Background / History

Zhang Daoling first encounters Li Changqing in an unknown past era after instantly killing a Mountain God that had accepted a child sacrifice. Introducing himself as Zhang Daoling, he invites Li to join him in sweeping away the deities ruling the world 214.

At this point, Zhang is a youthful Heavenly Immortal who has not yet founded the Five Pecks of Rice Sect or become known as Celestial Master Zhang. He intends to travel from the westernmost Nine Provinces across the land, destroy temples and mountains, and end the deities’ control of humanity and the Dragon Veins 215.

After Li Changqing kills the Tongtian River’s River God, Zhang suppresses the rampaging river, appoints a Dragon King, and establishes conditions for its divine office. He then reveals his larger aim: spread cultivation methods across Jiuzhou so that ordinary people may gain power rather than remain dependent on deities and rulers 217.

Zhang learned at Yuxu Palace on Kunlun as a disciple of Primordial Heavenly Venerate. He recognizes advanced methods such as the Great Celestial Immortal Art despite claiming not to know their origins directly 237.

In the altered historical record, Zhang Daoling dies and survives only through scattered remnants of his True Spirit, historical projections, and the legend tied to the Investiture of the Gods. His plan relies on someone completing that legend and rescuing him from the River of Time 257 258.
