Background
Jericho is an American wizard from the Blench family, described as a sporting family. His father, James Branch, is Director of the Magical Sports and Games Department of the Magical Congress of the United States of America. Jericho persuaded his father to visit Britain ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, helping create an opportunity for cooperation between his family and Moriarty. 31 81
He came to Britain specifically because Moriarty was at Hogwarts, later admitting that he would not otherwise have enrolled there. At school, he quickly became one of Moriarty’s closest Slytherin companions, studying, flying, competing, and fighting alongside him. 144 328
Early in his first year, Jericho tampered with Keith’s broom after becoming desperate to fly freely. The incident nearly caused a fatal accident; after Moriarty confronted him, Jericho publicly confessed, apologized to Keith and Percy, accepted detention, and lost House points. 31 32
Appearance
Jericho is a short-blond-haired American wizard who later grows taller, leaner, and more tanned while living in Texas. 85 81 593
- Often adopts a conspicuous cowboy style, including a leather jacket, wide-brimmed felt hat, revolver, and spurred boots. 593
- Wore a bright red leather jacket and white hiking boots while traveling in Japan. 285
- Uses custom Quidditch equipment, including a silver-and-green broom engraved with “MS” and bearing Moriarty’s portrait. 563
Personality
Jericho is energetic, competitive, theatrical, and strongly drawn to attention. He enjoys performing before a crowd, calling himself the “Swift Kid,” but distinguishes admiration from being treated like a spectacle. 195 His confidence can become arrogance, particularly when he believes his athletic ability or combat skill makes him indispensable. 142 312 338
He is also quick-witted and observant. Jericho recognized Moriarty and Lilith despite their altered identities by tracing travel records, sensed Habane Hotaka’s suspicious nature by instinct, and deliberately pretended to fall into Habane’s trap in order to gather information. 285 337 365
Although impulsive, he can acknowledge fault after being confronted. His apology over Keith’s broom incident and his humiliation after losing to Duwayne force him to reflect on his conduct and limits. 32 312
Jericho’s central motivation is his loyalty to Moriarty. He wants to travel the world with him, repeatedly seeks opportunities to prove himself at Moriarty’s side, and ultimately commits himself to defeating the Immortality Organization. 107 142 718
Abilities & Skills
Quidditch
Jericho is an elite flyer and Slytherin’s Chaser. He was selected for the house team alongside Moriarty after demonstrating his flying ability, and he combines competitive Quidditch techniques with combat movement. 25 26 289
- Uses the Sloth Hugging Tree Roll, a world-class evasive maneuver originally intended to dodge Bludgers. 25 180
- Uses rapid weaving and afterimages to deceive goalkeepers and evade opponents. 180
- Applies Quidditch footwork to ground combat, making his casting angles and movements difficult to predict. 289 359
- Introduced aerial broom combat to a knightly duel against Sir Lancelot, wielding a sword and wand while conducting hit-and-run attacks. 563
- Destroyed Ilvermorny’s bottom-lane defense tower during the Magic Canyon match. 383
Arresto Momentum / Air Sealing
Jericho’s signature magic manipulates and seals air. He can remove or confine air in a chosen space, using pressure differences to propel targets or reinforce attacks. 289 290
- Used the spell to drive a large Shikigami into other summoned creatures, pinning them together. 289
- Can seal air ahead of himself, a more advanced application than his earlier use against vampires. 290
- Amplified Lionheart’s Lake Sword strike against the Creator God by drawing away air beneath the blade and compressing the surrounding atmosphere into massive sword energy. 762
- Developed Air Cannon, which gathers compressed air into cannonball-like projectiles. 661
- Kuno was aware of Arresto Momentum as Jericho’s expected finishing move, forcing Jericho to develop alternative tactics in their duel. 359
Spellcasting and Dueling
Jericho is proficient in both conventional spells and unconventional combat combinations. Even before entering Japan’s Mahoutokoro, he was considered capable of defeating some Hogwarts fourth-years. 289
- Demonstrated silent casting; Moriarty suspected he could use limited wandless magic tied to a Blench family spell. 31
- Disarmed Soldaya without a wand. 85
- Defeated numerous Shikigami and older Mahoutokoro students with Expelliarmus, Incendio, Sectumsempra, Incarcerous, and Arresto Momentum. 289
- Fought Kuno’s Crimson Magic with Water Magic, conjured stone defenses, used Accio Maxima, and executed a silent triple cast with Sectumsempra. 359
- Used Protego and Daze to resist and incapacitate Kuno when Habane Hotaka attempted Legilimency through him. 365
- Can cast Dragon’s Breath, though Duwayne’s shadow devoured the black snake it produced. 312
- Used a powerful Finishing Spell to dispel active spells and return magical creatures to Marcus’s pouch. 328
Potions and Alchemy
Jericho showed early promise in Potions by imitating Moriarty’s brewing style. Snape later rated him A/S, recognizing his exceptional talent while criticizing his tendency to rely on Moriarty. 23 333
- Participates in magical-technology assembly and alchemical projects, though he finds advanced construction difficult. 659
- Invented the Flying Horse, a four-legged flying-broom prototype combining a swift horse, alchemy, and Muggle aerospace technology. 593
Tactical Leadership
Jericho can take command in dangerous situations, especially when working with peers he trusts. 746 751
- Led William, Leon, Soldaya, the Weasley twins, Cedric, Draco, and Lionheart during the Vatican infiltration. 751
- Equipped his team with enchanted bulletproof vests featuring stealth mode and instructed them to use additional protective spells. 751
- Directed the team’s response to Gamp’s Vatican monster, encouraging coordinated aerial bombing with magical grenades. 752
- Led William, Leon, Soldaya, and Lionheart in an attack on the Creator God. 758 762
