Background / History
Wu You is one of three manifestations separated from Big Brother through One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones, alongside Liao Chen and Xie Wuchen. Though distinct in temperament, all three originate from the same root and may eventually merge back into the main body. Wu You embodies emotion, loyalty, and “great love”; Liao Chen embodies detachment, while Xie Wuchen embodies an unruly nature. 218 603
During the Underworld conflict, Wu You and the other two manifestations emerge from Big Brother to confront Earth Store Bodhisattva and Zhong Kui. Empowered by Big Brother's music and the surrounding Lycoris radiata, Wu You continues fighting despite being outmatched. He later agrees to reunite with the other manifestations and Big Brother, reversing the Three Pure Ones transformation. 220 224
Wu You later returns to Northeast China after learning that Wang Fei's father has died. He helps Wang Fei reach her family, buys necessities, cooks, comforts her relatives, and reassures her late father's spirit that Wang Fei will be cared for. 571 572
During his visit home, Wu You reconnects with relatives and old friends, resolves emotional troubles, teaches cultivation principles, and assists people regardless of their beliefs. He ultimately returns south to focus on writing and lecturing. 577 578 603
Personality
Wu You is direct, emotionally sincere, and unusually open about affection. He approaches strangers politely, thanks people readily, and treats bonds of family, friendship, mentorship, and love as interconnected forms of affinity. 573 592 593
Despite cultivating a path described as “no emotion,” Wu You is deeply emotional, loyal, and protective. He does not retain anger for long, but he becomes forceful when someone threatens or mistreats those he considers his people. 575 588 603
He favors acceptance over resistance: rather than becoming entangled in unwanted events, he shifts his thoughts, accepts what comes, and addresses problems directly. Xue Pan describes this mindset as the ultimate expression of intelligence rather than foolishness. 243
