History
As the Sect of Interception’s head disciple, Duobao expected to inherit Tongtian’s mantle. Tongtian’s praise of Ling Xiao as a potential sect master made him see his junior brother as a rival. Duobao worked behind the scenes to remove Ling Xiao and, when Ling Xiao left, demanded that he surrender the Shangqing Dao Arts 1 2.
Duobao subsequently handled sect affairs on Tongtian’s behalf. He led disciples toward Phoenix Perch Mountain during the Demon Court crisis, later fought Ling Xiao in the Netherworld, and suffered severe injuries in that defeat 112 162 181 182. During the Investiture of the Gods War, he commanded the Ten Thousand Immortals Sword Formation. Ran Deng’s seizure of his Twenty-Four Sea Pacifying Pearls weakened him; Xuandu and Lu Ya then suppressed him, and Xuandu captured him in the Exquisite Pagoda of Heaven and Earth 552 560.
After the sect’s defeat, Duobao chose the Western Sect rather than attempt to rebuild the Sect of Interception. He swore a Heavenly Dao Oath severing his ties with Tongtian, became a disciple of Jieyin and Zhunti, and transformed into Shakyamuni Buddha 570 571 572. He later advised surviving former fellow disciples to establish a Supreme Pure Sword Sect without invoking Tongtian or the Sect of Interception 741.
Appearance
Duobao is described wearing a Daoist robe before his conversion. Under Zhunti’s guidance, his appearance changes to that of a Buddha 70 572.

- Lotus platform beneath his feet 572.
- Rounded flesh protrusions replacing his formerly bound hair 572.
Personality
Duobao’s ambition for leadership shapes his early rivalry with Ling Xiao. He conceals resentment behind a composed manner, yet also takes responsibility for fellow disciples: he manages sect affairs, tries to protect Bi Xiao from further mistreatment, and gives Kong Xuan his accompanying Golden Bowl when Kong Xuan needs a vessel for his self corpse 1 70 112 471.
He repeatedly rejects suggestions that he join the Western Sect and publicly swears loyalty to Tongtian. Following his capture, however, he acknowledges his affinity for the Buddhist Dao and chooses the Western Sect’s offer. His decision devastates Tongtian, and Duobao later shows guilt when they meet again 332 528 571 637.
