Background / History

Yuta enrolled at Tokyo Jujutsu High while burdened by the overwhelming cursed energy and violent protection of Rika Orimoto. His arrival frightened Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda, who initially treated him as a dangerous cursed individual; Rika retaliated when she believed they were threatening him. 3

During an elementary-school rescue mission, Yuta was frightened and uncertain how to fight, but his concern for the injured Maki and the trapped children pushed him to ask Rika for help. Rika manifested as a Special Grade cursed spirit and destroyed the enemy, marking Yuta’s first decisive use of her power to protect others. 4 5 6

He trained under Maki’s guidance and alongside Natsu Hiraku, improving from panicked defensive movements into a more agile close-range fighter capable of holding his own in sparring. 10 29 On a later mission with Toge, he remained nervous about real combat and was instructed not to fully manifest Rika because of the danger she posed. 29

During the Kyoto exchange event, Yuta fought Todo Aoi alongside Kirara Hoshi. When Kirara was injured, Yuta rejected his former passivity, released his immense cursed energy under Rika’s influence, and battled Todo directly; the outburst prompted Kyoto’s principal to order his execution before Gojo intervened. 46 47 Todo subsequently recognized Yuta as a rival and noted his unusually rapid grasp of Black Flash. 48

Suguru Geto sought Yuta’s power and specifically intended to obtain Rika. During the Night of a Hundred Demons, Yuta wished to help his friends before resolving Rika’s curse, though he later felt guilt that others had been injured fighting for him. 54 64 66

Afterward, Yuta chose to train abroad with Miguel so that he could become someone who protects others rather than someone who must be protected. 69 He later learned to control Rika’s manifestation completely. 138

Yuta returned to Japan during the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident as a more mature second-year and Special Grade sorcerer. He and Rika eliminated cursed spirits on arrival, reunited with his classmates, and joined the effort against the Culling Game. 230 231 He later volunteered to enter a Culling Game barrier alone and demonstrated his evolved [Imitation] technique in a spar with Natsu. 235 236

Appearance

Yuta is a black-haired young man who initially appears exhausted and downcast, with pronounced dark circles beneath his eyes. After his time abroad, his formerly soft, messy hair is styled more maturely, matching his more composed demeanor. 3 230

  • Black hair. 3
  • Noticeable dark circles during his first days at Jujutsu High. 3
  • Carries a ring associated with Rika. 6
  • Fights with a long sword and later uses a silver-white staff during sparring. 46 236

Personality

Yuta is initially timid, apologetic, and overwhelmed by both curses and the threat Rika poses to people around him. Even while frightened, he shows immediate concern for injured classmates and endangered civilians. 4 5

His defining motivation is protection. He asks Rika for strength to save his companions, chooses overseas training so he can stand on his own, and becomes increasingly willing to confront powerful opponents rather than hide behind others. 6 46 69

Despite gaining confidence and immense strength, Yuta remains humble and considerate. He is uncomfortable with being praised as exceptional, treats younger students gently, and rejects plans he considers ungrateful or unethical even when they might offer tactical advantages. 54 235

  • Rika attacked Maki, Toge, and Panda when she believed they were bullying Yuta. 3
  • Yuta can call on her strength through the ring on his left hand. 6
  • Her full manifestation was initially unstable enough that Gojo warned Yuta not to release her during missions. 29
  • Yuta later gains full control over her manifestation and prevents berserk episodes. 138
  • Rika safeguards a large collection of cursed tools for Yuta and his allies. 230

[Imitation]

Yuta’s evolved Cursed Technique allows him to imitate techniques he has encountered. 236
