Background / History
Dementors originated from secret Dark Arts experiments on Azkaban, where a powerful dark wizard had taken many lives. They can reproduce independently when supplied with sufficient emotions and memories. Their population increased significantly after the First Wizarding War, when Azkaban filled with imprisoned Death Eaters and Dark wizards 289 327.
The British Ministry employs Dementors to guard prisoners. Loren explains that this arrangement is intended to reduce conflict between Dementors and humans and prevent them from causing disturbances in Muggle society. Pickley Gravis challenges its supposed humanity, arguing that abolishing direct executions while handing prisoners over to Dementors for torture is not necessarily progress 332 741.
Dementors can communicate with wizards, but their employment does not eliminate their hunger-driven behavior. Lupin attributes their intrusion at the Hogwarts Quidditch Pitch to hunger and the excitement of the crowd 284 334.
Appearance
Dementors appear as floating, corpse-like figures beneath tattered black cloaks, accompanied by an unnatural chill 289.
- Hands: Gaunt and skeletal, with pale, damp skin and signs of decay 289.
- Face: A twisted, shrunken face covered by rotten, scabbed skin, with scarcely recognizable features beneath the hood 325.
- Odor: Dampness and decomposing flesh 325.
- Sounds: Wheezing or rattling inhalations; these draw air inward rather than serving a biological need to breathe 287 325.
- Magical appearance: Loren's Magic Sight perceives a sinister, oppressive gray-black mass 152.
Although Loren initially describes Dementors as having tangible bodies, later research characterizes them as bodiless soul-based beings. Professor Bashat's instruction likewise classifies them as Wraiths without tangible bodies 325 683 710.
Abilities & Skills
Emotional and Memory Feeding
Dementors draw emotions and memories from living people through their distinctive magic. Happy emotions are specifically identified as food, while absorbed memories and emotions can nourish their growth 284 289 325.
- Their presence can force victims to relive traumatic experiences; Harry sees his parents' murder again when confronted by a Dementor-shaped Boggart 287.
- Feeding does not necessarily translate into immediately usable power. Loren observes that absorbed emotions, memories, and even souls cannot be promptly wielded as magic 305.
- Sufficient emotional and memory nourishment allows real Dementors to reproduce 289.
Dementor's Kiss
The Dementor's Kiss drains a victim's emotions and memories, then takes the remaining soul, leaving an empty shell 325.
- The suction is carried by the Dementor's evil magical power rather than ordinary inhalation alone 325.
- A Patronus barrier can prevent that power from reaching a nearby person 325.
- Absorbing a soul does not give the Dementor immediate control over the soul's power 305.
Cold, Mist, and Movement
Dementors lower the surrounding temperature and produce mist when gathered in groups 710.
- Their chill can penetrate deeply enough to overwhelm a susceptible victim 287.
- They float and can flee at remarkable speed; the cruise-ship Dementor immediately retreats when Loren's Orca Patronus appears 152.
- Fire-based spells can lessen the bodily effects of their cold, while powerful illumination can address the mist. Neither measure is presented as a guaranteed way to repel them 710.
Resistance and Patronus Vulnerability
Conventional physical attacks cannot kill Dementors, and most magic is difficult to use effectively against them. The Patronus Charm is the principal demonstrated countermeasure 152 710.
- Patronus light can repel, restrain, or isolate a Dementor 152 325.
- Loren's exceptionally powerful Orca Patronus traps the cruise-ship Dementor and continuously scorches it with positive emotions until its visible form disappears 152.
- The encounter leaves a pebble-like remnant rather than establishing that the Dementor has been permanently destroyed 152 153.
Soul Stones
Soul Stones are remnants containing a Dementor's distinctive magic. They absorb emotions and memories and can potentially develop into new Dementors 153 289.
| Property / Specimen | Details |
|---|---|
| Appearance | The cruise-ship remnant initially resembles a smooth gray-white pebble; later Soul Stones are described as smooth, jet-black stones 152 289. |
| Growth | The first stone grows larger during Loren's nightmare, leading him to recognize its dependence on negative emotions 153. |
| First specimen | Obtained aboard the cruise ship and later refined into Bloody Mary's mirror surface, expanding the mirror's illusion capabilities 152 289. |
| Second specimen | Obtained when Loren's Patronus devours a patrolling Dementor that enters his Hogwarts Express carriage at the beginning of Third Year 689. |
| Soul absorption | The second stone grows after absorbing Wormtail's soul 689. |
| Boggart experiment | Direct attempts to combine a Soul Stone with a Boggart produce no reaction. After Loren seals them together inside the Boggart's box, the stone bears crude scratches depicting a whale with spread side fins 689. |
Connection to Boggarts
Boggarts normally imitate appearances without reproducing the subject's actual magical abilities. Dementors are an exception: a Dementor-shaped Boggart generates authentic Dementor magic, though it is weaker than a real Dementor 287 289.
Documented Research
| Chapter | Finding |
|---|---|
| 287 289 | Harry collapses before a Dementor-shaped Boggart. Loren and Flamel confirm that the imitation reproduces Dementor magic; tests involving Acromantulas, Basilisks, Mandrakes, and Sphinxes do not produce comparable results. |
| 289 | Flamel suggests that fear and emotion may connect the two creatures. Whether a transformed Boggart can grow or reproduce as a Dementor remains unanswered because the Fantasy Book cannot simulate the experiment. |
| 325 326 | Loren feeds a false happy memory to a Dementor-shaped Boggart and enters its consciousness. Dumbledore identifies an unknown connection linking that Boggart to Loren. |
| 333 | Loren controls the imitation's body through supplied memories. He experiences its cold and hunger and discovers that it digests memories much more slowly than a real Dementor. |
| 334 | As Harry's silver stag approaches, the imitation returns to Boggart form. Its Dementor magic disappears, and the Patronus light loses its effect on the restored Boggart. |
| 683 | Flamel proposes that Boggarts are bodies without souls, while Dementors are empty soul-based beings without bodies. He considers whether both could be unfinished creations from ancient attempts to manufacture life. |
The proposed shared origin remains a hypothesis, not a confirmed explanation. Dementor and Boggart research nevertheless gives Loren clues about the relationship between emotions, souls, bodies, and the essence of magic 683 759.
Story Role / Major Arcs
