Background
Moke came from an impoverished island near Marine Branch 315. When Xia Che first met him, Moke was skinny, hungry, and among a group of villagers with little means to survive. Xia Che asked his name, established the Moke Pirates around him, and made him its captain; their original crew sailed on a damaged ship before gradually acquiring a larger vessel, more members, and greater influence. 61
Xia Che later described Moke as having lost his parents young, lacking a home, education, and money. Moke himself believed that his father had remained on their island and died of starvation. 40 176
Although Moke became a pirate captain, he consistently regarded Xia Che as his boss and followed his directions even when they required him to act as a dangerous public enemy. He initially avoided causing trouble for Marine Branch 16 out of concern for Xia Che, despite the Moke Pirates’ reputation. 3 16
Appearance
Moke is a burly, bald giant standing nearly three meters tall. His deliberately imposing presentation is central to his East Blue Overlord persona. 3 18
- Usually bare-chested beneath a golden cape or lion-maned cloak. 80 130
- Uses a stiff, arms-crossed “East Blue Overlord” pose to intimidate opponents. 18 42
- Has worn a custom King’s Cloak, emblazoned banners, and later Vegapunk-made golden armor. 18 80 387
- His imposing look often contrasts sharply with his confusion, fear, or childish behavior in private. 136 186
Personality
Moke is intensely loyal to Xia Che. He accepts missions with little hesitation, believing that being entrusted with a difficult task proves that his boss values him. Even when sent to attract the World Government’s attention, he followed the plan and continued his voyage. 159 175 383
He is also simple-minded, impulsive, and highly susceptible to misunderstanding situations. He believed Smoker’s arrival might be friendly assistance, forgot a mission to hold back a Shichibukai while relaxing at Red Romance, and accidentally reveals information despite claiming to be the sea’s most tight-lipped man. 20 50 83
Despite this, Moke can become serious when negotiating status or money. He demanded that Doflamingo explain his proposal rather than accept an empty offer, and he recognized the value of a Devil Fruit well enough to conceal one from nearby pirates. 113 175
Moke genuinely enjoys adventure, but he prefers returning to the East Blue and relaxing at Red Romance whenever possible. Xia Che successfully motivated his Haki training by promising him future shares in Red Romance’s expansion. 137 159 175
Abilities & Skills
Iron Body
Moke has notable aptitude for the Six Powers technique Iron Body, which was one reason Xia Che originally considered him capable of handling East Blue-level threats. 85
- Can use Iron Body better than most of Branch 16’s trainees. 85
- His talent is specifically concentrated in Iron Body; he was not regarded as a naturally complete Six Powers instructor. 85
Transparency Fruit
Moke consumed the Transparency Fruit before his New World voyage. 139
- Can turn himself, his crew, and their ship invisible to evade danger while traveling. 175
- Used concealment to rush through the first half of the Grand Line and enter the New World with few incidents. 175
Haki Training and Evasion
Xia Che subjected Moke to willpower and Haki training, using Armament Haki to strike him and Conqueror’s Haki to temper his endurance. 159
- Zephyr and Mihawk later trained him with the goal of awakening Observation Haki. 186
- He displayed surprising agility by dodging Mihawk’s sword attacks and fleeing rather than taking the blows. 186
- His growth remained incomplete; Mihawk judged him inadequate for the strength expected of a 1.5-billion-Belly pirate. 187
- Moke’s public reputation vastly exceeds his demonstrated natural combat ability, a discrepancy later noted in rumors across the seas. 549
Equipment & Technology
- East Blue Overlord Armor — Vegapunk-made armor that regulates temperature, adapts to dangerous environments, and emphasizes Moke’s survival rather than raw attack power. 159 176
- Protected Moke from Ace’s Fire Fist and allowed him to remain standing under Whitebeard’s Conqueror’s Haki. 176
- Withstood Enel’s massive lightning strike and enabled Moke to push through Borsalino’s light attacks. 246 247
- Later upgrades added automatic healing-fluid injections for serious injury or unconsciousness. 247
- A subsequent version projected prepared scripts directly onto Moke’s eyes, allowing him to deliver speeches without reading from his hand. 308
- King’s Cloak / golden cape — Costume pieces used to reinforce his East Blue Overlord image during pirate gatherings and confrontations. 18 80
