First Appearance Chapter 15

Background / History

Dumbledore was born in Godric's Hollow in 1881 and attended Hogwarts as a Gryffindor from 1892 to 1899. His childhood was defined by family tragedy: his sister Ariana was abused by Muggle boys after performing magic, while his father Percival was imprisoned for retaliating. The family withdrew to Godric's Hollow to care for Ariana. 235 80

After graduating, Dumbledore met Gellert Grindelwald through Bathilda Bagshot. The two brilliant young wizards shared ambitions to overturn the existing wizarding order and seek the Deathly Hallows, but Ariana's death ended their partnership and pushed Dumbledore away from pursuing political power. 80 244 609

Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945, captured him alive, and imprisoned him in Nurmengard. He later returned to Hogwarts, eventually rising from Transfiguration professor to Headmaster. Although repeatedly nominated to become Minister for Magic, he refused the post and retained considerable influence through the Wizengamot and International Confederation of Wizards. 506 80

He recognized Tom Riddle's cruel, controlling nature during their first meeting at Wool's Orphanage, long before Riddle became Voldemort. Dumbledore subsequently opposed Voldemort across both wizarding wars, protected Muggle-born wizards within Hogwarts, and continued investigating the means behind Voldemort's survival. 648 506 655

Appearance

Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with flowing silver-white hair and a long white beard, vivid blue eyes, and notably long fingers. He often wears elaborate robes, though he also adopts older Muggle-style clothing for investigations. 110 204 245 439

  • His usual robes range from white to dark green, often embroidered with gold, stars, moons, or other ornate patterns. 110 198 439
  • His beard is long enough to catch biscuit crumbs and frequently becomes tangled when he laughs. 118 280
  • Despite his age, he can appear energetic and sharply composed when acting decisively. 81 654

Personality

Dumbledore is warm, humorous, and notably fond of sweets, frequently offering biscuits, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, or other treats during serious conversations. His playful manner—including winking, teasing students, and accepting Loren's rabbit-ear hat—often conceals careful observation and long-term planning. 78 110 224

His experiences with Grindelwald and Ariana made him deeply distrustful of unchecked power. He deliberately avoids political authority, fears becoming corrupted by lofty ideals, and places great value on life, personal choice, and restraint. 80 113 326

As Headmaster, Dumbledore supports students' growth but often guides them through danger rather than removing every obstacle himself. This approach earns both trust and suspicion, particularly from Loren and Harry, who recognize that some of their trials unfold under his supervision. 176 198 578 703
