Background / History

Tony Stark was initially an arrogant weapons developer who treated weapons as toys and remained unaware of the harm caused by Stark Industries’ sales. His kidnapping in Afghanistan forced him to confront the consequences of his work; under captivity and the threat of death, he created the Mark I and escaped with Dr. Ethan’s help. 143 145

After being rescued from the desert by Chen Mo, Tony recognized Chen Mo as his godfather. He publicly shut down Stark Industries’ weapons manufacturing division and began building the Mark II in his underground laboratory. 147 148

Tony’s conflict with Obadiah Stane exposed Stane’s role in the Afghanistan attack and Stark Industries’ illicit arms dealings. Chen Mo saved Tony by providing a third-generation Arc Reactor, but allowed him to confront Stane himself.
