Background / History

Mary Geoise is the political, economic, and cultural center of the World Government, situated atop the Red Line. Its connections to every sea and access to premier goods make it exceptionally wealthy; wealthy nobles from affiliated nations commonly settle there in pursuit of status and proximity to the Celestial Dragons. 145

The Holy Land is home not only to Celestial Dragons, but also to wealthy nobles from many countries. Its luxury economy is supported by vast spending and exploitative businesses; Sabaody’s high-end commerce and illegal slave trade are described as being backed by Mary Geoise nobles. 145

Although the World Government enacted legislation more than two centuries earlier prohibiting racial discrimination and recognizing intelligent races as equal, Fish-Man Island continued to face discrimination despite being an affiliated nation. 131

Marine officers generally avoid Mary Geoise when possible. They view close contact with it as exposing them to abuses they cannot meaningfully oppose while serving the broader system. 80

Mary Geoise Arson Case

Fisher Tiger escaped slavery in Mary Geoise, later returned by climbing the Red Line, and launched a slave-liberation action remembered as the Mary Geoise Arson Case. It freed a large number of slaves of different races, including Gild Tesoro and the Hancock sisters. 172

Shiki and Revolutionary Army Attack

Ortolan orchestrated an operation that used Shiki as the apparent attacker while Fisher Tiger, Rayleigh, and the Revolutionary Army set Mary Geoise ablaze and liberated slaves. 224 226 248 249

• Fisher Tiger attacked noble residences and rescued slaves amid the fires. 249

Marine Invasion and Fall

After escalating conflict with the World Government, Ortolan’s Marine forces invaded Mary Geoise. The assault began with 50,000 troops landing at the New World port. 431 442

• Mary Geoise shut down its bubble elevators and winches, making conventional access from the port impossible. 435
• The Marines breached the first defensive line despite explosions caused by slave collars. 441

Following the conquest, martial law was imposed on Mary Geoise. Nobles and major merchants were arrested, and their properties were confiscated. 452

• Marines seized immense wealth from Celestial Dragon properties; the Heavenly Abode alone was estimated to contain enough assets to fund the Marines for 25 years. 452
• At least ten thousand Marines operated in the Divine Residence after the capture, with further reinforcements continuing to arrive. 452
