He cultivated alone in Qingshan Nature Reserve rather than relying on experimental surgery, implants, or equipment from the Psionic Research Institute. He regarded such shortcuts as self-deception that would ultimately damage a martial artist's future 18.

He first met Li Changqing while training with a boulder in the reserve. After recognizing Li's condensed Qi and Blood, Sun Sheng gave him practical instruction, assigned him a 500-kilogram stone, and led him on a mountain run.
