones and Twelve Ancestral Witches. It responds by releasing Hongjun, using him and Luohu as agents, and attempting to establish additional Heavenly Dao Saints. 278 389 409

Immediately after awakening, its anger causes destructive weather and seasonal disorder throughout the Great Desolation. The resulting deaths generate karmic flames that burn its Dao Body and weaken its authority, forcing it to end the disasters. Seeking forces loyal to itself, the Heavenly Dao supports Haotian and Yaochi's creation of the Heavenly Race. Houtu and the Hunyuan Celestial Venerable Alliance intervene, compelling it to accept the race's reformation into the Heavenly Human Race, subject to Earthly Dao Reincarnation. 442 443 444

Later, it uses Tianlu's body to create forty-eight Heavenly Race members, each at the peak of Grand Unity Golden Immortal. The act provokes hostility from the Great Desolation and results in a major loss of its authority. 543 545

Personal defeat and restriction

The Heavenly Dao personally intervenes to stop Nuwa's creation of the Human Race and the awakening of the Human Dao. The Sanqing and Twelve Ancestral Witches summon the Pangu True Body, which shatters its rules, takes control of the Jade of Creation, and splits its Dao Body with one axe strike. 577 580

Afterward, the Great Dao's will descends upon its origin space. Terrified, the Heavenly Dao acknowledges its unauthorized alteration of the Great Dao's ordained fate. Its injuries and backlash leave it unable to act personally, forcing it to rely on Saints and agents. 610

After the Great Desolation grows stronger, the Heavenly Dao resumes plotting from its origin space. Four-realm war and entombment

Following its breakthrough, the Heavenly Dao turns the Great Desolation, Earth Immortal Realm, Mountain and Sea Realm, and Eternal Night Realm into interconnected battlefields. It uses tribulation seeds and the harvesting of causal power to pressure the forces of the Sanqing and Twelve Ancestral Witches while probing the limits of the Pangu True Body. 761 763 765

Through Hongjun's Three Corpses, it proposes an alliance with Luohu: Luohu will pin down the defenders' main bodies with external attacks, while the Heavenly Dao intensifies tribulations across the four realms to divide their incarnations' attention. Luohu accepts for his own purposes, intending to exploit the alliance before turning against the Heavenly Dao. 767

When the demonic tide begins to fail, the Heavenly Dao's will strengthens seven Heavenly Dao Saints and sends them against the Primordial Wilderness allied army. As the battle worsens, it orders several Saints and their Three Corpses to self-destruct, creating a devastating storm of laws. 782 794

In a final attempt to continue fighting, it fuses its remaining Origin into the law structures of Hongjun and Luohu, creating a temporary Supreme-realm incarnation. Reawakening during the Great Desolation World's ascension

The stabilization and advancement of the Human Dao and Earthly Dao restore the Heavenly Dao's ability to operate at its Supreme-realm capacity. During the Great Desolation World's ascension, the Origin Space receives a major replenishment of law energy, and the Heavenly Dao's will awakens into active operation once more. 811 812 842

It coordinates with Luohu's formation outside the Great Desolation World's barrier, forming a pincer attack from within and without. While Luohu's Concentric Circle Array applies external pressure, the Heavenly Dao alters internal law structures to impede the operation of the defensive law domains. 842

It further adjusts the resonance of its laws to connect the Great Desolation's Calamity Qi with Luohu's dark-golden Demonic Path ripples, reinforcing the combined pressure on the defensive line. 857 858

As the defenders reveal the heightened cultivation of the phantom Pangu True Body and Daoist Taichu, the Heavenly Dao observes that the Great Dao has prohibited the summoning of the true Pangu True Body because it would exceed the ascension trial's upper limit. 859

Buddhist-Demonic Tribulation

With Luohu withdrawn to his newly created Demon Realm and its previous agents swept away, the Heavenly Dao fears eventual suppression by the victorious alliance. It recognizes that the Journey to the West Calamity has failed completely, since Taiqing has accepted Sun Wukong as a disciple and Wukong has reached the Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal realm. The Witch Race's suppression of Calamity Qi also obstructs a new internal disaster. 891

It instead exploits the nearly completed merger of the Mountain and Sea Realm with the Great Desolation. Resentment, killing intent, and demonic energy left by successive calamities become the raw material for a new being, combined with the Buddhist Law remnants of Mituo and Bodhi. The Heavenly Dao guides the entity's formation, infuses its remaining laws, and raises it to the Limitless Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal of the Origin level. 891

New Three Realms and renewed recovery

As the Great Desolation approaches stability, Wutian remains blocked at Two Realms Mountain, Luohu's Seven Emotions and Six Desires incarnation has been destroyed, and the remaining Chaos Beasts are nearing extinction. The Heavenly Dao concludes that its intended vast tribulation will fail once the Sanqing and Twelve Ancestral Witches return, and turns to the creation of a rival structure in Chaos. 921

Hongjun and Jidu are again present as its envoys. They negotiate with Luohu outside the New Demon Realm and propose two additional Universe Worlds. The Heavenly Dao's recovery prompts the Sanqing and Twelve Ancestral Witches to revive their long-standing plan to erase its consciousness. They previously postponed the operation because removing a consciousness so deeply bound to the world would destabilize the law network beyond their ability to repair. After the world's elevation, they believe their combined strength, supported by the reincarnated Chaos Demon Gods, can stabilize the world throughout the operation. 922

Taiqing argues that the recovering consciousness itself threatens the world's foundations through its continued influence on the law network. The allied leaders agree that the removal must be planned carefully to avoid unforeseen damage. By the later Chaos battles, the Sanqing and Twelve Ancestral Witches are engaged in an ongoing struggle with the Heavenly Dao, while their allied formations and elders fight Hongjun, Jidu, Luohu, and the Chaos Beasts elsewhere.
