Background
The Human Way developed from the Shamanic Way. In humanity's early wilderness era, shamans protected the nascent human race; the later Human Way diverged so completely from its origin that the two paths split the human race and became hostile Dao lineages 219 265.
Its methods were already being adopted by states outside its direct rule. The Great Deer Kingdom retained Shamanic foundations while using Human Way-style prefectures, counties, bureaucracies, and sovereign-centered administration to gather the power of the masses 5.
Chang'an became the Human Way's center across “all worlds and infinite outer realms,” housing the Human Emperor and the Imperial Academy 247. The path expanded through war, administration, trade, industrial production, education, and the spread of its Dao lineage 572 802.
During the Human-Shaman War, the Human Way sought to secure the Sun and Moon Path in pursuit of “Man replacing Heaven,” bringing it into direct conflict with Wushen Mountain 595. Its forces fought across millions of worlds at once, using war fortresses that consumed material from destroyed worlds to manufacture magic treasures 600.
The Human-Shaman War eventually ended with the Human Way absorbing Buddhism's legacy and unifying Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism 970. Later, the Human Emperor's fall exposed the Human Way to simultaneous invasion by shamans, true dragons, Heavenly Gods, and demonic fiends 1040.
Doctrine
Man replacing Heaven
The Human Way's ultimate objective is “Man replacing Heaven”: replacing Nature as the fundamental essence of reality, so that “Man” becomes the ultimate basis by which the world is interpreted and defined 933 943.
The Human Way considers Nature—the Shamanic Way's ultimate essence—to be an objective foundation that humanity must overcome rather than submit to 933. Its ideal is a universe mastered by independent, thinking beings rather than governed by natural instinct, genes, or external Heaven 778.
Definition of “human”
For the Human Way, “human” is not strictly a biological category. A being qualifies as human by overcoming instinct, acting through independent thought, and taking responsibility for transforming the world 778 1040.
- Instinct-driven behavior, greed, fear, laziness, and uncontrolled desire are classified as animality, not human nature 811.
- Human nature is understood as social: the sum of a person's social relations, education, material conditions, and historical environment 811.
- The Human Way considers even beings such as Li Qi to be “human” if they possess independent thought, despite following another Dao path 778.
- Those unable or unwilling to transcend biological instinct are regarded as plants, animals, or resources rather than humans 802 1040.
Clear principle and rule
The Human Way identifies itself with clear principle: mastering objective laws and using that knowledge to transform nature, rather than attributing events to Heaven or fate 295.
Its society is governed through law and ritual. Law suppresses arrogance, while ritual counters timidity; both are treated as practical mechanisms for shaping human behavior 295.
The Human Way judges warfare, executions, prisoners, and civilians through institutional rules rather than personal preference. From its perspective, killing or saving people solely according to an individual's likes and dislikes is a form of terror 780.
Human society
The Human Way presents officials and rulers as divisions of labor rather than separate social classes. Rank and office reflect capability and responsibility, while all humans remain parts of one collective whole 527 802.
- Its ideal is expressed as “everyone for me, I for everyone,” with no fundamental separation between the individual and the whole 527.
- Officials can draw upon the power of the masses and hold a dual identity as both individuals and components of humanity 527.
- In Chang'an, labor compensation and controlled prices eliminate surplus profit, hoarding, and financial crises; material security allows people to pursue work they genuinely enjoy 251.
- The Imperial Academy teaches the core logic of the Human Way without reservation, treating that knowledge as the foundation upon which the entire system rests 316.
Institutions and Methods
| Institution / Method | Function |
|---|---|
| Human Emperor | Central leader of the Human Way. The office bears immense responsibility and a limited lifespan; emperors may sacrifice themselves for the path's long-term objective 933 1040. |
| Chang'an | Political and cultural center of the Human Way, as well as the location of the Imperial Academy 247. |
| Imperial Academy | Educates cultivators in Human Way policy, classics, military strategy, and its understanding of the universe through Dao charms 305 316 317. |
| Official positions | Offices function as divisions of labor and channels for collective human power, rather than merely hereditary authority 527 802. |
| Nexus of All Realms | A Human Way mechanism used alongside official institutions and allied lineages to organize large-scale resources and power 933. |
| Schools of the Human Way | Specialized traditions, including Confucianism, Legalism, the School of Miscellaneous, the School of Names, and the Yin-Yang School, divide governance, technical research, and policy responsibilities 933. |
| Artificial human plan | A School of Miscellaneous project implemented amid mounting wartime losses, intended to preserve and cultivate non-human beings with the potential to become “human” 933. |
Abilities & Resources
Collective fate and official authority
Human Way officials can draw strength from the masses through their offices. At higher levels, the path unites the hearts of many and manipulates worldly fate 3 527.
