Background / History

Sun Sheng was Jixing Martial Hall's Lower-Rank Chief and Liu Changfeng's disciple. He cultivated alone in Qingshan Nature Reserve rather than relying on experimental surgery, implants, or equipment from the Psionic Research Institute. He regarded such shortcuts as self-deception that would ultimately damage a martial artist's future 18.

He first met Li Changqing while training with a boulder in the reserve. After recognizing Li's condensed Qi and Blood, Sun Sheng gave him practical instruction, assigned him a 500-kilogram stone, and led him on a mountain run. Though Li eventually surpassed him after a breakthrough, Sun Sheng's own nearly one-ton load and effortless endurance established the vast initial gap between them 18 19.

Sun Sheng entered the Youth Cup as Jixing Martial Hall's leading disciple. After losing an earlier spar to Li Changqing, he returned to Jixing headquarters, focused on mental power, and comprehended the basis of Artistic Conception through the Great Havoc in Heaven Scroll. He returned for the finals as a Mid-Rank Martial Artist, determined to reclaim victory 34 35 46.

He lost the Youth Cup final to Li despite using his full Artistic Conception and two secret techniques. Rather than abandoning their rivalry, he continued to train, joined Li in the Bashu Provincial competition, and remained one of Rong City's core fighters 51 52 59.

Appearance

Sun Sheng is a robust, physically imposing martial artist whose body reflects extreme physical training. Following later psionic-energy enhancement, his appearance becomes markedly more refined and harmonious.

  • Bare-chested during his mountain training; his pale, rosy skin is described as tougher than rhinoceros hide 18.
  • Has an indifferent expression and an unapproachable aura that discourages strangers from approaching him 33 59.
  • Wears a white training uniform at Jixing Martial Hall 33 46.
  • His body and facial features become noticeably more “perfect” after the Seedling Plan's second phase 116.
  • Can expand into a giant form through Heavenly Law and Earthly Form 165 206.

Personality

Sun Sheng is intensely proud, direct, and devoted to combat. He believes martial arts must be earned honestly through struggle, and he refuses implants or experimental enhancement even when they could improve his immediate strength 18.

His arrogance is rooted in conviction rather than empty boasting. He initially treats Li Changqing as a promising junior worth teaching rather than an equal opponent, freely credits Jixing Martial Hall's superior resources for part of his strength, and acknowledges defeat when beaten 19 33 35.

He is also persistent and protective. Each defeat motivates him to improve, while in crises he assumes responsibility as a vanguard and pushes himself beyond safe limits to protect civilians and fellow Martial Artists 46 106.

Abilities & Skills

Xing Yi Quan

Sun Sheng's primary martial art is Jixing Martial Hall's Xing Yi Quan, which he uses with explosive, aggressive force.

  • Cannon Fist — Delivers an explosive strike by visualizing a gunpowder detonation through Qi and Blood 34.
  • Machine Gun Fist — Releases rapid successive punches propelled by erupting Qi and Blood 34.
  • Cloud Burst Fist — Creates a spherical shockwave through the explosive release of Dantian Qi and Blood 34.
  • Missile Fist — Launches force across a distance through Ten-Step Divine Fist principles 34.
  • His fighting style is associated with a fearless, battle-driven monkey-like momentum 35.

Externalized Blood Essence

Sun Sheng can project and shape his Blood Essence beyond his body.

  • Covers his palm in Qi and Blood to cleave a boulder cleanly with a hand blade 18.
  • Uses Drawing a Knife to Cut Water to split a stream with a strike 19.
  • Maintains a nearly one-ton stone during mountain-running training without visibly tiring 19.

Momentum and Artistic Conception

Before becoming Mid-Rank, Sun Sheng used Momentum, a Jixing Martial Hall technique that simplifies the conditions for wielding part of an Artistic Conception.

  • Increases his speed, strength, agility, and reflexes by at least fifty percent over his normal state 35.
  • Has a severe Qi-and-Blood and stamina cost, preventing sustained use 35.
  • His completed Artistic Conception is Great Havoc in Heaven, based on a staff-wielding Golden Monkey defying Heaven 46 106.
  • Can use his Artistic Conception to enhance staff techniques and fighting intent 51 52.

