Background / History

Sengoku was already one of Marine Headquarters’ foremost leaders while serving as an Admiral. Known as the “Tactician,” he combined top-tier combat ability with exceptional cultural knowledge and strategic judgment; Zephyr considered Ortolan’s talents reminiscent of Sengoku’s own reputation as a master of both scholarship and martial ability. 46

As an Admiral, Sengoku worked alongside longtime comrade Garp and Chief Staff Officer Tsuru. He took charge of threats involving Shiki, raised the Roger Pirates’ threat assessment after their pursuit of Poneglyphs became clear, and pressed for reports to the higher-ups concerning the Void Century and Ancient Weapons. 21 46

He became increasingly concerned by the MADS research team after learning of its Lineage Factor and clone-growth technologies. Viewing their work as potentially more dangerous than the Ancient Weapons, he resolved to dismantle MADS and bring Dr. Vegapunk under Marine control. 56

Sengoku later became Ortolan’s superior, adviser, and political protector. He entrusted Ortolan with sensitive assignments, accepted his unconventional prisoner-labor plan for G-5, and repeatedly supported or concealed Ortolan’s dealings when they served broader Marine interests. 72 150 176