- A Human Way force can use collective observation and power to immobilize an opponent 1042.
- Fifth-rank Human Way cultivators can bind the universe with their own rules 692.
- The Human Emperor Sword can channel the Heavenly Policy General's authority through a qualified bearer, though forcibly borrowing that power is fatal within seconds 1042.
Education and social transformation
The Human Way spreads itself by cultivating “human intelligence”: education, infrastructure, labor organization, and the pursuit of the Dao 802.
- It constructs schools, roads, and infrastructure to transform societies rather than relying only on military occupation 802.
- Qiu Zhi's strategy in Baiyue was to avoid direct warfare where possible, expecting Human Way methods to win converts through fair competition and social development 802.
- Its officials believe that a person who becomes self-reliant and consciously transforms the world will naturally choose the Human Way 927.
Military industry and war fortresses
The Human Way possesses extensive reserves of sorceries, supernatural abilities, and magic treasures gathered from countless Outer Domain worlds 579.
- Its magic-treasure assembly lines can refine a sixth-rank magic treasure in seconds 578.
- War fortresses consume matter from destroyed worlds to produce further magic treasures 600.
- Its armies are disciplined and willing to carry out suicidal charges when necessary to expose an enemy's methods or secure an advantage 608.
- Human Way soldiers can be prepared to resist karmic curses through fate-hardening measures 629.
Treatment of non-human life
The Human Way treats non-human beings and ecosystems as resources outside its moral category of humanity 292.
- It may preserve rare species because their evolved properties can be valuable as medicine, raw materials, or other resources 578.
- From the Shamanic perspective, this produces institutionalized slaughter: worlds are dismantled as if on an assembly line, while individual participants regard themselves as merely doing their jobs 780.
- This difference in moral classification is a central cause of the Human Way's irreconcilable conflict with the Shamanic Way 832 940.
Relationships
- Shamanic Way — Origin lineage and ideological opposite. The Human Way evolved from shamanism but rejects Nature as the ultimate essence, leading to repeated conflict and the Human-Shaman War 219 595 940.
- Tang Kingdom — Principal Human Way polity, with Chang'an as its central city and the Human Emperor as its ruler 247.
- Reason Way — Partially allied. One Reason Way faction joined the Human Way through the Nexus of All Realms, seeing “Man replacing Heaven” as a possible answer to the problem of ultimate explanation 455 943.
- Daoist Sect — The Manifest World Faction supports the Human Way as a stepping stone toward “Free and Unfettered” existence, while the Hidden World Faction refuses full alignment 943.
- Martial Way — Some martial artists support the Human Way because conquering Heaven offers the greatest possible target for their Dao 943.
- Buddhism — The Human Way ultimately absorbed Buddhism's legacy after the Human-Shaman War and unified Buddhism with Confucianism and Daoism 970.
- Demonic Path — According to Guanyin Bodhisattva's account, the Human Way and Demonic Path arranged Li Qi's creation and used the Sun and Moon Path conflict to trigger the Human-Shaman War while pursuing their own interests 964 996.
- Li Qi — Initially studied the Human Way in Chang'an and learned from its systems, but rejected its project of transcending Nature. The Heavenly Demon later claimed Li Qi had been created by the Human Way and Demonic Path as a distraction for the Shamanic Way 273 778 964.
Major Arcs
Study in Chang'an
Li Qi entered Chang'an to observe the Human Way firsthand, finding that its society was more than the tyranny he had previously encountered. He studied its economic system, labor structures, institutions, and methods of communication at the Imperial Academy 247 251 273.
Human-Shaman War
The Human Way's attempt to secure the Sun and Moon Path escalated into war with Wushen Mountain. It fought through mass mobilization, war fortresses, disciplined armies, and an uncompromising commitment to “Man replacing Heaven” 595 600 629.
Baiyue transformation
Rather than relying entirely on conquest, Qiu Zhi attempted to transform Baiyue through Human Way schools, roads, infrastructure, and ideology. He believed that social development itself would turn Baiyue into Human Way territory 802.
Imperial crisis
The Human Emperor's fall triggered invasion from multiple hostile powers. Despite catastrophic casualties, famine, plague, and social collapse, much of the Human Way's population remained loyal and retained its sense of collective identity 1040 1044.
Defense of the Human Emperor's remains
Guo Zhitai defended the Human Emperor's corpse despite its limited practical value, arguing that surrendering it would destroy the Human Way's morale and righteousness. He chose certain death rather than allow the symbol of humanity's authority to be abandoned without resistance 1042.