Mental Power

After comprehending mental power, Sun Sheng becomes capable of Mid-Rank techniques.

  • Projects a tangible spiritual impact through his gaze, defeating Qiao Yi without physical contact 48.
  • Uses mental power to suppress bodily limits during the flood crisis, forcing his body to continue fighting at great personal risk 106.
  • Reaches Mid-Rank Three-Star through early psionic-energy adaptation 92.

Heavenly Law and Earthly Form

Sun Sheng develops a Supernatural Ability Prototype through the second phase of the Seedling Plan.

  • Enlarges his body into a giant by drawing surrounding forces of heaven and earth into himself 165.
  • Can manifest at roughly one hundred meters tall in space 206.
  • Uses the giant form to intercept a warship immediately after its Space Jump and direct Qi into its antimatter engine, destroying it from within 206.
  • His special ability makes him one of the few Mid-Rank Martial Artists capable of fighting in space 206.

Heaven-Man Resonance

Sun Sheng successfully comprehends Heaven-Man Resonance under Li Changqing's guidance.

  • Receives a significant increase in strength upon achieving it 165.
  • Is told that his Mid-Rank Six-Star-level mental power is sufficient to condense a Yin God if he chooses the more arduous Qi Practitioner path 165.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Staff — His preferred weapon in the Youth Cup final; reaches his eyebrows in height and is used with Great Havoc in Heaven 51 52.
  • Great Havoc in Heaven Scroll — An Artistic Conception Scroll painted by his master, Liu Changfeng, from an ancient gods-and-demons novel 106.

Relationships

  • Li Changqing — Rival, training partner, and eventual ally. Sun Sheng first mentors Li in Qingshan Nature Reserve, repeatedly challenges him, loses the Youth Cup final to him, and later continues striving to keep pace with him 18 34 52 132.
  • Liu Changfeng — Master at Jixing Martial Hall. Liu encourages Sun Sheng to return to Rong City and decisively win the Youth Cup after his earlier defeat 46.
  • Bai Tianci — Fellow Bashu competitor and occasional ally. Sun Sheng recognizes Bai's overwhelming pressure but joins him and other Martial Artists in defending Xichuan during the flood 60 106.
  • Cao Feng — Fellow Bashu and Rong City teammate; fights alongside Sun Sheng during the flood and trains with him under Li Changqing's guidance 106 165.
  • Yang Zhiming — Fellow Bashu and Rong City teammate; joins Sun Sheng in the flood defense and later cultivates Heaven-Man Resonance alongside him 106 165.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Qingshan Nature Reserve Training

Sun Sheng's meeting with Li Changqing establishes him as Li's first major benchmark. He teaches Li practical cultivation principles, trains alongside him, and demonstrates the difference in their strength through Drawing a Knife to Cut Water 18 19.

Youth Cup Rivalry

As Jixing Martial Hall's chief Lower-Rank disciple, Sun Sheng gives Li pointers before the preliminaries, spars with him at Jiangxin Park, and exposes the advantage Jixing's resources provide through Momentum and Artistic Conception 33 35. He returns as a Mid-Rank competitor for the final but is defeated after Li gains the upper hand through unity with heaven and earth and Pure Yang Sword Art 48 51 52.

Bashu Provincial Competition

Sun Sheng joins Li Changqing, Huang Xuan, and Kang Tianchen on the trip to Xichuan. He remains a principal member of Rong City's team, advances through a psionic-energy project, and later obtains a Supernatural Ability Prototype 59 92 116.

Xichuan Flood Defense

Sun Sheng leads the Martial Artists confronting the flood peak, stands at the apex of their formation, and draws on Great Havoc in Heaven to unify their determination. He pushes beyond his physical limits to buy time for civilians before Li Changqing shatters the flood peak 106 107.

Later Cultivation

Sun Sheng accepts Li Changqing's instruction in Heaven-Man Resonance and expresses his willingness to take the difficult Qi Practitioner path rather than avoid the challenge 165. He later achieves Earthly Immortal status and reunites with Li Changqing after a century-long separation 274 290.
