Background

Records concerning the Devil Fruit Tree identify Joy Boy as its first test subject. He originally consumed an ordinary Rubber Fruit, then honed its power beyond conventional limits and completely fused his own power with it. This fusion created the Nika Fruit, a Devil Fruit with both Paramecia and Zoan characteristics. 49 620

Eight hundred years before the present events, Joy Boy led a rebellion centered on freedom. Lily later states that she, Cassius, and eighteen others formed an alliance specifically to eliminate him. Joy Boy’s attempt failed in part because he lacked allies and support, leaving him isolated against the coalition. 542 543

However, eight centuries of failure and repeated defeats by Gigue erode his original ideals.
