His accumulated Conqueror’s Haki is retained and is described as stronger than Roger’s during Roger’s time as a Nika Fruit user. The highest-grade First Embrace also grants eternal youth and protection against fatal injuries. |
| Tremor-Tremor Fruit user | 599 | Confirmed to have recently become an Ability User. He combines tremor power with swordsmanship and Haki, producing powerful airstrikes and localized spatial fractures. The acquisition itself is not shown in the supplied passages. |
Background / History
Garling belongs to the Figarland Family, whose descendants have held command of the Divine Knights for generations through exceptional combat talent. His elder brother, Gurando, repeatedly lost to him in competitions and deeply resented losing the commander’s position 12.
Garling killed his father, an act that left him with lasting guilt. Gurando later exploited that guilt to discourage him from interfering with experiments on Gigue. During their final confrontation, Gurando revealed that their father had intended to seize Gurando’s body through the Blood-Blood Fruit, while Gurando had initially planned to seize Garling’s body before choosing Gigue instead 154 341.
Garling had a secret relationship with a maid, who became Shanks’ mother. Celestial Dragon rules required the execution of a non-Celestial Dragon mother and the exile of her child; she killed herself shortly after giving birth. Garling could not bring himself to enforce those rules and planned to publicly acknowledge Shanks at the coming hunting competition. Nevertheless, he continued to favor Gigue as the family’s future head, citing both his talent and purer bloodline 341.
News of Gigue’s apparent death disrupted those plans. Suspecting foul play, Garling barred Gurando from participating in the hunt and intended to obtain the Dark-Dark Fruit while bringing Shanks into the family. The God Valley battle ended the competition, and the disappearance of the prize boxes—including the box containing Shanks—separated him from his son 342.
Appearance
Garling initially appears as a middle-aged man whose facial features closely resemble Gigue’s, giving him the appearance of an older version of his nephew 46.
- Crescent-shaped hair and beard: His hair and beard connect into a distinctive crescent 46.
- Naturally imposing presence: His ordinary demeanor can intimidate people even when he deliberately restrains himself 572.
- Black robe: Wears one when confronting the Five Elders over Gigue’s Marine activities 70.
- Rejuvenated appearance: His hair turns white with age before Gigue restores his darker hair, firm skin, and appearance in his thirties 261.
- Diamond-shaped forehead mark: Associated with the First Embrace’s life-preserving effect 600.
Personality
Garling is stern, proud, and intensely conscious of Figarland honor. He insists that the family resolve its own internal crises and refuses outside intervention in Gigue’s battle with Gurando. His aristocratic outlook is explicit: he dismisses Ohara’s destruction as deserved and silences commoners who criticize Gigue 150 231.
His warmth is highly selective. Around Gigue, he jokes, smiles, and tolerates familiarity that contrasts sharply with his treatment of guards and other Celestial Dragons. He actively protects his nephew’s reputation and political independence, even against the Five Elders 51 70 82 104.
Guilt complicates his otherwise forceful personality. Gurando’s accusations about their father can shake his composure, while his failure to raise Shanks leaves him calling himself an incompetent father. During their reunion duel, he deliberately accepts a serious wound rather than repel his son’s assault 154 573 600.
Sossia brings out his most openly affectionate side. He lets her pull his beard, attempts to soothe her despite his inexperience with childcare, and checks her carefully after an incident involving flying cup shards 573 597.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship — King’s Sword
Garling masters the Figarland Family’s inherited King’s Sword, a style that works together with Conqueror’s Haki and helps develop its control 59.
| Form | Function and documented use |
|---|---|
| Imperial Extreme | Concentrates Conqueror’s Haki’s mental deterrence into a sword-shaped shockwave. Even Logia elementalization cannot evade it. Garling uses it to break Gigue’s seven-sword formation 59. |
| Nation Suppressing | Releases destructive sword energy infused with Haki. It shatters Warcury’s four tusks and later clashes with Fury’s combined Haki-and-explosion attack 81 528. |
| God Slaying | The style’s final killing technique. Garling eliminates Damu D. Fury with it, but the immense Haki expenditure leaves him pale and breathing unevenly 528. |
- A simple horizontal slash, without Armament Haki emission, sends Gigue back several meters despite Muramasa absorbing much of the impact 59.
- His technique emphasizes changing attack angles, exploiting openings, and targeting vulnerable points 597 598.
- He has mastered God Slaying, but states that its true power requires cooperation with the Dark-Dark Fruit 59.
- During his duel with Shanks, neither initially suffers bodily injury despite their clothes receiving numerous sword cuts 598.
Conqueror’s Haki
Garling possesses top-tier Conqueror’s Haki capable of exerting physical pressure and causing tangible damage, rather than merely frightening opponents 46.
- Forces golden-armored guards to their knees and suppresses both Gigue and Lucia 46.
- Uses controlled pressure to silence a council of Celestial Dragons 55.
- Incapacitates Warcury’s men during their confrontation 80.
- Channels Haki through his swordsmanship and later combines it with Tremor-Tremor waves 59 599.
- His accumulated Haki remains formidable after rejuvenation; Gigue remarks that it has become much stronger 261.
Observation Haki
Garling’s Observation Haki supports both unusually acute perception and rapid combat reactions 46 59.
- Hears Gigue speaking before he reaches the royal chamber entrance 46.
- Reacts to Gigue becoming solid after Kamui and immediately redirects Muramasa’s thrust 59.
- Foresees Fury’s approach, dodges, and counters with a slash deep enough to expose bone 528.
Armament Haki and Physical Combat
Garling combines strong bodily defense with fast movement and close-range attacks 80 528 598.
- Emerges unharmed from Fury’s explosive assault after defending with Haki 528.
- Uses kicks to knock away Warcury and punish Shanks when his son becomes distracted 80 598.
- Retains some Haki protection when deliberately accepting Shanks’ strike, although the resulting wound remains severe 600.
Tremor-Tremor Fruit
Garling later gains the Tremor-Tremor Fruit and applies its destructive power with the precision of a swordsman 599.
- Airstrike: Blasts Shanks hundreds of meters away with one attack 599.
- Localized spatial fractures: Shatters the space before him, subjecting Shanks to tearing forces and energy turbulence 599.
- Sword coating: Wraps his blade in visible tremor waves alongside Conqueror’s Haki 599.
- Selective use: Initially withholds his fruit ability during the duel to assess Shanks’ swordsmanship 598.
Geppo
- Ascends roughly a hundred meters in a single step while intercepting the Clan of D above Mary Geoise 528.
First Embrace
Gigue gives Garling the highest-grade First Embrace, providing rejuvenation and a safeguard against otherwise fatal damage 261 600.
- Maintains eternal youth 600.
- Consumes accumulated Blood Qi Power to preserve his life after a fatal injury 600.
- Gigue replenishes the forehead mark with a drop of his blood after Garling is wounded by Shanks 600.
Judicial and Command Authority
Garling’s position grants him authority to judge Celestial Dragons, making him a feared enforcer within Mary Geoise 44 54.
- Oversees Doflamingo’s hearing and transfers the final decision to Gigue 55.
- Commands the Divine Knights to evacuate spectators during Gigue and Gurando’s battle 150.
- Can mobilize the Divine Knights against threats to Celestial Dragon rule 527.
- Describes himself as Mary Geoise’s last line of defense and refuses to leave merely to help hunt Whitebeard 105.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Gurando — Elder brother and bitter rival. Garling challenges his experiments on Gigue but remains emotionally affected by the prospect of killing him 12 44 149.