- Intelligent foot-soaking device — A Vegapunk-designed portable foot-bathing machine with automated massage, heating, medicinal packets, and simulated acupressure. Moke found it inferior to Red Romance but still took it on his travels. 159
- Life Card — Xia Che created one for Moke so allies could track his condition and locate him if necessary. 175
Relationships
- Xia Che — Moke’s boss, founder of the Moke Pirates, mentor, and de facto captain. Moke obeys him without question and frequently seeks his advice. 61 159 176
- Portgas D. Ace — Moke’s half-brother, as revealed by Whitebeard. Their first encounter was hostile, but they later traveled together and defended one another. 176 220 228
- Marshall D. Teach — Adventure companion and sworn brother figure alongside Ace. Moke intended to rescue Teach after his capture and was advised to preserve his public reputation by announcing that intent. 220 228 229
- Crocodile — Joined the Moke Pirates and later served as first mate. Initially dismissive of Moke, he came to respect his resolve and acted to rescue him after Shiki captured him. 383 400
- Bartholomew Kuma — Associate and frequent companion. Kuma initially treated Moke cautiously because of his Overlord act, then worked alongside him on Xia Che’s assignments. 42 80
- Mochi and Cabaji — Former Buggy Pirates members who joined Moke after he reached the New World. They remained loyal despite their weak strength and fear of its dangers. 175 220
- Buggy — A recruitment target whom Moke attempted to force into the East Blue pirate revival. Buggy repeatedly tried to evade him. 88 89
- Vegapunk — Developer of Moke’s armor, navigation technology, and foot-soaking equipment. 159 175
- Whitebeard — Invited Moke to join his crew and called him his son; Moke refused because he intended to become Pirate King himself. 176
- Enel — Holds a grudge against Moke for bringing him to Vegapunk’s laboratory and repeatedly teasing him. 80 246
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rise of the East Blue Overlord
Moke’s bounty rose to 50 million Belly, and he issued a declaration against Marine Branch 16 that shook the East Blue pirate world. Acting under Xia Che’s instructions, he gathered pirate crews by claiming that the Moke Pirates would lead the assault against the Marines. 14 16 19
His posture, cloak, and scripted Overlord persona convinced many pirates that he was a major East Blue threat. The ensuing pirate gathering drew Marine intervention and badly damaged the East Blue pirate scene after Moke’s plan collapsed. 18 20 23
East Blue Pirate Revival
After returning from the Grand Line, Moke established a public class teaching pirates how to increase their bounties. He promoted attacks on nobles and Marine branches in affiliated countries, funded copies of Pirate from Scratch, and inspired a wave of pirate raids. 80 81
He promised to block the Shichibukai to protect the pirates he inspired, though he was absent when the frightened crews needed him most. He also tried to recruit Buggy into restoring “East Blue Pirate Glory.” 83 88
Pirate King Rumors and New World Voyage
Moke’s inflated bounty and association with the D. name led the seas to treat him as the Pirate King’s son. Whitebeard revealed that Ace was his half-brother, while Rayleigh and Shanks publicly considered the possibility. 176 178 180
The World Government later agreed to announce that Moke was not Roger’s son following Red-Haired Shanks’ demand, leaving the truth of his parentage politically contested. 250
Broadcast Against the World Government
Moke declared his dream to the sea, openly defied the World Government, and later broadcast information concerning the world’s impending submersion and Roger’s secrets. The broadcast triggered a worldwide hunt and pushed his bounty to two billion Belly. 220 222 225 228
At Marineford, Moke survived Enel’s lightning attack and later escaped through the sea during the conflict, further reinforcing his legend. 246 250
Celestial Gold Heist and Later Conflicts
On Xia Che’s order, Moke accepted the mission to steal Celestial Gold despite its extreme danger. With Crocodile and Daz Bones, the Moke Pirates successfully plundered nearly two trillion Belly from the North Blue, an achievement described as beyond even the Yonko. 383 387
Golden Lion Shiki later kidnapped Moke in an attempt to make him his heir. Moke refused Shiki’s offer, and the incident drew rescue efforts from both Crocodile and the Whitebeard Pirates. 400 402
Moke subsequently faced the Big Mom Pirates and Douglas Bullet. He maintained his Overlord facade, ordered Crocodile to test Bullet first, and relied on his armor to escape Big Mom’s candy-based restraint. 527
