Background / History

Nezha is an ancient Immortal God and a third-generation disciple of the Chan Sect. He survived the shattering of the Thirty-three Heavens, attained the Grand Luo Dao Fruit and Grand Luo Golden Mansion, and became a Body Refinement Saint through his Lotus Body. He is sworn brothers with Yang Jian and counts Sun Wukong as a friend. 330 332 333

At the South Heaven Gate, Nezha intercepts Su Changqing and the eighteen Thunder Dukes in an attempt to recruit Su as his vanguard for an expedition against the Six Desires Demon Realm. When the Thunder Dukes reject his claim, Nezha admits he will settle the matter by force. 330 331

His ensuing battle with Su Changqing damages the South Heaven Gate and ends without either fighter decisively defeating the other. Nezha acknowledges Su's strength, offers him a position under the gate, and later treats him as a brother. 332 333 334 335

Nezha joins the campaign against the Six Desires Demon Realm alongside the Thunder Department and Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li. He assists Su in the Qingyun Realm, mocks the Barefoot Heavenly Venerate, and helps expose the latter's hiding place after the battle. 364 371

When Great Emperor Ziwei moves to restart the Investiture of the Gods, Li Jing attempts to send Nezha to the Buddha Realm for safety. Nezha refuses to abandon Su Changqing and the Thunder Department, choosing to face the danger with his companions. 474

During the conflict with Yin Shi King, Nezha is badly injured and his Fire-Tipped Spear is broken. The Four Heavenly Kings intervene with a fragment of the Investiture of the Gods, and Su Changqing subsequently saves Nezha by severely wounding Yin Shi King. 478

His bravado is tempered by a strong sense of loyalty. He refuses his father's escape plan because Su Changqing and the Thunder Department are his friends, remains defiant before Yin Shi King despite being badly wounded, and offers to accompany Su into danger. 474 478 482

He is also unusually informal around those he accepts. Nezha continues calling Su Changqing by name even after Su becomes the Nine Realms' First Divine General, and he quickly comes to respect Ji Xingyue after learning she is the Taiyin Star Lord. 356 542
