Background / History

Rosinante is the adopted son of Fleet Admiral Sengoku and the biological younger brother of Donquixote Doflamingo. Unlike Doflamingo, he built his Marine career without publicly relying on Sengoku’s influence; few Marines knew of their father-son relationship. He trained under Zephyr and was regarded as polite, gentle, kind-hearted, and deeply committed to justice 87 107.

After completing Zephyr’s academic program, Rosinante refused the customary promotion to Rear Admiral because he believed his failed practical training made him unworthy of it. He instead requested a transfer from the Propaganda Department to the Intelligence Department, intending to monitor the increasingly influential Donquixote Family more closely 107.

While embedded with Doflamingo’s organization, Rosinante repeatedly reported its activities to Sengoku. His reports included Doflamingo’s hijacking of the Celestial Gold, alleged ties between Ortolan and G-5, and the family’s Platinum Lead trade with the Big Mom and Beasts Pirates. Unaware that Sengoku and Ortolan already knew of—or were involved with—many of these operations, Rosinante interpreted the evidence as proof of serious corruption and possible defection 176 223 288.

When he overheard Doflamingo arranging the Op-Op Fruit transaction on Minion Island, Rosinante took Trafalgar Law and Lami there in an attempt to save them from Lead-Platinum Disease. He located Diez Barrels, destroyed the church sheltering him, shot him, and seized the fruit. Rosinante then had Law eat the Op-Op Fruit before Doflamingo could obtain it 292 298 300.

Ortolan located Rosinante through Observation Haki and confronted him alongside Doflamingo. Rosinante admitted that he had obtained classified information from Sengoku, knowingly disrupted a Marine mission ordered by the Five Elders, and given the mission’s target to Law 300. Sengoku subsequently ordered his arrest and the escort of Rosinante, Law, and Doflamingo to Marine Headquarters 302.

At Headquarters, Rosinante pleaded for Law’s protection, declaring that he regarded the boy as his own son. Sengoku ultimately accepted responsibility for Rosinante’s actions and arranged to protect Law, while Rosinante received a life sentence in Impel Down 305 306.

He is compassionate to the point of defying authority. His determination to save Law and Lami led him to compromise a high-level Marine mission, despite understanding the consequences. He remains convinced that protecting vulnerable people is central to Marine justice 300 305.

Rosinante can also be naive and overly direct in his investigations. He repeatedly suspected Ortolan and Doflamingo of betrayal without realizing that Marine leadership had classified knowledge he lacked 176 288.
