Background / History

Vivi was born into the pure-blood Grindelwald family but showed no magic during childhood, leaving her treated as a Squib. Her cousins bullied and humiliated her, while her younger brother Gellert encouraged her with the belief that she would someday become a “swan.” Her aunt, also a Squib, showed her unusual tolerance and support. 123 392

During Christmas 1888 in Vienna, Harry intervened when Vivi’s cousins targeted her and saved her princess diadem. The encounter became deeply important to her; she later revealed that Harry’s arrival on a broom felt like the arrival of her hero. It was also her reason for choosing Hogwarts over Durmstrang. 123 139 392

Vivi eventually awakened as an Ancient Magic inheritor and attended Hogwarts as a Slytherin. After Harry disappeared through time, she entered a time seal in the Slytherin study. A portrait containing a copy of her memories remained in the Map Chamber for over a century, awaiting Harry’s return and gathering news of the outside world from visitors such as Lily Evans. 96 129 139

Harry recovered the materials needed to release her from the time seal. Vivi returned physically weakened, with her formerly golden hair eroded to silver-white and her magic severely depleted. Mr. LeMay determined that prolonged physical contact with Harry—whose body had absorbed the Philosopher’s Stone—could restore her magical power. 139 140 141

After returning to modern society, Vivi resumed her studies, developed an interest in Muggle politics and history, and rapidly entered government service. She later rose to lead the Austrian and European magical administrations, eventually becoming President of the International Confederation of Wizards. 140 161 410 513 585

Appearance

Vivi is a striking witch whose appearance visibly reflects the condition of her magic and the cost of temporal imprisonment. Her natural hair is golden, though it turned silver-white after her release from the time seal and may regain gold tones as her magic is replenished. 139 141 305

  • Golden or silver-white, slightly curly hair, depending on her magical condition 139 141 305
  • Violet eyes 280 482
  • Exceptionally slender waist and an elegant, aristocratic bearing 203 307
  • Often wears formal clothing with Austrian or Austro-Hungarian elements, including a silver-white princess diadem 275
  • Uses gold-rimmed glasses while working in her Ministry role 244

Personality

Vivi is intelligent, composed, and exceptionally resilient. The isolation of the Map Chamber did not break her; she views her century of waiting as worthwhile because it led to Harry’s return. She habitually presents strength rather than vulnerability, believing Harry needs someone reliable rather than someone who adds to his burdens. 96 129 139

She is practical and ambitious, combining political instinct with a willingness to confront threats directly. Vivi wants wizards to live openly rather than remain constrained by secrecy, while still recognizing the dangers that magical exposure and irresponsible power can create. 165 454

Her care for Harry is sincere but frequently possessive. She becomes jealous of Cassandra and other girls around him, sometimes acting forcefully when she feels threatened. Even so, she can set rivalry aside when someone’s welfare is at stake, as she does with Cassandra when Pabbie needs help. 160 194 232

Vivi is also sharply humorous and enjoys teasing those close to her. Her confidence can appear intimidating, especially in duels, political negotiations, and situations involving Gellert’s mistakes or her stolen fortune. 122 144 165

Abilities & Skills

Ancient Magic

Vivi is an Ancient Magic inheritor with the ability to sense, manipulate, and interact with ancient magical systems.

  • Opens Ancient Magic seals and responds to concealed passages, including Node Seven’s fourth-level Stone Gate 638
  • Uses silver-white Ancient Magic as both protection and offense 636 643
  • Can synchronize her consciousness with magical networks and locate Harry through their Philosopher’s Stone connection 643
  • Became an anchor for part of the First Person’s consciousness after absorbing a sphere of light at a ley-line node 633 634
  • Her Ancient Magic can be overwhelmed by dark-red corruption from the Son of the Morning Star’s domain 643

Dueling and Combat Magic

Vivi is an elite duelist known for precise spellcasting, transfiguration, shields, and battlefield awareness.

  • Dueled Albus Dumbledore while still recovering from magical depletion; Dumbledore acknowledged that she might have defeated him without the burden of protecting Harry 144
  • Uses transfiguration offensively, including transforming projectiles into barrels and destroying stone constructs 144
  • Conjures violet fire, including phoenix-shaped flames, and can divide a tidal wave with a wand gesture 144
  • Creates enhanced Shield Charms and a Lightning Shield capable of neutralizing lightning-based attacks 179
  • Disarmed and incapacitated multiple tunnel intruders through precise silver-white spells and terrain manipulation 616
  • Uses Legilimency in combat and interrogation; one opponent described her as a “monster” after she entered her mind 616

Magical Recovery Through Harry

The time seal left Vivi weak and without reliable magical reserves. Her power can be restored through extended contact with Harry.

  • Harry’s Philosopher’s Stone-derived power replenishes her magic through physical contact 140 141
  • Her hair shifts from silver-white toward gold as her magical strength returns 141 147
  • Early replenishment restores enough power for basic spellcasting and dueling against ordinary Dark wizards, but not her full combat capacity 141
  • Sustained magical exertion can rapidly drain her, as when she and Harry blocked Lucifer’s awakening array 647

Political Strategy and Administration

  • Speaks or studies multiple languages, including Russian, Chinese, and Dutch 140 314
  • Proposed crystal-ball displays and holographic-style magical interfaces inspired by computers 179
  • Challenged Professor Burbage’s Muggle Studies assessment and had her grade raised from “T” to “E” 165
