Background / History

Yuanshi was among the Three Pure Ones who preached the Xuanmen Dao at Kunlun after Hongjun merged with the Dao. He chose disciples from the cultivators who passed the grand formation, accepting figures such as Guangchengzi, Yuding, Taiyi, Manjusri, and others into his lineage. He also offered to accept Cihang as a disciple due to a deduced karmic master-disciple connection. 2

Cihang refused, claiming insufficient aptitude to inherit Yuanshi's Jade Purity Dao. Yuanshi interpreted the rejection as an affront to his dignity and expelled Cihang with a sleeve strike; Cihang was seriously injured despite using the Glazed Pure Vase and Willow Branch to defend himself. Taiqing ended the matter, advising that Cihang's karmic connection to Chaos Demon Gods made his exclusion preferable. 2

After becoming a Saint, Yuanshi repeatedly clashed with Cihang as the latter's cultivation and influence rose. Their conflict began over Randeng, escalated through struggles over the Human Race, the South Continent, and Mount Luojia, and eventually became part of the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. 131 156 421

Yuanshi briefly reached an accommodation with Cihang when he confronted him over the Good Corpse's preaching in Tiannan. Impressed by Cihang's determination to pursue the Dao despite the risks, Yuanshi agreed not to obstruct him, but restricted the Lotus Flower Mountain lineage to the Tiannan region. 190 191

Personality

Yuanshi is proud, authoritative, and highly conscious of status. He initially viewed Cihang as an insignificant cultivator and took the refusal of discipleship as a personal insult. His treatment of Cihang later became entangled with frustration and jealousy as Cihang repeatedly advanced beyond expectations and entered the Primordial Chaos Path. 2 436

He is pragmatic when facing defeat or changing circumstances. Although reluctant to cooperate with the West, he accepted Taiqing's argument that the Heavenly Dao Saints needed allies against Cihang, Houtu, and Zhenyuanzi. He also surrendered the Wuji Apricot Yellow Flag to conclude his karmic dispute with Cihang rather than prolong a losing confrontation. 435 436 481

Yuanshi places sect prestige, Heavenly Dao authority, and long-term strategic advantage above personal bonds. This conviction ultimately deepened his rift with Tongtian: Yuanshi regarded their competition during the Investiture of the Gods as justified even as Tongtian saw it as a betrayal of their brotherhood. 454 485
